What If We Didn't Have to Earn Our Right to Exist? Rethinking Work, Worth, and What Human Beings Are Here to Do
What if our obsession with working hard is about more than productivity? In this episode, I follow an unexpected reaction to the cultural celebration of "working hard" into a deeper question about what we've been taught to believe about being human. Why do we equate effort with worth? Why do we feel we have to earn a living, prove ourselves, produce, achieve, and continually optimize our lives? I share the surprising story of how my consulting practice, alinea, emerged after I lost what I thought was my dream job. I didn't have a business plan or a five-year goal. I couldn't even get a conventional job interview. Instead, I followed what appeared in front of me, responded to opportunities, and eventually built a thriving consulting practice. Looking back, I see something I didn't have language for at the time: responsive emergence. There is a difference between working hard from fear and necessity and responding with energy, curiosity, and discernment to what is actually emerging. I also reflect on an experience at a community foundation that made me question what we mean by calling something a "result." What if the purpose of work, money, technology, and economic systems isn't simply more production and growth? What if meaningful results include consciousness, relationship, creativity, meaning, and human flourishing? And finally, I ask a much bigger question: What might human beings become capable of when we no longer organize our lives around proving that we deserve to be here? This is an exploration of work, worth, emergence, and the possibility of a different way of being human.
