Maurice Barbanell: The Forgotten Architect of Modern Spiritualism With Dr Nick Richbell

My Special Guest Is Dr Nick Richbell: Dr. Nick Richbell received his PhD in History from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. His research focuses on the history of Spiritualism, and his doctoral dissertation examined the life and influence of the medium Maurice Barbanell and his spirit guide, Silver Birch. While Silver Birch's teachings continue to be discussed in Spiritualist churches today, Maurice Barbanell's significant contributions are often overlooked. Barbanell devoted more than six decades to the Spiritualist movement, and Nick’s research seeks to restore his place in history as one of the twentieth century's most influential advocates of Spiritualism. Nick recently completed his book, Silver Birch’s Medium: Maurice Barbanell & Twentieth-Century Spiritualism, scheduled for publication on September 10, 2026. Based on his doctoral research, the book expands on his dissertation with previously unpublished photographs, two new chapters, and substantial revisions incorporating newly discovered archival material. As a Spiritualist himself, Nick embraces the movement's principle of thoughtful inquiry: to question what one reads and hears, and to accept only what resonates through personal experience and reflection. Walking With Ghosts: The Presence in the Cold Spot With Ciaran Farrell
Why do some places suddenly feel unnaturally cold—and could there be more to it than a simple draught? In this episode of Haunted History Chronicles, I welcome back psychical researcher Ciaran Farrell to explore one of the most frequently reported yet least understood features of paranormal encounters: cold spots. Far more than a simple drop in temperature, Ciaran explains why investigators have long associated cold spots with feelings of dread, nausea, unease and even the sensation of an unseen presence. Drawing on decades of research, he discusses how cold spots can be investigated using both scientific methods and eyewitness testimony, and why he believes they may provide important clues in understanding hauntings, shadow figures and apparitions. The conversation also explores whether environments can retain traces of past events, and examines how investigators attempt to distinguish between naturally occurring temperature changes and genuinely anomalous phenomena. My Special Guest Is Ciaran Farrell: Ciaran has served as a Council member of the Society for Psychical Research, SPR and the SPR’s Spontaneous Cases committee, SCC for many years. He has had many psychical experiences and adventures when he was a boy. This led him to formulate his own early theories about ghosts, poltergeists and telepathic veridical dreams of the dead gained through direct encounters with ghosts, spirits and poltergeists. He went on to build and design some of his own ghost-hunting equipment and to improve upon his previous theories about Cold Spots building on his own experience of them and his own ghost adventures. He formulated the concept of ‘my body as an instrument’ to monitor and evaluate his perception of the atmospheres of rooms and outdoor places and preternatural Cold Spots within them as well as the perception and detection of poltergeists and ghost encounters. Dreams, Sleep Paralysis and the Paranormal With TyLean Tuijl
Why Do So Many Extraordinary Experiences Happen at Night? Last week, TyLean Tuijl challenged many of the assumptions surrounding possession, encouraging us to move beyond Hollywood stereotypes and consider a far more complex psychological, cultural and experiential picture. In this follow-up conversation, we explore another question that naturally emerged from that discussion: Why do so many reports of hauntings, apparitions, possession experiences and other extraordinary encounters seem to occur while we're asleep—or in that strange space between sleeping and waking? Together, we explore why sleep may be one of the most important gateways to extraordinary experiences. From sleep paralysis and shadow figures to vivid dreams and altered states of consciousness, we examine why these experiences have been interpreted so differently across cultures and throughout history. We discuss what the Society for Psychical Research is discovering through Project Sleep, why sleep disturbances so often appear alongside reports of hauntings, possession and other spontaneous paranormal phenomena, and why listening without judgement is essential when people come forward with these deeply personal experiences. What happens when two of the world's most famous paranormal investigators arrive at the centre of an alleged haunting? My Special Guests Are Leanna Renee Hieber and Andrea Janes: Leanna Renee Hieber is an actress, playwright, artist and the award-winning, bestselling author of Gothic Victorian Fantasy novels for adults and teens such as the Strangely Beautiful, Eterna Files, Magic Most Foul and the bestselling Spectral City series. She grew up in rural Ohio inventing ghost stories, graduating with a BFA in Theatre and a focus in the Victorian Era from Miami University. Her books have been translated into many languages and have been selected for multiple book club editions. An enthusiastic public speaker about the history of the Gothic novel, she loves nothing more than a good ghost story and a finely tailored corset, wandering graveyards and adventuring around New York City, where she also works as a ghost tour guide for Boroughs of the Dead. Andrea Janes tells ghost stories for a living. She is the co-author of A Haunted History of Invisible Women and the owner and founder of Boroughs of the Dead, a boutique tour company dedicated to dark and unusual walking tours of New York City. She is currently at work on a Middle Grade historical fantasy novel set in New Amsterdam. Her personal obsessions include weird history, slapstick comediennes, witches, ghosts, all things nautical, and beer. Ghosts in the Headlines: Paul Weatherhead on Ghosts, Hoaxes, and Public Fear
