    The Response with renowned author and journalist David Shukman.

    David Shukman, former BBC science editor and author of The Response, joined the podcast to discuss how climate change is already causing serious harm, e.g. 2022 UK wildfires that destroyed 40+ homes, hospital IT failures, and the Bordeaux-area fires. He digs into why adaptation should not be seen as giving up on emissions elimination. He traced oil industry denial tactics back to a 1959 API conference and compared them to Big Tobacco’s playbook, while contrasting China’s aggressive clean-tech push (hydrogen, EVs, solar) with Western retreat. Despite the grim data, he is optimistic, arguing solutions are now cheap and available. About David Shukman: As the BBC’s first Science Editor, David Shukman led its coverage of the environment for nearly twenty years. Praised by Sir David Attenborough as “a leader in raising awareness of the climate emergency”, he won awards for his pioneering broadcasts from remote frontlines including the Arctic and the Amazon. After beginning his BBC career reporting on The Troubles in Northern Ireland, David became Defence and Diplomatic Correspondent witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall and covering the aftermath of the Cold War. His assignments took him to mote than 100 countries. From 2003 to 2021, climate change was one of David's priorities and he reported from a dozen of the UN's climate summits. Now working as an independent speaker and consultant, David is a Visiting Professor in Practice at the LSE’s Grantham Research Institute, a member of the Advisory Board of Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment and an adviser to The Goals House. About Alasdair Lumsden: Alasdair is Co-founder and Director of Carbon Neutral Fuels (CNF), a UK-based Sustainable Aviation Fuel developer. About Carbon Neutral Fuels (CNF): CNF was co-founded by Alasdair Lumsden and Sophie Zienkiewicz on the sidelines of COP26 in Glasgow in 2021. Based in the UK, CNF is endeavoring to replace liquid fossil fuels with a more sustainable alternative and developing their modular and scalable Power-to-Liquid (PtL) flagship facility called Starling, a commercial-scale eSAF facility under development in Workington, Cumbria. This facility will convert low-carbon electricity, captured carbon dioxide and water into 25,000 tonnes/year of synthetic kerosene with a 97% lifecycle GHG emissions reduction versus fossil kerosene. This is enough to deliver over 40% of the UK's mandated 2030 eSAF supply.     Hydrogen Mobility at Speed with Jürgen Guldner, Head of Hydrogen Technology for the BMW Group

    The EAH team was happy to welcome Jürgen Guldner back on the show to give us an update on BMW’s hydrogen mobility program, which is…wait for it - ahead of schedule! In our first conversation, the focus was on the pilot fleet and after successful global testing, BMW has fast forwarded the road map. Instead of 2030, BMW will bring the iX5 Hydrogen into series production in 2028. Jürgen explains why BMW must meet the demands of different customers and therefore offer battery electric as well as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. He also explains the roadblocks that must be overcome for both product lines including infrastructure, grid technology and fuel production partnerships. About Jürgen Guldner: Jürgen is currently the General Program Manager of Hydrogen Technology for the BMW Group. He has spent 15 years working in the Munich area on hydrogen programs for BMW Group, 4 years in the US primarily launching the Hybrid X6, and began his career at BMW almost thirty years ago in different divisions. As one of the most successful green developers worldwide, we were curious to hear what he thought about hydrogen, his experience with ACWA/Neom in the past, his current involvement with Zhero and other companies utilizing clean hydrogen, as well as his vision for the future. Having built and operated a 400kg/day ammonia cracker to pure hydrogen demonstration plant - the world’s largest - since December 2023, AFC Energy launched the “HY5” in June 2025, a containerized version of its ammonia cracker capable of producing 500kg of 99.99% pure hydrogen per day on a "Fuel as a service" basis. In a joint development partnership with a major global industrial player, it is also developing larger-scale ammonia crackers based on its core technology for applications that include port-side pipeline-filling and hard-to-abate industrial sectors. Recent strategic partnerships include 50/50 joint ventures with Speedy Hire, the UK’s largest equipment rental company for fuel cell generators, and with Industrial Chemicals Ltd for the scaled production and distribution of low-cost hydrogen across the UK, utilizing ammonia sourced by ICL and AFC Energy’s ammonia cracking technology. In July 2025, AFC Energy completed an oversubscribed £27.5 million equity raise from institutional and retail investors on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange.     Acronyms for Good! with Kyle Arnold, Managing Director of HyHAUL Mobility

