How Do You Know When a Powerful Country Is Actually Weak?

Russia has nuclear weapons, a massive military, a powerful security state, and a leader who has controlled the country for decades. But does that make Russia strong? In this video, I use leadership theory and recent examples from inside Russia to explain the difference between power and strength. A genuinely strong leader can receive bad news, tolerate criticism, change course, and allow institutions to function without constant fear or coercion. A weak leader may still possess enormous power—but must silence opponents, filter information, manufacture loyalty, exaggerate success, and punish anyone who challenges the official story. A country can be dangerous, heavily armed, and capable of inflicting enormous damage while still being institutionally weak. The real question is not whether Putin has power. The real question is whether Putin—and the system he built—can survive truth, criticism, failure, and change.
