089: Losing Yourself In A Relationship and Why Healing Starts from the Inside Out

Losing yourself in a relationship? Why healing starts from the inside out. You've tried so hard to heal your relationship that you don't even know what you need anymore. You've read the books, saved the communication scripts, planned the date nights, and practiced the conversation word for word. And somewhere in all that trying, your peace ended up waiting on him. In this episode, Dr. Dar Hawks shares why almost all relationship advice starts in the wrong place, and why real healing starts with you, without leaving, without confronting him, and without giving less. In this episode: • What losing yourself in a relationship really looks like, day to day • Two ways to look for peace: from the outside in, or from the inside out • How your sense of okay moved outside of you, and why it isn't your fault • What changes when you start trusting yourself again, even before he does anything differently • What healing from the inside out is not Find the need underneath it all with the free Relationship Needs Quiz. 088: A Course Cannot Give You The Connection You Need

That ad promising “one conversation that changes everything” isn't just persuasive. It's built to find the exact place you hurt and offer fast relief. In this episode, I'm talking about why so many smart, capable women keep buying relationship courses, marriage programs, boundary scripts, and confidence resets, and still feel that same worry afterward. If you've ever finished the personal guide, tried every step, and then blamed yourself when real life came right back, I want you to hear this clearly: you did not fail. We look at what these ads are actually selling you. It's rarely the course itself. It's belonging, freedom, safety, being heard, being chosen, the exact needs you haven't even said out loud yet. And they pair that with urgency: countdown timers, “spots are filling up,” testimonials that sell a feeling more than a real process. I share a simple question that can save you a lot of money and self-blame: would I still want this if there were no urgency attached at all? Then we turn toward what actually helps. Deep relational healing isn't an information problem. A PDF can't know you, and a video series can't sit across from you and notice what's happening in your body when you talk about your marriage. Lasting change tends to happen in real connection, real conversation, and real time, with support that's built around you, not packaged for thousands. That's also why I've never run a single ad for my own work. It wouldn't be honest to promise you a shortcut when what actually helps takes real time dedicated to your lived experience. 087: What If Asking For Help Does Not Mean Something Is Broken

You almost reached out, then something stopped you. Maybe you told yourself it was not “bad enough” yet, maybe you worried it would turn into a sales pitch, or maybe you did the familiar thing and carried it alone because you are the strong one and everyone relies on you. I want to slow that moment down and tell the truth about it: that hesitation is often protection, not weakness, and it usually has a very specific fear underneath it. We walk through the real list women carry but rarely say out loud: fear of pressure and pushy marketing, fear that naming the problem makes the marriage “broken,” fear it will be your fault, fear it has to be a crisis to deserve help, fear of wasting time or money again, fear he will not participate, and the deepest one for many people, fear of hope. I also explain what my work is and is not: not a diagnosis, not accountability scoring, not a verdict on you or your partner. This is relationship coaching through the lens of relationship and communication healing, including ontological coaching, focused on being understood, hearing yourself clearly, and creating real shifts that can start with just you. You will leave with grounded questions to sit with during the week, especially the one that changes everything: is your fear protecting you, or is it protecting the relationship staying exactly as it is, even the parts that hurt? If you want a small next step, take my free relationship needs quiz at needs.drhawks.com (needs.drhks.com), and if it puts words to what you have been carrying, reach out for a private, confidential conversation at contact.drdarhawks.com. If this helped, subscribe, share it with a friend who is “fine on paper,” and leave a review so more women can find support sooner. 086: How to Stop Saying Yes When You Mean No

