Highly Sensitive, Happily Married

Hannah Brooks

Are you a highly sensitive woman who gets emotionally overwhelmed or reactive in your marriage — even though you love your partner and want more closeness and connection?

Marriage Coach and HSP Love Expert Hannah Brooks helps highly sensitive women build emotional safety, regulate their nervous systems, and create secure, deeply connected marriages.

Highly sensitive people (HSPs) experience relationships more intensely. This can create beautiful intimacy — but it can also lead to overthinking, resentment, emotional flooding, anxious attachment patterns, and feeling misunderstood by your spouse.

If your marriage feels heavier than you want…
If you take things personally…
If conflict lingers for days…

If you feel stuck between “it shouldn’t be this hard” and “maybe I’m just too sensitive”…

It does not have to stay this way.

On Highly Sensitive, Happily Married, you’ll learn how to regulate your nervous system, understand your emotional patterns, and shift the dynamic of your relationship from the inside out.

Through relatable stories, coaching, and practical tools, you’ll learn how to:

  • stop taking things personally
  • calm emotional reactivity
  • build self-worth and inner security
  • communicate so your partner can actually hear you
  • feel secure, deeply safe, and steady in your marriage
  • create connection that deepens by the day
  • generate the emotional environment that brings out the best in your partner, so they become a more present, loving, and supportive teammate in life with you
  • and invite so much more love and joy into your daily lives together.

This is not about becoming less sensitive.

It’s about learning how to use your sensitivity as your greatest strength in love. Tune in.

And when you’re ready to go beyond insight into lasting change, Foundations of Emotional Well-Being for HSPs is the next step: a structured process to help you build emotional safety, self-trust, and a secure, loving marriage from the ground up.

The Problem With Always Working on Your Marriage

221 You already know that a good marriage takes work. But what if constantly working on your marriage can sometimes get in the way of it being good? For many highly sensitive women, taking their relationship seriously can easily turn into taking every problem, disappointment, unresolved issue, and imperfection seriously—more often than we need to. We think about what needs to change. We revisit the hard conversations. We notice what still isn't fixed. We keep working on it, because of course we want our marriages to be good. But what often happens is that working on your relationship starts to become the main way you experience your relationship. And so you end up missing out on so much that could be enjoyable, loving, and simply good between you.. Making a generally good relationship…not so good… In this episode, you’ll hear about the surprising problem that always working on your marriage leads to—and why another kind of work is just as essential to creating a deeply loving, connected relationship. (Hint: it is MUCH more fun work.) I also share why doing this other kind of work – this all too often forgotten work – has made such a difference in my own marriage, and what many highly sensitive women need to learn in order to stop letting the hardest parts of their relationship take up so much space. And be able to truly feel loved, loving, and deeply connected in marriage. So listen in to this story and metaphor filled episode, and learn the starting point of the incredibly important and usually overlooked work. Because your marriage is about so much more than solving its problems. And sometimes, the work you aren't doing may be exactly what your marriage needs more of. Safety Is Contagious in Relationships

220 One of the most powerful ways to change your marriage begins with understanding how emotions spread in intimate relationships – and learning to use this on purpose to create an upward healing cycle between you and your spouse. Because just as fear, reactivity, and self-protection are contagious in relationships– bouncing back and forth between partners... So is safety. There is a way to tap into this, and doing so intentionally changes everything inside you, and then everything between you and your partner for the better. As you build safety intentionally you become a different kind of presence inside your marriage: someone who communicates to your spouse naturally through your actions and words: “Who you are is safe with me”. This naturally fosters deep safety – which breeds more love, joy, and lightness – between you and your partner. It also (thank goodness!) creates the best conditions for your spouse to grow and do his own work on himself. So in this episode, we'll explore what it really means to become this Safe Heart Partner, and how, when you learn how, you have far more influence over the atmosphere between you—and the kind of relationship you create together—than you've ever realized. Every Marriage Has an Atmosphere

219 What if one of the most powerful forces shaping your marriage is something you've never even thought about? Every relationship has an atmosphere. You can't see it, but you can feel it. It's the difference between walking into a home that feels light, warm, and easy to breathe in... and one where everyone seems to be quietly protecting themselves. The surprising part? The atmosphere is not just the way a relationship is. It's actually something that's being created… And it isn't created by one big conversation, one conflict, or one breakthrough. It's created by one ordinary interactions at a time repeated over and over—most of which you barely notice. In this episode, I'll help you recognize the invisible emotional climate inside your own marriage, why it matters far more than you may realize, and why understanding this one idea could completely change the way you think about creating the relationship your heart has been longing for…...and your ability to influence the relationship. Because once you can see the atmosphere... you can begin changing it. Dive in. What Does Emotional Safety Actually Feel Like in Marriage?