    This week on Everything About Hydrogen we have Kyle Arnold, the Managing Director of HyHAUL Mobility Ltd (HML). The company is leading the largest roll out of hydrogen Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) refueling infrastructure in the United Kingdom, operating along the M4 with 30 trucks by Q2 2026, supported by funding from the UK Department for Transport (DfT) Zero Emission Road Freight Transport (ZERFT). ZERFT has been subsequently rebranded as Zero Emissions HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrations (ZEHID). HML plans to eventually deploy over 300 fuel cell trucks totaling 44 tonnes of gross weight, by 2030. Kyle previously developed, built and operated hydrogen refuelling infrastructure across the UK and Europe, notably the Tyseley refuelling site in Birmingham, the largest in Europe. The CEM-Hubs initiative has nine Energy and Transport Ministries working together with leaders of the energy maritime value chain and key partner organisations. About Nelson Mojarro: Nelson specializes in international energy and innovation, advising shipowners and m port leaders on alternative fuels and innovation. He has over 15 years of experience in high-level international energy policy and diplomacy, technology & innovation investments, as well as decarbonization. In addition to CEM-Hubs, his work focuses on green acceleration, connecting green finance, data, innovation and energy for a net-zero world. As Representative of the Energy Sustainability Fund (£300M), based in Europe, Nelson led multi-million Euro international cooperation programs on clean energy innovation with the European Commission and the UK. He was a country delegate at COP21 in Paris and has participated in multiple COPs. He co-organised the COP28 Presidency CEO-Ministers meeting on energy and maritime in Dubai. Nelson was an Advisory Board member of the Initiative Partnering to Accelerate Sustainable Energy Innovation of the World Economic Forum (WEF), and Vice-Chair of the Committee for Energy Research and Technology (CERT) of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Nelson developed and coordinated the first government partnership on innovation with the Breakthrough Energy Coalition (BEC), a group of international investors led by Bill Gates, and initiated and launched the partnership between Mission Innovation, a multi-billion government initiative and the World Economic Forum (WEF) to advance clean energy innovation as well as business and government engagement. Nelson is a former OIES Saudi Aramco Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. He also holds an MA in Industry and Innovation Analysis and did his doctorate studies at The Science Policy Research Unit in Sussex, United Kingdom (SPRU). His research interests are related to technological change/innovation and energy transitions, particularly on the relationship between 'infrastructure change' and new 'green fuels'. He has published in academic journals about the use of biofuels in oil firms, such as BP, Shell, Petrobras and Pemex and was selected in 2013 as a Future Energy Fellow by Shell to write about Clean Energy for the Energy Collective.     Double Auctions, Double the Fun with H2Global Executive Director and Co-Chair Susana Moreira

    The EAH team had the pleasure of speaking with Susana Moreira about H2Global’s plans to transform how Europe buys green fuels. Susana Moreira is the Executive Director and Co-Chair of H2Global Stiftung. The H2Global Foundation is dedicated to fostering international cooperation and raising awareness about the H2Global mechanism and other market-based tools among governments worldwide to support their climate goals. It is also the body that has developed and now runs a unique double-sided auction mechanism, that aims to encourage global production of green fuels by providing long term certainty to project developers and allowing customers to purchase shorter term contracts, at prices that reflect market rates. In just three years, the H2Global instrument, implemented by Hintco, has mobilized over €5.86 billion from government sources to compensate for the price difference between supply and demand.