You know the moment: you say yes again, even though your whole body meant no. You keep the peace, manage the mood, and make it all look effortless and then you end the day feeling a little farther from yourself. We get honest about that pattern and why it creates the exact distance you’re trying to avoid: resentment, exhaustion, and a thin version of you that wants less and less. We also clean up the word “boundaries.” We don’t treat boundaries like a rule you hand to your partner or a threat designed to control behavior. We define a boundary as protection for your own needs so you can stay in your relationship as a whole person. Then we draw the line between a boundary and a wall: a wall keeps love out, while a boundary lets you stay close without self-abandonment. To make it practical, we walk through five sovereign relationship needs that often sit underneath conflict and people pleasing: love and belonging, freedom, fun, inner power, and safety. You’ll hear what each need looks like when it’s protected and what happens when it isn’t, plus two small steps to start right now without a big “table talk” or a perfect script. If you’ve been scared that a boundary will push him away, this will help you see why protecting a need is often what makes real intimacy possible. If this puts words to something you’ve carried for a long time, take the free quiz at needs.drhawks.com, then subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review with the need that hit you hardest. 085: Why He Mishears You Even When You’re Clear

You said it as clearly as you knew how. You were kind. You were honest. You waited for the right moment, you softened it so he would not get defensive, and he still walked away hearing something you never said. And now you are the one sitting up later, replaying it, wondering how the truth could go so wrong between you. If you have ever thought "I am always the one trying," or "I got so much better at communicating, so why do I still feel small," this episode is for you. Here is what I want you to know before you even press play: you are not bad at this, and you are not asking for too much. There is one piece of how being understood actually works that almost no one explains, and once you can see it, so much of what has been hurting starts to make sense. Come sit with me for this one. We will look at why honest words break down between two people who love each other. Why he can hear "you are failing me" when what you said was "I miss you." Why the two of you can be in the very same conversation and be answering completely different questions without either of you knowing it. And the small shifts you can make on your own, today, that help you feel understood again, without years of couples therapy and without waiting for him to change first. Nothing is wrong with you. You have just been missing one piece, and you are so much closer to it than you feel right now. When you are ready for one small step, take the free Relationship Needs Quiz. 084: When The Chore Chart Works But Your Heart Does Not

Your relationship can look stable, respectful, even loving and still leave you feeling alone. That kind of loneliness is hard to explain because nothing is “wrong” in an obvious way, yet something essential is missing. I’m Dr. Dar Hawks, and I’m naming the gap many women quietly carry: the difference between what gets done in a relationship and what you need to feel to experience real closeness. We walk through the core idea that practical needs and emotional needs are not the same. You can have the bills paid, the calendar managed, and a partner who does his part and still crave emotional intimacy. From there, I lay out five emotional needs I see underneath almost every story: love and belonging, freedom, fun, inner power, and safety and survival. As you listen, you’ll be able to pinpoint which need feels most “starved” right now and why that longing doesn’t make you needy, dramatic, or too much. We also talk about why emotional needs go unanswered even when there’s real love: how life crowds out connection, how conversations turn into logistics, and how many of us were taught to keep the peace by putting our own needs last. The turning point is learning to treat loneliness as information, not a personal failing and giving yourself permission to stop pretending you don’t feel what you feel. If you’re ready to name what you actually need, take the free relationship needs quiz at needs.drdarhawks.com or book a one-on-one conversation with me at session.drdarhawks.com. 083: Feeling Unloved is Not Proof of Not Being Loved

Do you ever lie awake wondering, does my husband still love me? If you have been feeling unloved in your own home, beside a person who is right there, this episode is for you. Dr. Dar gently separates the feeling of being unloved from the conclusion that the love is gone, and shows you the real, unmet longing hiding underneath the fear, and why naming that longing changes everything. In this episode: why feeling unloved is not the same as being unloved; why the conclusion goes unchallenged when you build the case alone in the dark; what the ache is actually pointing at; and why the very fact that you are asking is a sign of how much love is still alive in you. Take the free Relationship Needs Quiz to name the longing underneath the question: needs.drdarhawks.com Send us Fan Mail Support the show If you found your way here, something probably brought you. 082: Your Relationship Needs Matter

