Easy Riders Raging Podcast

Chris Johnston

Now in our fourth series, we're back and this time around we're talking 1980s films of all shapes and sizes. But not just that, we've got eps on 80s TV, and music videos and more! As ever our episodes include trademark features such as Recastarama (where we recast the film using current actors) and Who Am I (where we work out who we would be in the film). Lots of fun to be had. [Our 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s series are also available]

    113- Predator (1980s)

This week's episode is another one from our SpielbergPod archives, so it's a conversation between Paul and I on the John McTiernan film, 'Predator'. Listeners should note, this is a conversation from 2015 or 2016 and so, unsurprisingly, we make no reference to the films 'Prey' or 'Predator: Badlands' as those films were still many years away at the time (we don't even reference the awful Shane Black film 'The Predator' as this even predates that coming out).

65- The Graduate (1960s, DVD Commentary, Mike Nichols #3)

So this week we reached episode 400 and to celebrate this milestone I have returned us to the beginning of the show, to Mike Nichols' 'The Graduate' but not by rereleasing our 2017 conversation on the film, no no no no no, but instead by releasing my 2021 DVD commentary of the film- complete with nature audio backdrop I recorded myself in, I think, Richmond Park-, which I previously released over on the Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/ERRP).

    111- Trading Places (1980s, John Landis #6)

In this episode Kieran, Mark and I discuss the John Landis comedy 'Trading Places'. Outside discussing the film we find time to talk about a) which films were topping the box office in 1983 (they year this film was released, FYI), b) the state of comedy as a genre in recent years and c) the current cinematic landscape (up to and including 'The Odyssey' and 'The Invite'). Oh, and Mark gives us a wild recast and I forget what year it is. By 20 years.

    109- E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1980s, Steven Spielberg #11)

This week's recording goes all the way back to 2015 (!!!) to a conversation Kieran and I recorded in his home in South London over a cup of coffee about the Steven Spielberg film 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial' which we recorded for our sister podcast, the SpielbergPod.

107- Return of the Jedi: The Sarlacc Pit (1980s, One Perfect Scene, Star Wars #4)

This week- so this was early September 2025- Kieran, Paul and I fancied talking about 'Return of the Jedi' so we ended up doing a One Perfect Scene episode on the Sarlacc Pit sequence. Enjoy! This episode was originally released via my original podcast, the SpielbergPod, as part of it's ongoing Star Wars coverage.

    106- Flashdance (1980s)

In this episode we complete our 80s dance trilogy (!!!) with a discussion on 'Flashdance'. Along the way we find much to question about the film (including whether her dog was stoned), we ponder how we would fix the movie (including Marks suggestion of removing the pop music and dancing!), we talk nepo babies (including Kieran's thoughts on them) and we chat The Decline of Western Civilization (including the 1981 documentary of the same name).

    105- Footloose (1980s)

This week we continue our 80s dance trilogy of episodes (!!!) as Paul, Mark, Kieran and I discuss the film 'Footloose'. Along the way we discuss potato rated trauma, talk about the Michael Cimino version of this film, the 'fatness' of Fat Cowboy, a fictional Party of Five revival, the decline of NCP Car Parks and obviously, I make a food-based comparison to the film.

    104- Dirty Dancing (1980s)

In this episode Kieran, Mark and I kick off our 80s dance trilogy of episodes (!!!) with a conversation about iconic period drama, 'Dirty Dancing'. Expect references to watermelon, corners and having the time of your life.

102- Licence to Kill (1980s, James Bond #17)

Opinions differ and unlikely companion pieces are given this week as Paul, Mark, Kieran and I continue our James Bond coverage- and wrap up the tenure of Timothy Dalton- with a discussion on 'Licence to Kill'.

  • May 18 · 54 min

101- Never Say Never Again (1980s, James Bond #14)

This week Kieran, Mark and I pick back up with our Bond coverage by discussing the non-Eon James Bond film 'Never Say Never Again'. Now, eagle-eared listeners may note there is a 'technical issue' with the audio for the first two and a half minutes of this episode, but at that point it gets addressed....

    100- Raging Bull (1980s, Martin Scorsese #7)

In this, our 100th 1980s episode of Easy Riders Raging Podcast, I take the opportunity not just to break down what I think are the key aspects of the Martin Scorsese masterpiece 'Raging Bull' (it's autobiographic nature for the director, examination of brotherhood, etc.) but I also take the time to reflect on the history of the podcast.

    99- Local Hero (1980s)

This week on the podcast Kieran and I discuss Bill Forsyth's 'Local Hero', a film neither of us had seen before, and one which divided the two of us. Along the way we talk quirky vs irksome, Kieran savages 'Asteroid City' and raves about 'Bait', my punk rock youth (or lack thereof), and we compare this film to 'Kraven the Hunter'.

  • March 14 · 57 min

98- Once Upon a Time in America (1980s, Sergio Leone #4)

In this episode Kieran and I talk about Sergio Leone's gangster epic, 'Once Upon a Time in America'. A long old film giving us much to discuss, both positive and negative. (Expect comparisons to 'Goodfellas' and 'The Godfather' from the outset)

  • February 19 · 53 min

97- Amazing Stories: Ghost Train & The Mission (1980s, Steven Spielberg #13)

This week it's another return to the archives from my original podcast, the SpielbergPod, with an episode recorded back in back in 2021. It sees Kieran and I exploring the world of television directed by Steven Spielberg with a discussion on the two episodes of Amazing Stories that he directed: 'Ghost Train' and 'The Mission'.

    96- RoboCop (1980s)

This week Kieran, Paul and I tackle a solid gold classic from the 1980s. Yep, we're here to talk about Paul Verhoeven's satirical vision of the future of law enforcement. Part man. Part machine. All policeman. It's 1987's 'RoboCop'.