218 What does a truly emotionally safe, loving marriage actually feel like…from the inside? In this episode, I invite you to step into an ordinary day inside what I call a Safe Heart Partnership: a relationship where you feel emotionally safe, deeply connected, genuinely cherished, and at home with one another—even when life isn't perfect. I want you to get a taste of what that really feels like. Why? Because when you can clearly envision—and even begin to feel—the kind of relationship you're longing for, your brain naturally starts orienting toward it, making it easier to recognize opportunities and make choices to bring it alive, and begin actually creating it one ordinary day at a time. So, together, we'll walk through a simple Tuesday...sharing coffee in the morning, navigating a disagreement, responding to a difficult day, repairing after a hurt, and ending the evening side by side. Because the goal isn't a relationship without challenges. It's a relationship where the challenges no longer threaten your connection, and even bring you closer over time. And you feel truly home with each other. As you imagine yourself living these moments, you'll begin experiencing what emotional security within you and emotional safety between you actually feel like, so you can move towards it in your own real life more easily. So if you've been longing for a marriage that feels peaceful, warm, supportive, playful, and deeply good to live inside, this episode will give you a glimpse of what's possible—and will help your heart begin moving toward it. This is the kind of partnership I believe every highly sensitive woman deserves. Listen in. Why You Can't Relax in Your Marriage

217 Ever feel like you can never quite relax in your marriage—even when nothing is really wrong? Maybe a part of you feels like you have to manage the relationship all the time… or you're constantly noticing your partner's mood, his tone, how quickly he texts back, whether he seems distant, or whether the two of you still feel "okay." You aren't trying to overthink your relationship...but somehow, part of your mind is always checking and tracking if things are going a little south. In this episode, I unpack what I call this often hidden job so many highly sensitive women unknowingly take on: monitoring the relationship. We'll explore: How to recognize when paying attention has unconsciously become monitoring. Why this pattern is so common for highly sensitive women. How your nervous system turns sensitivity into vigilance. The surprising cost of constantly tracking your relationship. And what becomes possible when you no longer feel responsible for monitoring love in order to feel safe. If you've ever found yourself wondering "Are we okay?" more often than you'd like, this conversation will help you understand why—and, more importantly, show you a different path. If you're longing for a relationship that feels lighter, safer, more connected, and more like coming home to your best friend, this is an important episode. The Hidden Control Trap: Why Good Women Push Love Away

216 (If you've been enjoying this podcast, and haven't yet left a review, please do so now! Thank you so much.) Sometimes control in relationships doesn’t look like "classic" control. And yet it still takes a real toll on the relationship. So this IS an episode for you whether or not you think you may sometimes be controlling. In it I share a story about a conversation with a friend that led to a big desire to share this with you: Many of us have, without even realizing it, learned to relate to our partners through control, pressure, expectations, and attempts to manage their behavior… And it is hurting our relationships. Because, while it tends to come from a very understandable place, it often creates the exact opposite of what we're hoping for in love. You’ll learn: Why control is often much more subtle than we think The hidden signs that control may be showing up in your relationship How control can look like criticism, people-pleasing, monitoring, fixing, advising, or managing Why trying to get your partner to behave differently rarely creates genuine connection The 2 deeper roots of control Why insight alone isn't enough to change these patterns And the 3 levels where lasting change actually happens If you've ever felt frustrated or disappointed with your partner, or thought: "I just want him to be more loving, attentive, or emotionally available…or… do more," or even, "Why doesn't he get it?”, this episode will help you see those struggles through an entirely new lens. Because when you become a woman who can honor her needs without trying to control another person into meeting them, love stops feeling like a job or power struggle… And starts to feel like love again. The Missing Piece to Transform Your Relationship as an HSP

215 If you’ve put real effort into improving your relationship…Like, tried communication tools, or mindset work, nervous system regulation, self-worth healing, or attachment work—or all of the above—and still find yourself feeling stuck in the same emotional patterns… this episode will likely land deeply. In the previous two episodes, we explored Emotional Agency and how your inner world shapes the way you experience love and connection as an HSP. Today, we go deeper into what actually makes relationship change hold. Because while most relationship advice focuses on what happens between partners, real change starts inside you. And even approaches that focus on healing your inner world are often incomplete—working with only one layer of the system while leaving the others untouched. So the missing piece to transforming your relationship as an HSP isn’t more effort, or better communication, or even more self-work in isolation. It’s understanding that your emotional well-being is a system, and learning to work with the 3 layers of that system in an integrated way. In this episode, we explore: • Why traditional relationship advice often doesn’t create lasting change for HSPs • Why mindset work alone isn’t enough • Why nervous system work alone isn’t enough • Why self-worth and self-compassion work alone isn’t enough • How your nervous system, thoughts, and sense of self-worth constantly interact • Why working with all three is what actually creates lasting emotional and relational change And perhaps most importantly, if you’ve been wondering, "Why does it feel like I've worked so hard and our relationship still isn't where I want it to be?"... This compassionate, clarifying, relieving episode will finally give you the answer. And it will also show you the path forward to create real relationship change that lasts. Why You Still Feel Unloved in Your Relationship as an HSP

