The name itself kind of gives your fanny the flutters, doesn't it? Although, if you haven't heard of Rock, you would be forgiven, as he's one of those mid-20th century celebrities who's been almost entirely forgotten today. But back in the 50s and 60s, he was a major heartthrob and a household name. Rock was one of the lucky Hollywood actors who worked his way up through the studio contract system after World War II – despite having zero acting training and a famous inability to remember lines. He was, however, extremely hot, and many have (rightly) seen that as a talent of its own. A Navy vet, Rock arrived fresh off the bus in Los Angeles around 1946, met some gay guys, got recruited by a scuzzy (also gay) agent, and the rest...was gay history. Extremely closeted history, however. Because while Rock's penchant for peen was no secret to the industry, his studio, agent, and inner circle rigorously managed his heterosexual image to "protect" his lucrative career. This gambit worked, and eventually landed him roles opposite the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Doris Day, and Jimmy Dean. But the question is: how much did Rock himself resent this closet? Despite all the fabulous gay pool parties, great friends, and gorgeous lovers, he was loath to discuss his private life with anyone. A not uncommon approach for actors, but especially in the tight-lipped 50s when one's life "behind closed doors" was supposed to remain out of sight and out of mind, even amongst friends. Long after the studio relinquished Rock from his contract and their publicity machine, and even as public opinion about homosexuality had begun to change, Rock guarded the doors of his closet scrupulously. (Wow, good use of "scrupulously"!!!!) It was only in the depths of his final, tragic illness that he was forced to reveal his sexuality to the world. The extremely public scandal that followed would alter the course of queer history. Josephine Baker: Bisexual Beyoncé of 1920s Paris (feat. Michell Chresfield)

Her career spanned decades and continents, and on THE Continent, she was the highest paid Black entertainer for most of the 1920s and 1930s. As a dancer-singer-actress triple threat, she was in some ways the precursor to megastars like Beyoncé in our own day. Unlike Beyoncé, she built her career not only through her own talent (and Jay-Z's influence), but by taking advantage of one of the most racist, colonialist, imperialist periods in Western history: the aftermath of World War One. Josephine became famous because she created a sensual, wild, "sauvage" style of dance, which the Jazz-frenzied denizens of gay Paree scarfed down like a good soupe à l'oignon. In their 20th century terror of what it meant to be "modern," Josephine represented a return to something raw and wonderfully original. Her nudity, her brazen dancing, her uninhibited artistry were all examples of "true" art – an instinct-driven Fuck You to modern civilisation. They were of course racist bastards for thinking all of this – but they also genuinely loved Josephine. And Josephine loved to use their racist bullshit not only to line her pockets, but to feel their genuine love in return. Like many (gay) performers, she lived to be loved. Throughout her wild and successful career, Josephine presented a completely new vision of what it meant to be a woman, to be Black, and to be an unapologetic diva. And yet, we barely remember Josephine today. BUT THAT STOPS NOW. This is bigoted and historically wrong, because many lesbian women helped invent Fashion. Some of the most notorious lesbian and bisexual women over the last 500 years were known for their bold fashion choices, from King Christina's equestrian menswear to Anne Lister's combinations of lace bonnets and lordly overcoats. (If one is going to extract coal from one's lands, one must always serve cunt.) In the last two centuries, in particular, lesbians got even more experimental. The Sapphic revival in the Victorian Era brought Grecian fabrics to prewar England and France, while the Post-WWI Gender Revolution brought monocles and tailored suits to Berlin, Paris, and Harlem. These advances in sartorial lesbian technology didn't just allow women to experiment with fashion. They allowed lesbians to do what they do best: find one another, fall in love, move in together, break up, and then fall in love with each other's exes. AND THEY LOOKED FIERCE WHILE DOING IT. Fanny & Stella: The Victorian Drag Queens Who Shocked England (feat. Neil McKenna)

