Keith Morris Part 1: BLACK FLAG

No need to have a nervous breakdown, we've finally got the legendary KEITH MORRIS on HardLore, one of the founding fathers of hardcore music. In part 1 of this incredible 4+ hour two-part special, we start at the beginning with Keith's introduction to music (he's a big fan) and deep dive into starting Panic (eventually known as BLACK FLAG) with Greg Ginn, what early punk rock was like in the South Bay and greater LA area in the late 70s, how Black Flag finally became Black Flag, recruiting the rest of the band, the incomparable artistic contributions of the great Raymond Pettibon, recording NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (and re-recording most of it with Circle Jerks), why and how he ultimately left the band, and so much more... Thanks to my incredible co-host Anthony Anzaldo of Ceremony for the fantastic assist and great questions/insight as always. Next week we pick up right where we leave off, with the beginning of the Circle Jerks... STRIFE: Andrew Kline on In This Defiance, Edge Breaks & Breaking the Rules of Hardcore

This week we’re joined by Andrew Kline, co-founder and guitarist of one of California hardcore’s most important bands: STRIFE. We dive into the many fateful encounters that had to happen for the band to start in the beginning of the 90s to usher in a new era and new generation of straight edge hardcore. Strife, along with Earth Crisis and Snapcase were eventually considered the original “Victory Records Trinity” and set the standard for what a hardcore band could do worldwide in the mid to late 90s. We break down their entire discography, including their breakout debut One Truth and their decade-defining masterpiece In This Defiance — all the way up until their breakup and eventual return (and misunderstood statement about no longer being straight edge) in the 2000s. An incredibly insightful and fascinating window into what is now an underrated band, but one that has seen what the top of the mountain of hardcore music has to offer. Check out HardLore's very own PLAN X RECORDS! A brand new home for straight edge hardcore. Debut release announced on Edge Day. ____________ HardLore: A Knotfest Series, fueled by Monster Energy. HardLore's Top 10 Most Important Episodes

Hello welcome! Decided to take a minute this week to reflect on the last 4 and a half years of the show and do a little deep dive into what are, in my opinion, our top 10 most important episodes. "Important" meaning episodes that we talked about often that felt like game changers in different ways: Creative growth, audience growth, and personal growth. I'm sure many will feel different and have their own picks, but these are the ones that I believe Bo and I would both would have picked. Hope you enjoy this unique solo deep dive before we post back to back to back episodes of pure HEAT coming up. __________ HardLore: A Knotfest Series, fueled by Monster Energy. Let the chaos begin... In March of this year, Bo and I had an idea to let the viewers decide on our next bracket episode (since you're never happy with the bands we pick) and this was the result. The top 64 bands, as voted by YOU! Every matchup was random in our first ever truly unpredictable live tournament challenge. CEREMONY: Never the Same Band Twice (With Ross Farrar & Anthony Anzaldo)

This week we're joined by vocalist Ross Farrar & guitarist Anthony Anzaldo of the great CEREMONY... From childhood friends to lifelong bandmates, we learn all about their individual introductions to punk and hardcore music and how that eventually lead to the fateful formation of now legendary bay area hardcore band, Ceremony. From the aggressive hardcore origins of their demo, first 7", and first 2 LPs, to their first big evolution and breakout Rohnert Park, all the way to their newest (and possibly best) album Tell Me Your Dream, we discuss everything in between, and the many "Gauntlets" in between that got us here. A thoroughly fun, fascinating inside look at what is truly one of the defining underground bands of the last 20+ years. SAMMY SIEGLER: JUDGE, Youth of Today, Side By Side & ...Limp Bizkit?

This is easily one of the best conversations to ever happen on this show. We stopped by Trust Records HQ for this incredible chat the great Sammy Siegler, one of hardcore's most prolific drummers to ever grace the throne. We dive into Sammy's origin as the Godfather of Open Handed Lefty drummers in hardcore, his brief stint in Gorilla Biscuits, joining Side By Side at 11-12 years old, the Project X 7", joining Youth of Today as a longtime fan of the band, ALL things Judge, Chung King and Bringin' It Down and his later work in CIV, Rival Schools, Glassjaw and somehow Limp Bizkit of all things. We're appropriately joined by my main man Mike Cesario of Twitching Tongues, Disgrace, Pity Sex, Forced Order and more to round out this mini panel of unique drummers. ANDY WILLIAMS: Every Time I Die, AEW, & The Parallels Between Music & Wrestling (4K Re-Upload)

