There was once a railway built for the dead. Not a metaphor. Not a folk tale. An actual, ticketed, timetabled railway — the London Necropolis Railway — which for decades carried London's coffins and mourners from the capital to Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey. The real service ended when its London terminus was bombed in the Second World War. It never reopened.Officially. In November 1954, railway clerk Arthur Mercer finds a first-class single ticket in his coat pocket. His name is handwritten on the front. A departure deadline is stamped on the back. And when Arthur goes looking for the platform this ticket belongs to, he finds it — waiting behind a gate that shouldn't exist, in a station that was declared lost seventy years ago. Aboard the train: passengers from every decade the railway ever ran. A woman in a green Victorian dress, blood in her hair, telling everyone who'll listen not to board. And, twelve carriages back, a thirteenth carriage that isn't on any plan — carrying a passenger who has been trying to complete one final journey for over fifty years. Instead, he discovers a tree that no one remembers planting... a tree that has stood for centuries, feeding on every accusation, every confession and every lie ever spoken in the shadow of Pendle Hill. No one who has struck the trunk with an axe has lived long enough to fell it. Episode Two: The Lantern Men of Dunwich

Once, Dunwich was one of the most important towns on England’s eastern coast. Then the sea began to take it. Street by street, church by church, much of the medieval town disappeared beneath the waves—leaving behind ruined cliffs, drowned legends and stories of noises coming from below the water line. In the winter of 1901, Samuel Harrow arrives in Dunwich to take temporary charge of an isolated lighthouse after its previous keeper vanishes without explanation. His instructions are simple: Keep the lamp burning. Maintain the mechanism. And guide ships safely through the darkness. But on his first night, Samuel sees lanterns moving across the marshes where no road exists. Behind them walk silent figures carrying black flames—and among them are faces belonging to people who have already died. As the tide retreats and the drowned streets of old Dunwich begin to reappear, Samuel discovers that the lights are not guiding the dead. They are searching for the living. Episode One: The Bell Beneath Blackmere