214 If you’ve ever felt unloved, unseen, or emotionally unmet in your relationship…even while knowing your partner probably does care about you… this episode is a must listen. In the last episode, we talked about emotional agency and the 3 core layers that shape emotional well-being for highly sensitive people. In this episode, we dive much deeper into one of those layers, which tends to be one of the biggest hidden struggles I see highly sensitive people carry into relationships without even realizing it: The painful self-worth patterns and deeper “heart wound” that sit beneath feeling unloved. This is a conversation that Todd Smith, from the Stress Management for Highly Sensitive People Podcast, and I recorded for his podcast, and I decided to share it here because it’s such a deep, compassionate, validating, and hopeful conversation. In it we explore: why HSPs can feel unloved even when they have a good partner who does really love them The "heart wound", and something I call “care distortion”, and how they affect a marriage how childhood conditioning and being told you’re “too sensitive” impacts self-worth why reassurance from your partner never fully resolves the deeper pain how emotional patterns, thoughts, and the nervous system all work together to help you feel loved or unloved how to begin building a more secure, loving relationship with yourself And how that finally opens the door to you feeling the deep love in your relationship you’ve always wanted to feel I think a lot of you are going to feel deeply seen in this episode. And even more importantly, you will leave feeling hopeful — because these patterns are not permanent, and healing them is not just absolutely possible, but something you can totally excel at as an HSP with the right support. Emotional Agency 101: The Master Skill for HSPs in Relationships

213 If you often feel triggered, hurt by, or really impacted by what’s happening in your relationship, this episode will help you understand why–and what to do to leave this painful pattern behind. We’re talking about Emotional Agency — the master skill that allows highly sensitive people to guide their emotional experience, instead of being run by it. Most highly sensitive people were never taught how to work with their inner world in a way that creates real emotional steadiness. So instead, we end up emotionally delegating— depending on our partner or circumstances to feel safe, loved, worthy, and connected. And that leaves us feeling unstable, reactive, disconnected, and powerless much of the time. In this episode, you’ll learn: • what emotional agency actually is • why most HSPs struggle without it • how emotional delegation shapes your relationships • the 3 essential abilities emotionally healthy HSPs develop • and the 3 foundational inner layers that make emotional steadiness possible: nervous system regulation, thought stewardship, and self-worth I also share the new path I’ve created to support HSPs more deeply and clearly: Foundations of Emotional Well-Being for HSPs → Marriage Sanctuary 1:1 Because emotional well-being and relational well-being are deeply connected. This episode is the beginning of a new series — and one of the most foundational conversations I’ve ever shared on the podcast. The Sensitive Love Revolution (Revisited)

210 High sensitivity is not a weakness in relationships — it’s a powerful advantage. In this foundational episode, you’ll discover why highly sensitive people (HSPs) are uniquely wired for deep emotional intimacy, authentic connection, and meaningful closeness in marriage. (This is a completely remade episode revisiting an old topic) But many sensitive women are told they’re “too much” — too emotional or too intense — when in reality, sensitivity is the very trait that equips you to create extraordinary relationships–and can even help usher in a more caring world. I know it may not feel that way, so this episode is a must listen. Because it will give you the boost you need to not just feel good about your sensitivity, but to transform your relationship into one you feel deeply good about. You’ll discover why high sensitivity is a relational strength, and a powerful gift our world needs more of. We explore how empathy, mirror-neuron attunement, and deep emotional processing uniquely position HSPs to create the deepest connection, meaningful communication, and lasting closeness. You’ll also learn why real change in a marriage doesn’t begin with fixing your partner, but with leading yourself through emotional agency, nervous system regulation, self-trust, and healthy boundaries. This is the heart of the Sensitive Love Revolution: embracing your sensitivity, developing the skills to work with it wisely, and intentionally shaping the emotional environment of your marriage — creating ripple effects that transform your relationship and the world around you. Subtle Defensiveness Spotting