Science may never know. But history offers some clues. Could it be because we were monks and priests for so long? Could it be that the simple joy of discovering anal makes you want to shout? Or maybe it's because straight people have been telling us to shut up for thousands of years? Actual gay people have reacted to straight society's shushing in a number of ways. Many retreated into themselves and hid their desires. But a select few refused to silence themselves. Ernest "Stella" Boulton and Frederick "Fanny" Park were two heroines of this kind. While most Victorian British men kept busy colonising the East and procreating with their stiff-lipped wives, Fanny & Stella took to the streets, stage, and sheets to live their loud, gay lives. They wore silk dresses some nights, tight-fitting suits on others; they wore rouge and wigs; they pearl-powdered their bottoms for their gentlemen sex guests, as every lady did, and they kept a bottle of chloroform on the nightstand to get shy punters in the mood (a trick of the working girl's trade). They were STARS, baby! Of Victorian London's "sizzling underbelly," its increasingly visible queer subculture full of rent boys, pimps, "Mary-Anns," drag queens, and boring old gays like you and me. Fanny & Stella were eventually arrested on a Big Night Out, and later tried in the highest court in the land. Their crime? Interestingly, this time it wasn't sodomy or buggery, but a "conspiracy" to commit the "unnatural vices." Such was their fame in Britain at the time that the real threat the authorities saw in these flouncy young fops was their ability to "turn" the rest of society. Our guest this week wrote the book on Fanny & Stella, and as a self-professed 150-year-old queen, has all the Victorian goss we could possibly guzzle. So get ready to come on in! The playboy becomes the player, in other words, though Louis will continue to play him at every turn. And when Philippe's son starts getting passed up for army jobs – things get heated rivalry (but not sexy, just kind of plain rivalry). Everyone always complains that the marble statues of antiquity seem to have surprisingly small penises – was everyone micro back then? What did the size queens do? But the truth is – the ancient world was full of dicks, big and small. There were dicks on houses, at intersections, in art, and of course, in milady's bedside table. AND – dicks were actually sacred to the ancients! From the phallic Herms that warded off evil to Priapus' fertility-granting member, Big Dick Energy was everywhere. Because dicks were a symbol of agricultural power, magical protection, and prosperity. 2,000 years ago, Cock was King. But it wasn’t all rainbows and dildos. In Greece, big dicks were a joke, a sign of an oversexed – and therefore unrestrained – man. Meanwhile, the Romans took things in a more violent direction (surprise). Which is why they turned the Hung Horny Goat Weed, Priapus, son of Dionysus and Aphrodite, into a toxic masculinity fantasy of sexual violence. This fantasy of priapic domination was unique to the Romans in the ancient world – the Greeks preferred to model self-restraint and wisdom, which of course is the unique jurisdiction of the average-size penis. Born Again Queer: A History of Gay Evangelicals (feat. William Stell)

Despite how annoying we all are. In fact, millions and millions of Christians ARE themselves...very gay. So why is it that we automatically associate Christianity with homophobia? The answer lies in the brief, but fascinating history of gay evangelical activism you'll find in this episode. Before the gay rights movement, American Christians weren't more homophobic than anyone else. Homophobia was common in America, but it wasn't yet one of the defining features of American Christianity. But then: a sexy bear of a Pentecostal pastor, Reverend Troy Perry, launched a successful gay church (the MCC) in 1968. And then: a feminist evangelical lesbian wrote a book about how gays were – surprise! – people, too. Things started to change: people's hearts and minds shifted on homosexuality. And that's when the Religious Right first got organised. That's when televangelists and Jerry Falwell and Anita Bryant began to wage a campaign not just against gay evangelical activists, but all gay people. The modern assumption – that all Christians "hate f*gs" (and anyone else they deem queer) – was born. My guest today, Race Bannon, leather community activist and co-host of the On Guard podcast, taught me a few things I never knew about leather that I bet you don't either: 1) Leather is all about play: it seems hyper-masc and dark. But really it's a bunch of beautiful horny people expressing themselves erotically and inventively. In a world where adults are never allowed to play, leather allows all people, queer or not, to explore their true selves. 2) Leather literally saved lives. The leather community was at the vanguard of the AIDS epidemic, providing sex education and support to show gay men in particular how to express desire and intimacy without penetrative/fluid-exchanging sex. 3) Leather is a protest! Leather began because queer men wanted to be seen as masculine - in the 1950s, that was radical. And in the 1980s, The Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco, which is now one of the biggest leather festivals in America, launched as an anti-gentrification demonstration uniting queer communities in the SoMa neighbourhood in San Francisco.
