Primal Force #1 with Ian Anderson
On this episode Matt and rookie Leyman Ian Anderson prepare to recite an awkwardly long oath by discussing 1994's PRIMAL FORCE #1. That's right folks, the issue by issue coverage of PRIMAL FORCE begins here! Well, technically it began with the PRIMAL FORCE #0 episode, but now it's official. Matt and Ian will be talking about the entire run of PRIMAL FORCE. Issue by issue. Or at least that's the plan until Ian forsakes the Leymen's oath, throws his medallion in the nearest pool, and walks away from the show. Night Thrasher #1 with Corey Blake
On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Corey Blake try to avoid getting their butts kicked as they discuss the kick butt 1993 kick butt comic NIGHT THRASHER #1 (starring the kick butt Night Thrasher who does indeed kick butt). At one point Night Thrasher was the kick butt leader of the New Warriors, a truly kick butt team, but now he's a kick butt solo character. The question is, does Night Thrasher work as a solo character or does he shine brighter as part of a kick butt ensemble? Matt isn't sure of the answer, mainly because he's unfamiliar with anything kick butt. But(t) rest assured, Corey does have all of the kick butt answers to all of the kick butt questions! Along the way, Matt struggles with the differences between metaphorically and literally killing someone, talks at length about the kick butt band Foreigner, and wonders if Night Thrasher is a vampire. Reign of the Supermen Part 1 with David Walton and Glitch
On this episode Matt and special guest co-hosts David Walton and Glitch meet four super cool dudes (of which not a single one of them is totally evil) who are calling dibs on the name Superman as they discuss 1993's ACTION COMICS #687, SUPERMAN #78, THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #501, and SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL #22. That's right, the long promised discussion of the REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN finally begins here! The guys kick things off by tackling the most pressing issue of all, deciding which of the replacement Supermen is their personal favorite. Then things turn in a very DOES THIS COME IN CHROMIUM direction as David reveals that he's STILL worried that he killed Superman with his indifference, Matt is STILL waiting for the four replacement Supermen to Voltron into the one true Superman, and Glitch STILL hates Jeb Friedman with a fiery passion. Batman Vs. the Incredible Hulk with Bryan Q. Miller
On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Bryan Q. Miller (writer of BATGIRL, SMALLVILLE, HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE) try their best to not breathe in the congealed air while discussing 1981's BATMAN VS. THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Both Matt and Bryan spent time working at Borders Books (RIP) so their conversation begins by talking extensively about BINC stickers and the prominent role they played in their lives. It's a trip down memory lane that doubles as a therapeutic exorcism of some bad memories for Matt. More importantly, Bryan talks about how he went from working at Borders to writing for SMALLVILLE and the BATGIRL series starring Stephanie Brown (which, most importantly to Matt, is his second favorite series of all time). Then it's time to talk about the two Bruces. One becomes a bat(man) while the other becomes some sort of hulk(ing monster). You've probably heard of them before. They fight. They team-up. The Joker's there too, along with the Shaper of Worlds. That part's kind of bizarre - but in a good way. Vertigo Visions: Doctor Occult with Matthew Dow Smith
On this episode Matt and special guest co-Doctor Occult superfan Matthew Dow Smith (writer/artist of AMELIA SHADOWS, THE OCTOBER GIRL) try to determine if "pleasure can really be such amusing gallows" (WTF?) by discussing 1994's VERTIGO VISIONS: DOCTOR OCCULT. If you like extremely deep dives on characters most people haven't even heard of it (and face it, if you're listening to this show - you do) then this episode is truly for you! Both Matt and Matthew are outspoken Doctor Occult fans, but interestingly, their love is each rooted in a different aspect of the character. Although, a bit of a spoiler alert here: the Doctor Occult they love is NOT present in this Vertigo Visions one-shot. BUT the fact that this is a wildly different take on the character does make for a great conversation. Along the way Matt gives Matthew a great idea for a story, but when he asks to have a character named after him he gets turned down for the most Matt reason of all time (and it's not because he talks about Night Man all of the time). Doom 2099 #1 with Stacy from The Fanboy Power Hour