Rest in peace to the universally beloved Andy "The Butcher" Williams of Every Time I Die, Atomic Rule and All Elite Wrestling. When it comes to leading by example, Andy was THE ultimate example to follow from the moment you met him. A beacon of kindness, the benchmark of cool, and an unbreakable pillar of love and support to everyone in his life. To know Andy was to love Andy, but more importantly, to know Andy was to feel loved by Andy. Andy was our second ever guest on HardLore, and technically our 3rd ever recorded episode. In his honor, we've upscaled this original episode to 4K to preserve this important conversation in the highest possible quality. We will love and miss Andy forever and I can't wait to hear the band that he and Bo will surely be working on. Goodbye my friend. Originally aired May 11th, 2022: "Colin and Bo welcome Andy Williams to the show to recount some of his favorite tour stories, from his early days touring with Buried Alive, his long tenure with Every Time I Die, and how he went on to be able to balance his music career with wrestling full time for AEW as half of The Butcher and The Blade." __________ 00:00:00 - Remembering Andy Williams 00:05:29 - 10 Bell Salute 00:05:58 - HardLore Episode 4: Andy Williams 00:07:01 - The Parallels Between Music & Wrestling 00:11:53 - What Set Andy on a New Path 00:17:13 - Andy & Buried Alive 00:22:54 - Andy's Music Taste Refining 00:30:08 - Andy Asks the Worst Places We've Stayed On Tour 00:35:22 - ETID's 1 Star Hotel Gimmick 00:39:19 - Andy Tour Stories 00:48:04 - Balancing AEW & ETID 00:52:32 - Andy Loves Little Gear Now, Tour Stories Cont. 00:58:29 - Wrestlers and Their Musical Interests 01:03:27 - Wrestling Is Songwriting 01:11:16 - ETID Setting the Example For Touring Bands 01:16:45 - Andy on the End of ETID

ARTHUR RIZK: Master of Extreme Music Production (War Hungry, Sumerlands, Eternal Champion)

We're joined by Pennsylvania's own ARTHUR RIZK! Longtime friend of the show and expert producer/engineer of all things extreme. Before discussing his work with bands like Blood Incantation, Power Trip, the Cavaleras, Cro-Mags, Kreator (and so many more)... We discuss Arthur's background as the once reluctant guitar player of legendary PA Hardcore band WAR HUNGRY, which lead to him finding his footing in the hardcore community in the early oughts as a young metalhead. These days Arthur is juggling his time as a musician between COLD WORLD, ETERNAL CHAMPION and SUMERLANDS when he's not manning the board for metal's biggest bands. We're also joined once again by guest co-host and another modern great in extreme music engineering, our very own Taylor Young. GOD'S HATE: Won't Be Disgraced Deep Dive W/ Anna Zanes

For the very first time on HardLore, the interviewer becomes the interviewee… Myself, Brody King and Taylor Young of GOD’S HATE sit down with Anna Zanes, who up until just days ago was the editor in chief of Alternative Press, to deep dive into the development and intention of our brand new 12” EP, WON’T BE DISGRACED. In our own words… Won’t Be Disgraced is a dense, urgent collection of 3 songs driven by grief and the state of the greater hardcore community and beyond. Your mind can be your most powerful tool or a weapon used against you in your darkest moments, and the only guaranteed way to fail yourself and your loved ones is to quit. As the world continues to be destroyed from within by greed, religious extremism, and 24 hour news cycles of division and violations of human rights… It has never been more apparent that all we have is each other. Use your hate to make a change. Don’t be disgraced. Dedicated to Bohan Daniel Lueders. You can stream all three songs and pre-order the record now: https://www.godshate.us You can support a few of the other journalists who were recently laid off below: • https://andrewsacher.substack.com/ • https://soundbitesnyc.substack.com/ _____________ HardLore: A Knotfest Series, fueled by Monster Energy. CARRY ON: Ryan George & Todd Jones on A Life Less Plagued, Breaking Edge & Reuniting

HardLore is joined by Ryan George & Todd Jones of CARRY ON for a thorough deep dive into the complete history of the band, following their long awaited return this past June at Tied Down fest, and on the eve of their hometown return at Sound & Fury festival. From beginning as a metallic band called Persevere in Atascadero, California, to changing their name (and their many lineups), recruiting Todd, Corey Williams and Nick Jett in the band, finding their musical identity on their Roll With The Punches 7", refining it on their one and only album A Life Less Plagued, and Ryan infamously deciding to stop being straight edge, quickly ending the band... This is a fascinating window into a band Bo and I grew up listening to and loving for 20+ years, and it was honor to be in the room as these two shared so much about such a beloved band. X's always win. ____________ HardLore: A Knotfest Series, fueled by Monster Energy. TERROR & Brody King: From the Valley to the World (A HardLore Special)

