Difference Between Narcissism and Attachment Styles

You try to tell your partner that something they did hurt you, but somehow the conversation turns into an argument about your tone, your memory, or why you’re making such a big deal out of it. And before you know it, you’re the one apologizing, even though you were the one who was upset in the first place. So is this narcissism, or could it have something to do with their attachment style? Some people have a hard time admitting they’re wrong and would rather blame you than take responsibility. Others become uncomfortable with criticism and shut down, while some become so afraid that you’re going to leave them that you end up reassuring them instead of talking about what hurt you. In this episode, we’re looking at narcissistic traits, dismissive-avoidant, fearful-avoidant, anxious, and secure attachment, and how people with these patterns may respond when you bring up a problem. We’ll also talk about the difference between defensiveness and gaslighting, because not everyone who disagrees with you or remembers something differently is trying to manipulate you. And, understanding why someone behaves this way is helpful, but what we are looking for is if they can listen, take responsibility, and make an effort to change. Because even in healthy relationships, people get defensive and make mistakes. You just want to be with someone who cares enough to work through those moments with you, instead of leaving you feeling that everything is always your fault.