Someone asks you, "What do you need?" and your mind goes completely blank. Not because you are empty. Not because you are broken. But because you have spent so long tuned to everyone else, what he needs after a hard day, what the kids need, what everyone around you needs, that your own needs have stopped feeling like yours to have. And somewhere along the way, without you ever deciding to, you stopped checking. If you have ever said, "I don't even know what I need anymore," this episode is for you. We are going to slow all the way down together here. Because the blank space where your needs used to be is not a character flaw, and it is not a sign that you need less than you thought. It is a sign of how long you have been pointing yourself outward. And that can change. In this episode, you will hear what a relationship need actually is, and why it is not the same as a preference or a demand. You will hear why needs do not disappear when you stop naming them, only go underground, and why the resentment, exhaustion, or flat distance you cannot quite explain is often an unmet need pointing at itself. You will hear about the five core needs underneath most relationship hurt: belonging, freedom, fun, inner power, and safety. And you will hear how to follow the ache backward to find the one that has been there all along underneath everything you have been trying to say. If you are the one who gives everything and still goes home feeling a little unseen, you are not asking for too much. You just have not had the words yet. You do not have to figure this out by yourself. 081: You Are Not Too Much

Do you ever lie awake thinking, why do I feel like I'm too much for him? If you have learned to make your feelings small and your needs quiet to keep the peace, this episode is for you. Dr. Dar gently separates the feeling of being too much from the verdict you have quietly passed on yourself, and shows you the real, unmet need hiding underneath the shame, and why naming that need changes everything. In this episode: why too much is a feeling and not a fact about you; why the verdict goes unchallenged when you argue it alone in your own head; what the feeling is actually protecting; and why you never get closer by getting smaller. 080: The Real Reason You Feel Too Needy

The moment you think “I’m too needy” can feel like a verdict on your personality. I want to offer a different lens: what if that ache for closeness is not a flaw, but a signal that something important has been missing for too long? We talk through the quiet pattern I see in so many marriages and long-term relationships: you make a reasonable ask, it doesn’t happen, and instead of blaming your partner you start shrinking your needs. Your request turns into a hint. The hint turns into a riddle. And every missed riddle feeds the same painful conclusion: “I must be too much.” Along the way, both people end up lonely. You feel unseen, and your partner feels like nothing he does is ever enough. Then we turn the lights on with practical relationship advice you can use right away. I walk you through five core relationship needs that often sit underneath “neediness” (belonging, freedom to be yourself, play, voice and power, and safety), plus a simple way to translate longing into clear couples communication. We also break down the myth that “needing less” is what makes you easy to love, and why emotional intimacy grows when needs are named plainly and kindly. If you’re ready to stop apologizing for wanting connection, press play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review with the need you’re practicing naming out loud. 079: Sleeping Next To You And Still On My Own

You can be in the same bed, the same house, the same life and still feel a wall you can’t name. That quiet kind of pain often shows up as, “We’re fine. We don’t really fight. He’s a good person… but I feel so alone.” I’m Dr. Dar Hawkes, and I’m naming what’s happening when a marriage looks stable on the outside but feels emotionally empty on the inside. We dig into what emotional loneliness in marriage actually means and why it’s so exhausting. It’s not just “a busy season” or a bad week. It’s the slow shift where distance becomes the default and you stop expecting to feel connected. I also explain why this pattern so often isn’t about cruelty or punishment, but about missed emotional skills, unspoken relationship needs, and a cycle where one partner stops reaching and the other assumes everything is fine because the conflict went quiet. Then we get practical. I walk you through three changes that can help without waiting for your partner to transform first: stop adjusting your needs downward, name the specific gap instead of only saying “I feel lonely,” and create one small moment of connection every day. We also challenge the mind reading myth that “if you loved me, you’d just know,” and replace it with clear, kind asks that protect intimacy instead of eroding it. If this resonates, take five minutes to get clarity with the Sovereign Relationship Needs Quiz, then share this with someone who needs language for what they’re carrying.