HardLore and special guest co-host Brody King are joined by TERROR founders Scott Vogel & Nick Jett for a special excursion all around the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. We learn all about the origin of the band, which started from the ruins of Carry On, and visit a few key hotspots around our mutual hometown that played an integral role in Terror’s story. We eventually meet up with Martín Stewart to discuss all things Terror and all things STILL SUFFER, their 10th and newest LP that released in this past April. This was something scheduled for Bo and I to do together, and I can’t thank of a more appropriate way to finally make it happen than with my LEFT hand man, Mr. Brody King. Thank you to Terror for joining us for this first special episode like this in a long time. ________________ HardLore: A Knotfest Series, fueled by Monster Energy. Brooke Smith: Silence of the Lambs, Grey’s Anatomy & The Infamous WARZONE WOMEN

This is another piece of HardLore history in the making, as we’re joined by our first ever actor, the great Brooke Smith of Silence of the Lambs, Grey’s Anatomy, Bates Motel and more! I am once again joined, very appropriately, by Alec Faber of Holy Blade, Twitching Tongues & God’s Hate (and formerly of the Reel Deal podcast with… me) Long before she graced the silver screen as the iconic Catherine Martin in Silence of the Lambs , you could find her romping around all over the lower east side as one of the infamous WARZONE WOMEN, and a staple of 1980’s New York Hardcore. She spent the golden decade of NYHC taking legendary photos of bands like Agnostic Front, Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Underdog and more, as documented in her incredible book Sunday Matinee. We get into her life as a legendary publicist’s daughter, befriending and falling out with the Cro-Mags, the informal formation of the Warzone Women, growing out of hardcore just as acting started to become more serious, her life changing by being in one of the greatest movies of all time, AGAIN with Grey’s Anatomy, and everything in between… An incredibly fun conversation with a genuine legend. Jade Puget: AFI, Creating Their Signature Sound & Surviving Mainstream Success

In this highly anticipated next chapter with one of our favorite bands, HardLore is finally joined by Jade Puget: the man who was instrumental in defining the iconic AFI sound. Featuring special guest co-host Alec Faber of God’s Hate, Twitching Tongues and Holy Blade. Following our legendary two part special with Davey Havok, we’re honored to share Jade’s side of the greater AFI story… Starting from the beginning with Jade discovering punk & hardcore in Ukiah, CA alongside his brother Smith, his days in Redemption 87, joining AFI and creating their definitive sound with his work on Black Sails in the Sunset, the surprising legacy of the All Hallows EP, his (and the band’s) frustrations with Nitro Records, the opportune timing of Art of Drowning, the cultural phenomenon of Sing the Sorrow and continuing success of Decemberunderground, the agony of Crash Love, the triumph of Burials, all the way to re-defining the AFI sound with Silver Bleeds the Black Sun. It was an honor and a joy to finally chat about all things AFI and hardcore with Jade, and we can only hope you enjoy this 3 hour chat as much as we did. ______________ HardLore: A Knotfest Series, fueled by Monster Energy. Patrick Walker of WARNING & 40 Watt Sun’s First Ever Podcast Interview

It is my tremendous honor to be joined by Patrick Walker of Warning and 40 Watt Sun for what is not only first ever non-print interview, but also HardLore's first ever 1 on 1 interview with a guest. In this appropriately intimate chat, we discuss his humble upbringing in Harlow, Essex UK.From the Jackson 5 and Tears For Fears to Revelation and Saint Vitus, we discover how Patrick's emotional connection with music flourished, and how he evolved into someone i've always considered to be one of the most personal and deliberate songwriters in the world. We learn the canonical standing of Warning and 40 Watt Sun in Patrick's point of view, the 20 year lasting legacy of "Watching From A Distance" and why now was finally time to return to Warning for "Rituals of Shame." After years of championing Patrick's work both on and off HardLore, it was an honor not only to have this chat, but to share more about someone whose work I admire so much. Pete Morcey: 100 Demons, Blood For Blood & The Evolution of Connecticut Hardcore

Destiny has come: After being officially crowned the hardest hardcore band of all time in our official tournament bracket… We’re finally joined by the great Pete Morcey, vocalist of 100 DEMONS for a long form, sit-down interview. We’re ALSO joined by special guest co-host Dan Seely of King Nine, for his historic 5th full-length appearance on a HardLore episode. We start from the beginning of Pete’s nearly 40 year musical career, from making the “definitive American oi record” in Forced Reality, spearheading heavy hardcore in Connecticut with Higher Force, joining 100 Demons and writing the iconic self-titled record, his dark folk masterpiece that is Murmur’s The Boundless Black, all the way to now singing for Blood For Blood, and making 100 Demons’ first record in 22 years, Embrace the Black Light. Thanks to Pete, Dan, and the Detroit Masonic Temple for having us. __________ HardLore: A Knotfest Series, fueled by Monster Energy.
