233: INPERSON: RYZE vs MUD\WTR — WORTH THE HYPE?

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review Are mushroom coffees actually worth the hype—or are we just paying $40+ for fancy dirt water? In this episode of Flora Funga Podcast, KK and Karleen put two of the biggest names in functional mushroom drinks head-to-head: RYZE Mushroom Coffee and MUD\WTR Matcha. We taste-test both, compare caffeine and mushroom content, dig into RYZE's six-mushroom blend versus MUD\WTR's chaga, reishi, lion's mane and cordyceps blend, and talk about the surprisingly important differences between whole mushroom powder, mycelium, fruiting bodies and mushroom extracts. We also get into why ingredient sourcing and third-party testing matter, whether you'd be better off adding mushroom extracts to coffee you already love, and even how you can make mushroom teas and dual extracts at home. After plenty of questionable smells, earthy sips and brutally honest ratings, RYZE lands around a 6/10 while MUD\WTR Matcha takes the win at roughly 8–8.5/10. We also shout out Everyday Dose, Laird Superfood, Christopher Hobbs' mushroom extraction teachings and Schedule 35 along the way. If you've been staring at mushroom coffee in Target wondering whether it's actually worth your money, this one's for you. 231:INPERSON--Telluride Mushroom Festival 2026 RECAP

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review In this episode of the Flora Funga Podcast, I’m taking you behind the scenes of my unforgettable weekend at the Telluride Mushroom Festival. From landing in Colorado and making the long drive into the mountains, to waking up to unreal views, exploring mushroom-themed restaurants, catching live music and lectures, foraging for boletes and porcini, riding the gondola into town, and throwing an absolutely wild house party, this trip was one for the books. I spent most of the weekend connecting with an amazing crew of mushroom lovers, cooking up fresh finds, dancing, exploring the festival, and really just allowing myself to have fun and enjoy the community. A huge thank you to Mycology Mike for helping me get a festival ticket, Rob and everyone who made me feel at home in Telluride, and especially Schedule 35 for sponsoring my adventure and helping make this entire trip possible. This year was very different from my last Telluride experience, but my goal was simple: have fun, make meaningful connections, and enjoy every second of it—and that’s exactly what I did. So now I have to ask: who’s coming to Telluride with me next year? Today’s episode is supported by Schedule 35. Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review In this episode of the Flora Funga Podcast, KK sits down with Brice Parker, founder of Mush-Melo, to explore how he turned the nostalgic experience of roasting marshmallows around a campfire into a creative way to enjoy functional mushrooms. Brice shares the inspiration behind Mush-melo, the challenges of formulating mushroom-infused marshmallows, and the brand’s three blends—including daytime marshmallows with lion’s mane and gotu kola, nighttime marshmallows with reishi and damiana, and a five-mushroom longevity blend featuring turkey tail, cordyceps, chaga, shiitake, and maitake. They also discuss clean ingredients, mushroom extracts, future seasonal flavors and marshmallow-based products, the importance of getting outside and connecting with nature, and Mush-Melo's efforts to give back through programs supporting forests and tree planting. Plus, Brice fires up an actual campfire during the interview and makes a functional mushroom s’more on camera—so this is definitely an episode worth watching on YouTube! 225: EVERYTHING You Need to Know About Tomatoes

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review Frank Hyman returns to the Flora Funga Podcast to dive into his newest book, Ripe Tomato Revolution, a playful and practical guide that uses tomatoes as the gateway into gardening, self-reliance, and finding your calling. Known for How to Forage for Mushrooms Without Dying, Frank brings his signature mix of humor, science, storytelling, and hands-on experience to everything from growing and transplanting tomatoes to drip irrigation, trellising, rain protection, pest management, heirlooms, hybrids, and why healthy gardens depend on working with beneficial insects instead of spraying everything in sight. Along the way, he shares stories from his unconventional path as a “successful college dropout,” reflections on mastering multiple callings, and practical wisdom from decades of farming, carpentry, writing, and gardening. This episode also wanders into wonderfully weird territory, including tomato-tobacco grafting, the possibility of “nicotine tomatoes,” Everglade tomatoes on Naked and Afraid, and why the humble tomato can teach us so much about plants, people, purpose, and resilience. 224: Stop Guessing-- This Map Predicts Mushroom Hotspots

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review Tyler Hacking returns to talk about his new mushroom map guides and the GIS technology behind them. Tyler explains how his scientific background in mycology and geospatial analysis led him to create predictive mushroom maps using tools like ArcGIS Pro. Instead of simply copying public mushroom sightings, his process layers historical collection data with habitat factors such as tree associations, water, fire history, elevation, soil, slope, aspect, and other ecological parameters to predict where mushrooms are most likely to grow. He focuses especially on morels, but also discusses other edible mushrooms like chicken of the woods, oyster mushrooms, pheasant back, and porcini. Tyler walks through how the guides are built state by state, with current maps including places like California, Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin in progress. Each guide includes multiple high-resolution maps and hundreds of specific GPS coordinates designed to help foragers save time, gas, and frustration by getting closer to likely mushroom habitat. He also emphasizes that the maps are meant to support responsible mushroom hunting, including ethical harvesting practices, proper identification, and sustainable foraging. The conversation also touches on fire morels, the limits of public databases, customer feedback, affiliate opportunities, donations to mycological societies, and Tyler’s future plans for commercial, medicinal, and nutraceutical mushroom mapping. 223: Can We Hear What Plants Are Feeling? Featuring the Master Plants Orchestra

