New Research on 2 Million People shows the 28 Benefits and 16 Risks of Ozempic and Wegovy

In this episode we look at the extensive research on the benefits and risks of GLP-1s based on a study of almost 2 million patients. A groundbreaking study published in the respected science journal Nature. The research explored how GLP-1 receptor agonists (like Ozempic and Wegovy) impact 175 health conditions. Total Participants: 1,955,135 individuals Follow-up Period: Median of 3.68 years (range: 2.05-5.37 years) Total Study Duration: 7,239,854 person-years Key Objective: Systematically examine associations between GLP-1 receptor agonist use and 175 health outcomes Picture this: a team of dedicated researchers tracking nearly two million people over several years. To put this into perspective, most medical studies might include a few thousand participants. This study represents the gold standard: large-scale, long-term and rigorously documented. The results show that GLP-1 medications can help with many health problems, from heart disease to mental health. However, the study also points out some risks, especially with gastrointestinal issues and kidney health. Though there are still risks to consider, this research shows how far we’ve come in understanding and improving health. We still have challenges to face, but it highlights how much we can achieve when we truly understand our bodies. Read our companion blog post on this episode

GLP-1 Weight Loss Medication Dosage Guide for Wegovy and Zepbound

This podcast offers a comprehensive guide to using GLP-1 medications like Wegovy and Zepbound for weight management, highlighting that these injectable drugs are adjuncts to diet and exercise, not standalone solutions. In this podcast we detail the gradual dose escalation schedules ("start low, go slow") designed to improve tolerability and minimize common gastrointestinal side effects as the body adjusts to the medication. They emphasize that the initial doses are primarily for acclimatization and that reaching the full therapeutic effect requires patience over several months. This episode reviews alternative strategies some healthcare providers use with patients. Crucially, this episode underscores the importance of long-term use for sustained weight management, as stopping the medication often leads to weight regain, and stress the need for a strong partnership with a healthcare provider to tailor dosing based on individual response, tolerability, and overall health. The Risks of Compounded Semaglutide and Tirzepatide: Navigating the Shift from Shortage Relief to Safety Concerns

Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide provided a vital stopgap during shortages, but their role has come under scrutiny as supply stabilizes. While affordability remains a pressing issue—particularly for those without insurance coverage—the risks of inconsistent quality, contamination, and adverse effects cannot be ignored. With pharmaceutical giants like Eli Lilly pushing for tighter restrictions and the FDA signaling a return to regulated channels, consumers face a pivotal choice. Injecting these medications demands confidence in their safety, and for now, the surest path lies with FDA-approved products. For those still drawn to compounded options, rigorous due diligence and medical oversight are non-negotiable steps to mitigate the gamble. This is the official podcast of GLP-1 Tribe. The Rise of GLP-1 Medications in the United States: Adoption, Usage, and Economic Impact

GLP-1 receptor agonists have rapidly transformed the landscape of diabetes and weight management treatment in the United States and globally. Initially approved for type 2 diabetes, these medications—including brands like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound—have gained widespread attention for their effectiveness in both glycemic control and significant weight loss. This article examines the current state of GLP-1 adoption, growth trends, and the complex economic factors surrounding their use. Adoption Rates in the United States As of mid-2024, approximately 10-12 million Americans were estimated to be taking GLP-1 medications for diabetes or weight management. This represents a substantial increase from just 3-4 million users in 2020. The adoption has been particularly pronounced since the FDA approval of semaglutide (Wegovy) for weight management in June 2021 and tirzepatide (Zepbound) in late 2023. Morgan Stanley analysts projected that by the end of 2024, the number of Americans using these medications could reach 15 million, representing about 4.5% of the U.S. adult population. Global Usage Patterns Globally, GLP-1 medication usage reached approximately 40 million patients by mid-2024, with the highest adoption rates in North America and Europe. The Asia-Pacific region has shown increasing adoption. Growth Trajectory Over Five Years The growth rate of GLP-1 medications in the United States has been nothing short of extraordinary: 2019-2020: ~20% year-over-year growth (primarily diabetes indications) 2020-2021: ~45% growth (increasing off-label use for weight management) 2021-2022: ~85% growth (following Wegovy approval for weight management) 2022-2023: ~110% growth (expanding insurance coverage and awareness) 2023-2024: ~70% growth (supply constraints moderating growth despite demand) This represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 60% over the five-year period, making GLP-1 medications one of the fastest-growing pharmaceutical categories in U.S. history. The Economics of GLP-1 Medications Pricing Structure The retail price for monthly prescriptions of GLP-1 medications in the United States typically ranges from $900 to $1,350, depending on the specific medication and dosage: Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy): $900-$1,300 per month Tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound): $1,000-$1,350 per month Liraglutide (Victoza/Saxenda): $850-$1,200 per month These prices have remained relatively stable despite growing demand, with manufacturers offering savings programs to qualified patients while maintaining high list prices for negotiation with insurance companies. Future Outlook Analysts project that by 2030, if current trends continue and supply constraints are resolved, the U.S. could see 25-30 million users of GLP-1 medications, representing a market exceeding $100 billion annually. Their rapid adoption represents a paradigm shift in how obesity is medically addressed in the United States. However, the economic considerations—including high costs, insurance coverage limitations, and healthcare system impacts—remain significant challenges. As usage continues to grow, finding sustainable economic models for these effective but expensive medications will be crucial for ensuring equitable access while managing healthcare costs. Why are GLP-1 Medications 10X More Expensive in the USA? Who Pays for the Most Prescribed Medications in America?

