Flag Hunters Golf Podcast

Jesse Perryman

Most golfers talk themselves out of a great shot before they even swing. Welcome to the Flag Hunters Golf Podcast. After 31 years as a pro caddie, I’ve learned that the biggest obstacles usually aren’t in your swing, they’re in your mind. Flag Hunters is about getting out of your own way, finding greater freedom and inner peace so that better golf becomes the byproduct of a healthier relationship with yourself. Through conversations exploring instruction, psychology, neuroscience, physical performance, and faith, we discover how to overcome fear, quiet the inner critic, develop self-trust, and embrace the power of surrender. Our mission is simple: to help you become a freer, more confident, more peaceful, and more hopeful version of yourself, on and off the course. Because better golf can become a pathway to a better life.

Play Better Golf By Tracking Recovery

Send us Fan Mail What if your golf swing isn’t broken — you’re just not fully recovered? Most golfers immediately look to their swing mechanics when their performance changes from one day to the next. But what if sleep, stress, recovery, and physical readiness are playing a bigger role than we realize? In this episode of The Flag Hunters Golf Podcast, host Jesse Perryman welcomes Alex Nelson of Pulse59 for a fascinating conversation about the relationship between recovery, performance, and playing better golf. Together, they explore how understanding your body can help you make smarter decisions on the course, why your warm-up routine might not always be helping, and how accepting the game you have today can lead to greater consistency. Inside this episode: How sleep and recovery influence golf performance Why your golf swing can feel different from day to day What Alex discovered by tracking his warm-up routines The relationship between stress, readiness, and scoring How acceptance and adaptability support better golf Why improving your game isn’t always about changing your technique The takeaway: Better golf begins with greater awareness — of your body, your mind, and the game you’re bringing to the course today. Whether you’re a competitive amateur, weekend golfer, or someone passionate about personal growth, this conversation offers a different perspective on improvement. If this episode resonates with you, share it with a fellow golfer and subscribe to The Flag Hunters Golf Podcast. Play the game you have today. Alex Smith: Resilience, Adversity & the Courage to Keep Going

Send us Fan Mail Alex Smith joins the Flag Hunters Golf Podcast for a deeply personal conversation about resilience, adversity, identity, and what it means to keep moving forward when life doesn’t go according to plan. From the instability of his early years with the San Francisco 49ers, to losing his starting position while playing some of the best football of his career, to the devastating leg injury that threatened far more than his ability to play football, Alex’s journey is an extraordinary study in perseverance. But this conversation goes beyond football. We explore how Alex handled uncertainty, remained a teammate through disappointment, rebuilt trust in himself and his body, and discovered what adversity can teach us about character. And through the lens of golf, we examine something every athlete—and every human being—eventually confronts: How do we respond when the outcome is no longer ours to control? This is a conversation about competing, suffering, perspective, gratitude, and taking the next step—even when you can’t see where the road leads. One play at a time. One shot at a time. One day at a time. — Jesse Perryman The Flag Hunters Golf Podcast Support the show CONNECT WITH FLAG HUNTERS Jesse Perryman — Host Instagram: @flaghuntersgolfpod Text: (831) 275-8804 CONNECT WITH JUSTIN BEST Instagram: @elitegolfswing Email: justin@elitegolfswing.com THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS A special thank-you to the brands supporting The Flag Hunters Golf Podcast: Amble Clothing • JumboMax Grips • Mizuno Golf Your support helps us continue bringing meaningful conversations about golf, performance, and personal growth to golfers everywhere. #GolfPodcast #GolfImprovement #GolfRecovery #GolfMindset #FlagHunters

