How to Give Feedback—Especially When You’re Dreading it | Christine vs. Work 1 Jun 2021 --- 𝙎𝙪𝙗𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝘼𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮! ✨ https://www.youtube.com/c/HBRAscend ✨ Giving feedback can be tricky and awkward, especially if you’re conflict averse. How do you give feedback that’s empathetic yet effective? Giving feedback, especially if it’s constructive, can be difficult and agonizing to deliver. One extreme is to brush concerns under the rug and wait until the very last minute, with potentially disastrous results. The other extreme is to come across as blunt or judgemental—which can unintentionally create a defensive, disagreeable relationship. That said, the “gift of feedback” is one of the most valuable ways to help others improve and grow in their role and career. If done correctly, giving quality and effective feedback creates real, positive change. It pays to deliver feedback with clarity and empathy. In this episode, Innovation Editor Christine Liu turns to Liane Davey, author of “The Good Fight”, for answers on how to give critical feedback at work, and how to practice getting better at these tough conversations. We’d love to hear from you! Today · 6 minDeciphering the Economic Upheaval of the Covid-19 Crisis
Understanding the Economic Shock of the Covid-19 Crisis 21 May 2020 --- Predicting the path ahead has become nearly impossible, but we can speculate about the size and scale of the economic shock. Economic contagion is now spreading as fast as Covid-19 itself. Social distancing, intended to physically disrupt the spread, has severed the flow of goods and people, stalled economies, and is in the process of delivering a global recession. Predicting the path ahead has become nearly impossible, as multiple dimensions of the crisis are unprecedented and unknowable. Pressing questions include the path of the shock and recovery, whether economies will be able to return to their pre-shock output levels and growth rates, and whether there will be any structural legacy from the coronavirus crisis. This Explainer explores several scenarios to model the size and scale of the economic shock and the path ahead. Based on the HBR article by Philipp Carlsson-Szlezak, Martin Reeves and Paul Swartz --------------------------------------------------------------------- At Harvard Business Review, we believe in management. Today · 33 minHow Etsy Identified Its Purpose and Executed a Turnaround | Cold Call
How Etsy Found Its Purpose and Crafted a Turnaround | Cold Call 12 Jul 2023 --- Etsy, the online seller of handmade goods, was founded in 2005 as an alternative to companies that sold mass-manufactured products. The company grew substantially but remained unprofitable under the leadership of two early CEOs. Ten years later, Etsy went public and was forced into a new arena, where it was beholden to stakeholders who demanded financial success and accountability. Unable to contain costs, the company was almost bought out by private equity firms in 2017 – until CEO Josh Silverman arrived with a mission to save the company financially and, in the process, save its soul. Harvard Business School professor Ranjay Gulati discusses the purpose-driven turnaround Silverman and his team led at Etsy – to make the company profitable and improve its social and environmental impact – in the case, “Etsy: Crafting a Turnaround to Save the Business and Its Soul.” (https://hbsp.harvard.edu/product/821092-PDF-ENG?Ntt=821092) This episode originally aired on Cold Call on March 22, 2022.
