Movie & Book Review: Obsession (2025), Yesteryear, and the Shatter Me Series
After catching up on Salt Lake City divorce drama and the mediocre manosphere that I believe contributed to it, we jump into a review of the psychological "horror" film, Obsession. An instant classic, Obsession tells the story of a cowardly man's choice to put his crush under a spell to love him, rather than muster the courage to express his feelings and accept whatever hers may be. His choice to force his will upon her has devastating consequences for her, for him, and their entire community, but his resolve to have her love him remains. The movie is layered and filled with clues about motivations and messages regarding both the characters and the script. It's a powerful cautionary tale about how quiet, polite, unassuming men can still be dangerous and how narcissism, patriarchy, and fear can warp understanding what love is and isn't. Then, a review of the book Yesteryear, by Caro Claire Burke, another psychological ride. This one takes you into the mind of a "modern day trad wife" as her commitment to being a perfect, content generating, wife and mother plays out. With a fixation on a life mirroring that of the early frontier and wild west, Natalie, strives to project a specific image and aesthetic. Yet, she hides the unsavory truth of her hard forged reality, perhaps to herself most of all. While the main hook is Natalie suddenly waking up in the early 1800's, the book's observations on centering men, the roles women play to enable that illusion, and the high stakes of religious extremism, are also primary topics. We close with my plug for a series of books that I've recently discovered, the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. The series begins by introducing a girl named Juliette as she's trapped in an asylum due to her dangerous supernatural powers. From there, it evolves into a dystopian, la resistance, self acceptance, enemies to lovers arc - with a love triangle. I'll do a more thorough review when I finish all the books! Recap and Rant: RHORI Reunion Part 2 and Reviewing Propaganda Memes
It all started so upbeat, a fun recap of the last reunion to dull the senses in a stressful time, taking a moment to enjoy the last episode of a new Real Housewives franchise. Recap: RHORI S1E12, Finale and Reunion Part 1
A legendary finale and an initial reunion installment for the Bravo ages. Seeing the women deal with so many issues on their Block Island getaway was sensory overload in the best of ways. Alicia being thrilled that Billy took initiative to do anything, JoEllen and her husband confronting Rulla and her lil' cheater about the video, and JoEllen trying to make peace with Rulla. Then, the lil' cheater's arrest at the end of the finale was the cherry on top of a season filled with conflict and strife because of his cowardice and denial. Reunion Part 1 showcased the Real Housewives of Rhode Island in all their blue hued glory. Rulla went back to her attempts to blame JoEllen for her problems and failed miserably, Liz went into scary mode more than once, Kelsey and Rosie rehashed their beef about rumors and cliques, and Alicia continued to be an absolute treasure, a real doll. In the end, only exhaustion and a sense of gratitude remained, both for these women, and for a world where they can loudly air any and all grievances. Rant: Summer House, S10E20 - The Aftermath
Our collective sanity was tested with this follow-up episode that was filmed 20 days after the reunion...then 7 days later...and 7 days after that. First, we witness more manipulative commentary from Amanda and West via conversations with Lindsay and Kyle, respectively. Recap: RHORI S1E11 Stay Clam and Carry On
In the aftermath of the fight between Liz and JoEllen, the group splinters into factions. On one side, JoEllen has been painted as a villain, either for her choice to defend Alicia or for alerting Rulla about her cheating husband. On the other side, we see women who hope for peaceful resolution, and somewhere in the middle, Ashley and Jared are still talking about Audreys. Liz and Alicia heal their rift, but Liz's fight with JoEllen has yet to be resolved. Rulla's Arabian Nights party provides Rosie with the opportunity to tell Rulla about the existence of a video showing her cheating husband doing what he does best, all as Alicia appears to almost faint from stress at her side. After questioning the catalyst behind the the blandest couple to ever cause a scandal on Bravo, as seen in Summer House Reunion Part 1 , we dive into recapping episodes 8 and 9 of the Real Housewives of Rhode Island.