At a time when science claims to explain almost everything, ghost stories still refuse to fade. In this episode of Haunted History Chronicles, I’m joined by author Paul Weatherhead to explore the strange cases that gripped Britain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — from violent apparitions and riotous ghost hunts to poltergeists, hoaxes, and even a royal spectre. Drawing on contemporary newspaper reports, Paul reveals how these hauntings reflect not just fear of the supernatural, but the social psychology of the people who reported, chased, and believed in them. Were these ghosts something more — or do they tell us more about ourselves than the dead? My Special Guest Paul Weatherhead Paul Weatherhead is a native of the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire and was brought up in Hebden Bridge. After several years teaching in Greece, Moscow and Northern Siberia, he returned to the Valley in the late 1990s. He has a longstanding obsession with the weird history of the area leading to the first edition of Weird Calderdale in 2003 which went on to become a local best-seller. His research into Alan Godfrey’s alien encounter led to a deeper investigation into the phenomenon, which formed his Master of Arts dissertation about the philosophy of alien abduction. Paul’s writing has been published in various magazines and journals, including Psychology Today, The Skeptic, Northern Life and Psychedelic Scene Magazine. Paul's fascination with the Halifax Slasher and other phantom attacker panics led to him working with renowned expert on mass hysteria Dr Robert Bartholomew on Social Panics and Phantom Attackers: A Study of Imaginary Assailants, published by Palgrave Macmillan. Guided By Spirits: The Story Of A Movement With Dr. Nick Richbell
In this episode of Haunted History Chronicles, I’m joined by Dr Nick Richbell, historian, archivist, and Spiritualist. Together, we discuss the fascinating world of spirit guides: what they are, how mediums have worked with them, and why they became such an important feature of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spiritualism. We explore famous cases, the rise of the movement, and the controversies surrounding fraud, scepticism, and representation in the Spiritualist press. With Nick’s unique perspective as both a historian and a believer, this episode offers a compelling look at Spiritualism’s past and what its enduring appeal reveals about society’s hopes, fears, and search for life beyond the veil. My Special Guest Is Dr. Nick Richbell Dr. Nick Richbell received his PhD in History from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. His area of research is the history of Spiritualism, and his doctoral dissertation is a biographical history about the medium Maurice Barbanell and his guide, Silver Birch. The teachings of Silver Birch are still talked about in Spiritualist churches today, however, Maurice Barbanell’s name is rarely mentioned. Barbanell spent 61-years dedicated to Spiritualism and Dr. Richbell’s research has started to correct this omission and put’s Barbanell back into the historical discourse about him being the twentieth-century’s leading propagandist of the religion and movement. Nick is currently finishing writing his book about Maurice Barbanell that will be published in 2026. Nick has long believed that there is more to life than an earthly existence. However, it was not until he started work as the Head of Special Collections and Archives at the University of Waterloo Library that he started to further consider the afterlife. The archives had two séance related collections. The Maines-Pincock Family collection holds records of seances conducted by the American medium William Cartheuser in the private home of Jenny O’Hara Pincock in St. Catharines, Ontario. Another collection, the Thomas Lacey Lecture collection contains over 400 lectures given by Lacey while in trance. Nick was able to bring in a new Lacey collection during his tenure at Waterloo: the Thomas Lacey séance collection: over 100 reel-to-reel tapes from the 1960s of recordings of seances conducted by Lacey in Kitchener, Ontario home. Nick is fascinated by the people in Spiritualism, and he began a journey, that continues today, to learn more about the British-born medium, Thomas Lacey. Nick was the research associate on the audio-documentary, The Ghost of Thomas Lacey, produced by Anthroscope Media. She later moved into the Civil Service, where she has advised an array of senior government and legal figures on matters of constitutional, public and criminal law. Microbes with Fangs: Death, Disease, and the Vampire’s Grasp with Michael Bell
The story of New England’s vampires begins with a scourge whose tragic trail is visible in cemeteries throughout the region. Incredible as it may seem today, vampires preyed upon their not-so-distant ancestors. Vampire attacks increased dramatically during the eighteenth century and remained the leading cause of death in New England throughout the nineteenth century. But this unseen killer did not resemble the clever Count Dracula of Bram Stoker’s imagination. Indeed, it was so small that it was undetectable. New England’s authentic vampires, you see, were pathogenic microbes (“bacteria with fangs,” as a nurse once described them). Prior to the twentieth century, a diagnosis of consumption (as pulmonary tuberculosis was called at that time) was a virtual death sentence. My Special Guest Is Michael Bell Michael E. Bell has a Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington; his dissertation topic was African American voodoo beliefs and practices. He has an M.A. in Folklore and Mythology from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a B.A. , with M.A. level course work completed, in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Bell was the Consulting Folklorist at the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, Providence, Rhode Island, for more than twenty-five years. He has also taught courses in folklore, English, anthropology and American studies at several colleges and universities. His book, Food for the Dead: On the Trail of New England's Vampires, was a BookSense 76 Pick and winner of the Lord Ruthven Assembly Award for Best Nonfiction Book on Vampires. He has completed the manuscript for a second book on American vampires, titled The Vampire’s Grasp: The Hidden History of Consumption in New England. Michael Bell and his wife, Carole, split their time between Rhode Island and Texas. In this episode, you will be able to: 1.
