Canadian Creepies Crossover: The Great Amherst Mystery
Content note: This episode discusses an attempted sexual assault and poltergeist activity. This week we are revisiting a segment from our Tuesday show over on the Canadian Creepies podcast. Every Tuesday we take a deep dive into a paranormal or totally creepy Canadian mystery. In Amherst, Nova Scotia, in 1878, 18-year-old Esther Cox lived with her sister Olive Teed, Olive's husband Daniel, and their two young children, in a small house on Princess Street. After a frightening attack in late August 1878, knocking and banging began in the house at night, and objects began to move, fires began to start without a clear cause, and messages appeared on the walls, including one that read, Esther Cox, you are mine to kill. Voices answered questions by knocking, and named themselves Bob Nickle and others, while neighbours, doctors, and clergy came to watch. Actor Walter Hubbell arrived in 1879 determined to expose a trick, stayed with the family for months, and later wrote The Great Amherst Mystery. Skeptical investigators later argued that Esther herself, in a dissociative state, could have produced the events, while other witnesses said they saw things they could not explain.