This report synthesizes information from 100+ sources regarding the significant price disparities for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (e.g., Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound, Mounjaro) between the United States and other developed countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, and nations within the European Union (primarily Germany and France). The analysis reveals that the higher costs in the US are a result of a complex interplay of factors, including pharmaceutical company pricing strategies, the unique structure of the US healthcare system (particularly the role of insurance companies and Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs)), the absence of direct government negotiation on drug prices, robust patent laws and market exclusivity, and the impact of direct-to-consumer advertising. PBM practices, specifically rebate negotiations and formulary management, are highlighted as significant contributors to maintaining high list prices and creating a disconnect between negotiated discounts and patient out-of-pocket expenses. Key Findings and Themes: Significant Price Disparities Pharmaceutical Company Pricing Strategies Fragmented US Healthcare System and the Role of PBMs Robust Patent Laws and Market Exclusivity Implications: The high cost of GLP-1 medications in the US has significant implications, including: Restricted patient access due to affordability issues. Higher overall healthcare spending. Potential negative impacts on public health outcomes. Disproportionate financial burden on uninsured or underinsured individuals and those in high-deductible plans. Policy Considerations (as suggested by the sources): Exploring mechanisms for government negotiation of drug prices. Re-evaluating the balance between patent protection and drug affordability. Considering regulations around direct-to-consumer advertising. Increasing transparency and reforming the practices of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), such as delinking rebates from list prices and banning spread pricing. The elevated cost of GLP-1 medications in the United States is a multifaceted problem stemming from a unique combination of market dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and the behaviors of key players within the pharmaceutical supply chain. Addressing this issue will require comprehensive policy interventions that tackle pricing strategies, the role of intermediaries, and the broader healthcare system to ensure equitable access to these important therapies. Is Drinking More Water the Key to Losing More Weight on Wegovy, Ozempic or Zepbound?

In this episode we explore if drinking more water is the secret to losing more weight on a GLP-1 like Ozempic, Wegovy or Zepbound. Drinking more water helps you lose more weight because: Reduces side effects from GLP-1 medications (especially constipation and nausea) Helps maintain energy levels and cognitive function Supports kidney function for processing medications Promote healthy digestion Supports your metabolism and weight management I think the general estimate we were told as kids to drink 8 cups of water a day is probably not enough water for most people on a GLP-1. How much is enough water every day? It depends on a number of variables including your age, activity level, weight, climate etc. The math gets pretty complex so we created a free Drink More Water calculator that calculates a personal estimate for how much water people on GLP-1 journey should drink daily to lose more weight. https://glp1tribe.com/water-calculator One good rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces of water each day. On top of that, many healthcare professionals have suggested people on GLP-1 should drink 10% more water than the normal person. But the reason for the calculator is when you factor in all the variables we should probably drink a lot more water than we think. - Consider using one of the cool bluetooth water bottles that connects to an app and tracks your daily water consumption. - One thing I have found helpful is drinking small sips of water all day instead of a lot at once. - Watermelon is great because it's 92% water! The good news is testing if drinking more water improves results is free and easy thing for everyone to try. I hope this is helpful for others.

How Long Should People Take Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound? What is Maintenance Mode? Long Term Usage Pros and Cons

The duration of GLP-1 medication use is often long-term for both type 2 diabetes and weight management, with many patients continuing on these medications in a "maintenance mode" after achieving initial treatment goals. This maintenance phase is crucial for sustaining weight loss, maintaining glycemic control, and potentially realizing the cardioprotective and renoprotective benefits associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists. While long-term GLP-1 therapy offers significant advantages, it is essential to consider the potential risks, side effects, and the often substantial cost of these medications. The decision regarding the appropriate duration of treatment is highly individualized and should be made through a collaborative discussion between the patient and their healthcare provider, taking into account factors such as treatment response, individual goals, presence of comorbidities, tolerability, lifestyle, and socioeconomic considerations. Continuous monitoring is vital for patients in maintenance mode to ensure ongoing effectiveness and to detect any potential long-term adverse effects. Finally, while GLP-1 medications are a powerful tool, a holistic approach to managing weight and blood sugar should always include lifestyle modifications, and patients should be aware of alternative strategies that can support their long-term health and well-being. When used appropriately and for the necessary duration, GLP-1 receptor agonists hold significant promise in improving the health and quality of life for individuals with type 2 diabetes and obesity.

This podcast explain the connection between GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, and hair loss experienced by some users. They also discuss the typical timeline for hair regrowth and when seeking professional medical help is recommended.