On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Stacy (THE FANBOY POWER HOUR PODCAST) wake up in the far off future and instead of figuring out how to survive they decide to talk about 1993's DOOM 2099 #1. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better pitchman for DOOM 2009 than Stacy, whereas Matt is still upset at the series because he feels like it called him an idiot at a young age. So while Matt spends most of this episode trying to heal from that perceived slight, Stacy brings some genuinely insightful thoughts about the sliding scale of good and evil and how in a future world driven by hyper-capitalism it is entirely conceivable that a supervillain despot from the past might very well turn out to be the hero we need. Also, Stacy says Doctor Doom (along with some rando named Shakespeare) owns the copyright on the monologue, while Matt flings himself down a rabbit hole talking about Marvel's short lived Frontier Comics line. On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Dave Amiott (host of JUST THE FACTS...AND MORE!: A DRAGNET PODCAST) try to rent a VHS copy of James Cameron's Spider-Man movie while discussing 1995's GREEN GOBLIN #1. Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1998 with A. Lee Martinez and David Walton

Blindside #1 with Glitch
On this episode Matt and returning special guest co-host Glitch get blindsided by their discussion of 1996's BLINDSIDE #1. Before talking about the character of Blindside, Matt attempts to blindside Glitch with the history of the most bizarre television show he's ever seen. Proving himself prepared for Matt's nonsense, Glitch not only knows the show but adds an entirely new level of weirdness to the story. What is the show you ask? You'll just have to listen to the episode to find out. Hint: it has a dog in it. After the tv talk is over, Matt and Glitch get down to business and talk about Blindside. Is he Daredevil? No, but not entirely no. Is he The Matrix? No, but kind of yes. Does he look good in a hospital gown? Most assuredly yes. Then Matt and Glitch are blindsided by the sudden appearance of listener favorite David Walton as he joins the conversation that has sort of been about this character named Blindside. But it's also about Poland's version of Captain America who has a mermaid for a sidekick. There's probably some Night Man talk as well. Devil Dinosaur Spring Fling with A. Lee Martinez
On this episode Matt and returning special guest co-Night Man enthusiast A. Lee Martinez (author of THE AUTOMATIC DETECTIVE, THE LAST ADVENTURE OF CONSTANCE VERITY, and the upcoming UNBEARABLE) befriend one another after being exiled for preaching the forbidden word of 1997's DEVIL DINOSAUR SPRING FLING. So, as it turns out Lee is a huge fan of Devil Dinosaur and as it also turns out, this random one-shot from 1997 exists. Seeing an opportunity to once again talk to his favorite author while not straying out of the 90's safe space that this show inhabits, Matt eagerly brought Lee back on. Here's the thing: Matt has no idea what in the world(s) a Devil Dinosaur is (and don't even get him started on Moon-Boy). Until this apparent "spring fling", Matt had never read a comic featuring Devil Dinosaur. So with a lot that he needed to learn ahead... ...Matt promptly makes Lee spend roughly the first 30ish minutes of the show diving deep on nerdy talk about writing processes, the too high premium put on "original stories" (spoiler alert: there really are none), and what a writer's relationship to their own ideas should be. X-Men 2099 #1 with Mat Elfring