Mike Bender On Efficient Swings And Better Practice

Send us Fan Mail We sit down with Hall of Fame coach Mike Bender to talk about building an efficient golf swing that holds up under pressure, not just a swing that looks good in slow motion. We dig into how great players practice, how motor learning actually works, and why commitment to one clear plan beats chasing the newest tip. • Mike’s origin story and how early obsession shaped his path • Why organized instruction and clear models matter more than random tips • The difference between building a foundation and stacking band-aids • Imperatives vs essentials and what Bender prioritizes in transition • How “arms feel” can produce better sequencing than you expect • Zach Johnson’s development, tendencies, and the value of maintenance mode • A scoring-first blueprint for shorter hitters: drive it well, wedge it tight, putt great • Wedge play principles: lower launch, higher spin, better distance control • Motor programs, myelin, exaggeration, and why feedback speeds change • Why you should not try to rebuild your swing during a round • How to choose a coach, what to ask, and why buy-in is everything • Technology as an analysis tool, not the teacher, and why numbers can block progress • The speed myth Bender would banish and what he teaches. Send us Fan Mail We talk with Mark Immelman about why the best golfers separate themselves without needing a perfect swing. We dig into identity, self-belief, coaching communication, and how to use stats and tech without losing the plot on the scorecard. • player identity as the real separator when talent is close • self-belief that holds up without arrogance • why mental toughness shows up when winning stops • making a bad day decent as a scoring superpower • the myth that a better swing guarantees lower scores • the “golf lifestyle” of practice choices, rest, and pressure reps • why players and coaches quit one process too early • teaching as listening and speaking the student’s language • “your message is only as good as what is understood” • three swing grades: solid strike, leveraged speed, repeatable under pressure • keeping the game simple and trusting what you know • the limits of strokes gained for decision-making and winning • stats as context, not a substitute for golf IQ • launch monitors as tools, not the whole lesson • Mark’s “top 12” coaching influences and old-school principles • how swing fads follow whoever is playing well • the Jim Furyk lesson: results under pressure matter more than looks • how Lessons from the Best was built from podcast gold • a Masters-week putting reset that focused on start line Search and subscribe to that. Your Thoughts Can Show Up And You Can Still Play. In Conversation with Karl Morris

Send us Fan Mail We sit down with Karl Morris to dig into The Mind Caddy and the Mind Factor certification, then we challenge the myth that great golf requires perfect thoughts or a perfect state. We break down how attention, acceptance, and adaptable tasks help us access the skills we already have when pressure shows up. • Karl’s motivation for writing an accessible mental game book built around 46 real coaching lessons • why “being in the zone” is not the goal and how top players perform with uncomfortable thoughts • attention as the currency of performance and the skill of becoming an “attention detective” • separating from thoughts by changing our relationship to them rather than trying to control them • managing the in-between time on the course using senses, awareness, and simple resets • stable confidence through accepting the reality of ones, twos, and threes in every round • using pre-round journaling and “if then” planning to avoid default reactions under stress • adaptability over consistency and letting the shot create the swing on the course • shrinking the task when the world feels too big and noticing the stories we tell ourselves The book, The Mind Caddy, it’s available across the world on Amazon. Are You Chasing A Better Swing Or A Better Score

Send us Fan Mail We sit down with PGA Professional Brent Dale to talk about what actually makes golfers improve and why the internet’s “secret moves” often pull players backward. We dig into junior development, parent involvement, and how to blend old school coaching, smart tech use, and motor learning so practice translates to lower scores. • why Australia produces so many elite golfers through multi-sport childhoods and better access • the real economics of golf instruction and why value beats hourly price • why social media golf tips seduce both beginners and good players into constant tinkering • setting realistic junior goals without crushing ambition and building a roadmap • how parents help by supporting the plan instead of coaching over it • when tech like TrackMan helps and when it turns golf into “golf numbers” • decluttering the swing by focusing on non-negotiables and one change at a time • motor learning strategies that stick using slow swings, half swings, pause drills and repetition over months • common instruction myths including over-shallowing and one-size-fits-all fixes • how to develop discernment through tools design, ball flight laws and honest self-assessment Please remember to rate, review, and subscribe Support the show CONNECT WITH FLAG HUNTERS Jesse Perryman — Host Instagram: @flaghuntersgolfpod Text: (831) 275-8804 CONNECT WITH JUSTIN BEST Instagram: @elitegolfswing Email: justin@elitegolfswing.com THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS A special thank-you to the brands supporting The Flag Hunters Golf Podcast: Amble Clothing • JumboMax Grips • Mizuno Golf Your support helps us continue bringing meaningful conversations about golf, performance, and personal growth to golfers everywhere. #GolfPodcast #GolfImprovement #GolfRecovery #GolfMindset #FlagHunters
