DTVC Extra 34, The Superman Franchise, "Superman IV" and "Superman Returns"

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're finishing our look at the Superman pre-DCEU films with Superman IV and Superman Returns. For the first one, I look at the history of it, how Cannon and Golan-Globus came to get this film, and what went wrong with their approach. Then with Superman Returns I look at the period between IV and this film, how comic books changed, and how this didn't do as well as Batman Begins, and why. DTVC Podcast 175, "Deadly Prey"

Todd Liebenow from Forgotten Filmcast is back on, this time to discuss "Deadly Prey," the AIP classic. We look at the sillier aspects and the brutal aspects, and explore whether or not this film is more self-aware than it seems. I'm also reminded of a Little League teammate's older brother who tried to gross us out by eating worms; and we discuss whether or not New York Seltzer helped fund the film, or just gave the production beverages. DTVC Podcast 174, The Phillippe Phactory "Blowback" and "Due Justice"

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod. We're calling this episode The Phillippe Phactory, because we're featuring two poor man's Ryan Phillippes, Cam Gigandet and Kellan Lutz. First we're looking at Gigandet in "Blowback," which also stars Randy Couture. Then with Lutz we look at "Due Justice," which also stars Jeff Fahey and Pedro from "Napoleon Dynamite." Finally, in our Spotlight on a Fight, we looked at Seagal in "Under Siege 2," plus we added a new feature where we look at slang terms the kids use. "DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Superman pre-DCEU films with Superman III and Supergirl. For the first one, I look at what went wrong here, and what parts of it I enjoyed in spite of itself. Then with Supergirl I look at areas where this film was a first in the comic book genre, but again what went wrong. DTVC Podcast 172, "Flight of Fury"

Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time 2007's "Flight of Fury," which was a rip-off of Dudikoff's "Black Thunder." As always, we look at the good, the bad, and the problematic--and as is often the case, the latter two are much better represented. Scott also gives us some background on the UK actors who made the trip to Romania to act opposite Seagal's stunt double, and the volume of padding in the film takes us on a tangent about American football. You can find Scott's podcasts on iTunes or other major podcatchers; or go here for All 90s Action, All the Time, https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/scott-murphy9, and here for New Horror Express, https://newhorrorexpress.com/ For my newest novel release, Don's House in the Mountains, go here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CN9B811D Check out Bainbridge, a short action novel about a cop on the edge in early 90s LA: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CH7V3SK5 For my author website, go here: https://www.matthewpoirierauthor.com And you can grab our DTVC merch at our Threadless, https://dtvconnoisseur.threadless.com

DTVC Extra 32, The Superman Franchise, "Superman" and "Superman II"

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Superman pre-DCEU films with Superman and Superman II. For the first one, I look at how this might be the best comic book film ever, and why it deserves that title. For part two, I look at both the "Lester cut" and the Donner cut, which one I prefer, and areas where I felt this one could've been better, regardless of whose cut it was. Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod. First we look at a "Final Kill" from the director of "Most Dangerous Game," which has a dash of Billy Zane and a smidge of Johnny Messner. Second, we look at "Bloodline Killer," a thriller with a baddie unironically called "Skulleton." Finally, in our Spotlight on a Fight, we looked at John Cusack and Benny "The Jet" Urquidez "Grosse Pointe Blank." DTVC Extra 31, "Deadpool & Wolverine"

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I'm doing a one-off look at "Deadpool & Wolverine." I start with the context of how we got to this film, going back to Deadpool's first appearance in 1990, how he grew from villain to anti-hero, and the history of attempts at adaptations before we finally got it in 2016. From there I get into the movie, looking at what worked, and why it worked. Finally, I finish with a look at where Marvel is now, and how this film fits with the recent announcement that RDJ will be playing Dr. Doom. DTVC Podcast 170, "Equalizer 2000"

In this episode I'm joined once again by Will from Exploding Helicopter, this time to look at the Cirio H. Santiago post-apocalyptic flick "Equalizer 2000," starring Richard Norton. We get into the hallmarks of the post-apocalyptic film overall, how Italian directors and Cirio H. Santiago tried to mine Mad Max's success, plus go on a tangent about the differences in American and European sports. In addition, my opening thought extols the virtues of the morning matinee, and I give some theories on why theater-goers are so bad now. In this episode I'm joined by Freddie Young from Full Moon Reviews as we discuss the Cynthia Rothrock/Godfrey Ho classic, "Undefeatable." We get into Ho as a director, and his technique of putting unrelated movies together with newly shot footage to create myriad films. And then with the movie, we look at all the craziness happening, yet how it all works in spite of the craziness. DTVC Extra 27, The Star Trek Franchise, "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Star Trek original cast franchise with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." With the first film, I open with a short history of the blockbuster at that time, starting with "Jaws" in '75, and how Star Trek fit into that. I also get into the idea that the odd-numbered films are bad and the even-numbered ones good, and whether or not that holds up with part III. With the second film, I talk about how it wasn't originally one of my favorites, but how this viewing I really enjoyed it; I also look at how "End Game" follows some of its premise, and chat a little bit about the Challenger explosion that happened the same year this film was released.