On this episode Matt and special guest co-host from the futurrrrrrre (insert echo effect here) Mat Elfring (communications manager at Oni Press) try not to reveal which Mat(t) is the secret villain as they discuss 1993's X-MEN 2099 #1. Before the 2099 of it all, Matt and Mat spend some time heaping much deserved praise on another Matt. In this case it's writer/artist Matt Kindt and his incredible new comic of MIND MGMT: NEW & IMPROVED (from Oni - issue one is available NOW and IT HAS A CHROMIUM COVER)! Then we're off to the year 2099 where things are...different...sort of. There's a Spider-Man swinging around. A Doom has some political schemes. A Hulk is likely rampaging about. A Punisher is punishering. A Ghost Rider will eventually be ghost ridering. You get it. And now there's an X-MEN! (At least, there is the start of an X-MEN). Nightmares on Elm Street #1 with Bobby Trippett
On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Bobby Trippett (from the GRINDBIN PODCAST) have been where the river ran and avoided drownin' in a sunless sea in order to discuss 1991's NIGHTMARES ON ELM STREET #1. Is this episode about the man of our dreams Freddy Krueger? Yes it is. Eventually. First Matt gets very personal and tells the story of when he first met his wife and why the date June 13th holds a special place in his heart. It's a sweet story that has all of the necessary ingredients (a Pinky and the Brain t-shirt, the somewhat remembered Ivan Reitman movie SIX DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS, the band Stabbing Westward, a weekend pass to Wizard World Chicago 1998, and HALLOWEEN H20) to create a love that lasts a lifetime. But then it's time to do the Freddy -- and there is no better person than Bobby to do the Freddy. That's not an innuendo. It's a fact. Bobby's a true Fredhead, a Dream Warrior, possibly even a Dream Master and he expertly navigates us through this rather insane comic. The Night Man vs. Wolverine #0 with A. Lee Martinez
On this episode Matt and special guest co-host A. Lee Martinez (author of MONSTER, CHASING THE MOON, GIL'S ALL FRIGHT DINER, and more!) get trapped in a Murderworld/sewer/abandoned funhouse and decide that the only way out is to talk about 1995's THE NIGHT MAN VS. WOLVERINE #0. Yes, your eyes and ears are not deceiving you, Night Man (or, "The Night Man" as he's apparently called - Matt refuses to accept this because he's always known Johnny Domino as Nightman) is actually here and he's (inexplicably) brought Wolverine with him! Wildthing #1 with Ian Anderson
On this episode Matt and returning special guest co-host Ian Anderson flunk out of Arcade Officer Academy for not knowing how to handle a "hot program" - which is something they would've learned if they weren't too busy talking about 1993's WILDTHING #1. Who is Nikki Doyle? Is she the titular Wildthing? The New Guardians #1 with Daniel G. Wilson
On this super-sized episode Matt and special guest co-host Daniel G. Wilson try to figure out what the heck those little blue guys on Oa were thinking as they discuss 1988's THE NEW GUARDIANS #1. Do you like comics that use racial and cultural stereotypes as superpowers? Well, then you are in luck... ...Matt, on the other hand, clumsily tries to navigate the landmines he set for himself because he's the one who chose the comic. Ever the good sport, Daniel brings a high level of thoughtfulness, nuance, and sophistication to the discussion -- which are all things The New Guardians #1 lacks. Matt's awkwardness aside, this turns out to be a great conversation about race and representation in comics. Also, both Daniel and Matt share their love for the writing of the great Dwayne McDuffie. Hopefully Matt didn't mention Nightman (but knowing him, he probably did). The Comet #1 and Legend of the Shield #1 with Pat Casey
On this episode Matt and returning guest co-host Pat Casey (screenwriter of VIOLENT NIGHT 1 & 2) strive to make an impression as they discuss the consequence of the launch of the Impact Universe with 1991's THE COMET #1 and LEGEND OF THE SHIELD #1. (Matt tried to use synonyms of "impact" and it made him sound like AI. Never one to miss an opportunity to take the wrong lesson from something, Matt is now suspicious of synonyms) Both Pat and Matt have a lot of fondness for the Impact Universe, although Pat admits that his first encounter with it was less than pleasant. Matt tries his darndest to stay on topic, but ends up rambling about weird Golden Age patriotic superheroes for a while. While Matt probably doesn't bring up Nightman, Pat does share a few non-spoiler details about the upcoming VIOLENT NIGHT 2 in theaters December 4, 2026!