209 (Great to share with your spouse) Why does defensiveness show up so quickly in your marriage—especially when you, as an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) wife, are trying to express hurt or something you're unhappy about? And why does it often sound calm, logical, and completely reasonable — and still feel like it erodes intimacy? In this episode on subtle defensiveness spotting, we break down both the obvious and the harder-to-detect forms of defensiveness in intimate relationships—especially the “reasonable explanation” reflex many husbands fall into without realizing it. You’ll hear specific examples of what defensiveness sounds like, how subtle defensiveness shows up in men in real time, why it happens, and what it feels like for highly sensitive women on the receiving end. If you’re an HSP woman who feels unheard when your husband explains instead of empathizes—or you’re a husband who genuinely wants to show up with more emotional safety, connection, and confidence—this episode will help you recognize the defensiveness cycle that keeps couples stuck and learn how to spot it before it quietly erodes connection. We’ll explore: Classic defensiveness in marriage (denial, minimizing, shutting down) The sneaky forms of subtle defensiveness that sound reasonable but create distance How to spot subtle defensiveness in real time Why men tend towards defensiveness more than women (important to understand for more compassion) How defensiveness quietly erodes emotional intimacy What HSP women need in moments of conflict to feel safe and connected Whether you’re a highly sensitive wife longing for deeper emotional connection or a husband wanting to strengthen your marriage with your HSP partner, this conversation will help you see what’s really happening beneath the surface. Because defensiveness isn’t about not caring—it’s often about caring deeply and not knowing how to stay connected when you feel imperfect. Let’s begin showing that care in ways that truly land. Ever thought, “Why is everything that my partner’s doing bothering me lately?”or “Does this mean something is wrong with us?” If so, I've been there too, and this episode is for you. In it, we explore why feeling irritated in your relationship doesn’t mean anything is wrong, how chronic stress and dysregulation fuel annoyance, and what you can do to shift out of irritability and reactivity and back into connection. In this episode, you’ll hear 5 tips to shift out of irritation, aggravation, or annoyance, as well as: Why annoyance is a normal part of healthy relationships How to stop making irritation mean something is wrong The connection between stress, your nervous system, and relationship tension Simple ways to regulate yourself and soften reactivity How to rebuild warmth and appreciation with your partner This episode is especially for highly sensitive people and anyone who feels overwhelmed, reactive, or disconnected in their relationship. Why “Talking It Out” Often Makes Things Worse (Especially for Sensitive People)

207 If you’ve ever walked away from a conversation with your partner feeling more overwhelmed, more disconnected, or more upset than when you started — this episode is for you. In this conversation, we explore why so many well-intentioned attempts to “talk things through” actually escalate conflict instead of resolving it — especially for highly sensitive people. You’ll learn what’s really happening in your nervous system during moments of emotional intensity, why communication breaks down when safety drops, and the difference between processing an emotion and unintentionally ruminating in it. We’ll also talk about: Why your “survival brain” hijacks conversations when you’re flooded How trying to communicate while dysregulated can create a fight–fight loop Why timing matters more than technique when it comes to hard conversations What it means to regulate first — and communicate second. This episode isn’t about blaming yourself or your partner. It’s about understanding the physiology underneath communication struggles — so you can stop trying to solve emotional problems at the wrong level. If you’re a sensitive person who wants calmer, more honest, more connecting communication — without forcing or over-explaining — this episode will help you see your patterns with more compassion and clarity. Why Traditional Marriage Advice Often Fails Highly Sensitive People

206 If you’ve ever read a marriage book, heard some relationship advice that seemed logical, or sat in a therapy session and thought, "Why is this so much harder for me than it seems to be for everyone else?"—there is a biological reason for that. Today we dive into what that is, and why a lot of traditional marriage advice just doesn't work for us as highly sensitive people. The truth is, most marriage advice does not take into account the HSP reality – our highly sensitive nervous systems and brains. So of course it’s going to flop for us if we are not first respecting and honoring our physiological differences and needs. To expect traditional marriage advice to work for us is like expecting an orchid to bloom in a desert. It’s not going to happen. So tune in to hear the top 5 popular pieces of advice that fail us sensitives, and what actually works instead – all illustrated with HSP-resonant nature analogies (sometimes some good old garden metaphors can really clear things up!) By the end of this episode, you’re going to understand why, to thrive in your relationship, you don’t need to try harder at traditional marriage advice’s top down approach – like communicating with specific phrases– and that nourishing your sensitive system at the root level is what will make the biggest difference–and make the rest come quite naturally. What does that mean? Tune in to find out. The Acceptance Switch: Humanity Over Perfection

