The White River Monster is a legendary aquatic cryptid reportedly sighted near Newport, Arkansas, since 1915. Described as a massive, gray-skinned creature—sometimes with a horn or spiny back—sightings peaked in 1937 and 1971. While some attribute sightings to misplaced elephant seals, manatees, sturgeons, or giant alligator gars, local affection for 'Whitey' led to the state establishing a protected river refuge in 1973.A