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review I sit down with Tritone to explore the world of plant biosonification and the concept behind Master Plants Orchestra, an orchestra played entirely by plants. Using electrodes placed on plant leaves, Tritone converts bioelectric signals from up to eight plants into musical notes, creating soundscapes that range from calming meditation music to experimental compositions that challenge traditional human ideas of melody and scale. The conversation dives into how plant electrophysiology changes with species, water, light, and environmental conditions, and how those subtle shifts can be translated into sound. Tritone also shares the history of plant music, from early experiments in the Italian spiritual community of Damanhur to modern open-source tools being developed with Fatty Recording Co. The episode expands beyond music into education, science, AI, mushroom biosonification, and the deeper question of how technology can help humans reconnect with the natural world by listening more closely to plants, fungi, and the hidden electrical conversations happening all around us. 220: How to Make Traditional Delicious Mead with DnD Meadery

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review KK sits down with Derek of D&D Meadery to explore the ancient, flavorful, and surprisingly approachable world of mead-making. Derek shares how mead, often considered the oldest fermented beverage, begins with the simple combination of honey, water, and yeast, but becomes deeply complex through fermentation, yeast selection, local honey sources, seasonal variation, and careful quality control. Together, KK and Derek discuss the history of mead, from its ritual and celebratory roots to its reputation as a drink once reserved for nobility, while also breaking down the modern process of creating traditional honey wine. Derek walks through the importance of using high-quality raw honey, clean water, sanitation, and thoughtful fermentation practices, while explaining how different ingredients can shape the final flavor. The conversation touches on fruit meads, maple meads, dry and sweet styles, back-sweetening, stabilizing, and the creative possibilities of pairing honey with ingredients like coffee, cacao, and buckwheat honey. Derek also shares the story behind D&D Meadery’s German family crest, their award-winning traditional mead, and their growing wholesale presence across Northeast Ohio. From ancient fermentation to modern meadery expansion, this episode is a warm and educational introduction to the craft, culture, and creativity behind making mead -------------------------------------------------- Today’s episode is supported by Schedule 35. Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review This episode was such a fun, open-minded wander through fungi, philosophy, psychedelics, podcasting, and the weird little threads that connect us all. KK sat down with Joel and Jacob from The Open Minded Podcast to talk about their journey as curious young hosts exploring psychology, religion, consciousness, and the big questions of life. The conversation drifted into mushrooms, plant medicine, psychedelic experiences, ego, perception, and how these moments can change the way we see ourselves and the world around us. They also dug into what mushroom culture looks like in the UK compared to the U.S., touching on stigma, underground communities, and how normalized alcohol is while fungi still gets side-eyed. It was a thoughtful, funny, and curiosity-filled chat about growth, awareness, and staying open to the mystery. Open Minded Podcast Today’s episode is supported by Schedule 35. 218: Why your Accounts are Getting Banned...Mycology Meets Social Media

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review In this episode of Flora Funga Podcast, KK sits down with Victoria to explore the complicated intersection of mycology, social media, AI moderation, and content creator survival. They discuss why mushroom-related accounts and cultivation content are increasingly vulnerable to automated takedowns, how AI-driven platform policies can misread educational mycology content as harmful, and why creators need stronger backups, clearer disclaimers, platform-specific strategies, and community advocacy. Victoria also shares practical insight into account recovery, algorithmic bias, AI governance, and how mushroom educators can stay resilient while continuing to spread fungal awareness online. This episode is for educational and informational purposes only. Any discussion of mushrooms, mushroom cultivation, social media policy, account recovery, artificial intelligence, or platform moderation is not legal, medical, financial, or professional advice. Listeners are responsible for understanding and following the laws, regulations, and platform policies that apply in their location and on the platforms they use. Flora Funga Podcast does not encourage illegal activity, policy evasion, or unsafe mushroom practices. Our goal is to support education, awareness, responsible communication, and better understanding of how mycology content is treated online. all resources can be found on florafungapodcast.com/218 I got a new phone number to text in with any questions, comments, or photos! 727-477-5974 Support the show Text (727) 477-5974 Flora Funga Phone with your questions, comments, concerns, and IDs Flora Funga: Calm & Collected Tincture — Flora Funga Podcast GoFundME If you like the podcast please think of donating to Keep the show happening $keenie19 on Cash App Follow my other social media sites to interact and engage with me: Email me to be on the podcast or inperson Interview: floraandfungapodcast@gmail.com Facebook Instagram Twitter TikTok YouTube Patreon --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zbiotics: "FLORA10" Drink ZBiotics before drinking alcohol-Alcohol produces acetaldehyde, a byproduct that your next day ...

217: STREET INTERVIEW: Healing Autoimmune Disease through Plant Medicine

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review Meet Lois Duncun...She has a pretty wild and beautiful healing story. After going through systemic lupus, which is medically documented, she credits so much of her healing to plants, Indigenous medicines, mindset work, and Gene Keys. She feels like she’s lived a lot of lives in this one, and some of those chapters were really hard. Through trauma, trial and error, and lessons learned the long way, she found her way back to radical accountability, purpose, and a deeper connection with herself. She learned how to turn pain into power, and now she really strives to live what she teaches. She only guides people in spaces where she has true lived experience, where she’s done the work, and where she can speak from the heart. She is living proof that healing is possible. Not perfect, not always linear, but real — and that true peace in the soul is something we can come back to.