205 Why does unhappiness and irritation so often sneak into even the most loving marriages? Usually, it’s through the silent killer of connection: non-acceptance. In this episode, we’re diving deep into the "Acceptance Switch"—that internal shift that moves us from judging our partner’s flaws to making peace with their full, messy, human selves. I share the raw truth about my two marriages: how a lack of acceptance created a cycle of shame and distance in my first, and how consciously choosing to perceive my second husband’s "shortcomings" through the lens of acceptance has unlocked a level of joy and playfulness I never thought possible. We also explore: The Cultural Root of Intolerance: Why society has conditioned us to reject our partners full selves, including moods and behaviors. The "Human Inheritance": Understanding that your partner’s frustrating patterns aren't personal—they are often a genetic and cultural "ball and chain" they didn't choose. The Growth Paradox: Why true growth and change in a relationship only happen after you’ve established a foundation of radical safety through acceptance. Acceptance vs. Tolerance: Why accepting someone’s humanity is the opposite of being a "pushover." To help you kick off the year with a heart-centered reset, I’m walking you through a New Year Acceptance Process. We’ll unpack the "stories" we tell ourselves about our partners and learn how to see through the fog of expectations to find the sweetness that’s been there all along. Stop fighting your partner’s humanness and start reaping the gifts of making peace with who your partner really is. SHOW NOTES: Want personal, structured support for your marriage? Developing Your Sensitivity For A Better Marriage

204 Developing your sensitivity, instead of overcoming it, may be one of the best things you can do for your marriage. We HSPs often think of ourselves as “too sensitive”, but actually, our sensitivity is the very thing that can make our marriages richer and better than any others on earth! I often talk about how ”working with” your sensitivity is quite key to your happiness in love– and your whole life, and it is true there are many ways we can learn to do that to thrive. And, we can also DEVELOP some of what is already there – deepen it, sharpen it, fine tune what we naturally bring that already is an asset for our relationships. Today I want to specifically talk about one easy way you can develop your sensitivity for a richer, more deeply intimate, relationship. You’ll learn what that is, how you are already probably pretty good at it, how to refine this gift, and what gets in the way of it all too often. You’ll also learn about a couple (of many more) other aspects of sensitivity you also want to develop. My hope is you will come away from this episode reminded of the natural gifts you already possess, and some simple easy to implement ideas about how to deepen those gifts for more harmony and a sense of being lovingly in-sync in your marriage. Relationship Compare and Despair

203 "That couple is just so in love…so much more than we are!" "How come we can’t communicate like that?" "What's wrong with our relationship that my husband doesn't look at me like that?" Ever sounded like that in your head? Ever compared your relationship, or your spouse, to other couples or spouses…and then felt even more unhappy about your relationship? Clients ask me about this often. It's so common that there is a term for it: Compare and despair. Today, we are calling it Relationship Compare and Despair, since we will focus in how it affects our love lives. It’s a wired-in thing our brains just do as humans, especially if we aren't totally happy in our relationships. But it hurts and disempowers us, and makes our relationships worse. So how do you stop? In this episode I will tell you, and help you turn this habit into something that, instead of making things harder, can help your marriage get better. You will also learn what is driving the despair that often accompanies comparing, as well as the most important shift to make to put an end to most of the pain or upset you feel in your relationship, so you can effectively shape your relationship into one that feels lighter, more loving, and connected and all the things you want… You can stop letting comparison undermine your love and connection. You can use it instead as an opportunity to make your marriage into the very best one it can be. Listen in to learn how. Soft And Strong; The Magic Combo For Lasting Love

202 Want to make sure you aren't settling for unfair treatment, letting your partner's hurtful behavior fly, passively just “taking” your partners rudeness, or being a doormat? Want to stand up for yourself and proactively make sure you get the BEST treatment from your spouse, not just the scraps? Ever wondered if what I share on this podcast lets your spouse get away with too much? This episode is for YOU!!! You’ll learn how, for the best marriage possible with your spouse, you need to develop both a soft belly, and a strong back. In other words, you need an emotional skillset that allows for true open-heartedness (instead of reactivity and defensiveness) AND you need to take specific strategic "strong" actions that prevent any poor treatment and GET the loving treatment you deserve in your marriage. I generally teach more about the soft belly piece, because you can’t do the strong back piece well without it–and this part does NOT get enough attention in the relationship advice/self-help world… BUT the strong back pieces (i.e. specific actions and strategies) are 100% essential, too, to have a great marriage. So listen in today to hear what those “strong back” strategies are, and how you can learn more about implementing them, and what you must also be able to do in order for them to create a truly loving connected marriage (instead of a roommate or business-partner type relationship of cold functionality). The magic lies in the combination of both a strong back and a soft belly, not one by itself. Come hear exactly what I mean.
