Summary
Denmark sits at the northern edge of European viticulture, between 55 and 58 degrees north, in a country of more than 400 islands where you are never further than 50 kilometres from the sea. It is a small region, around 180 hectares in total, but a fast-growing one, and it produces wine unlike almost anywhere else: high in acidity, precise in its fruit, and shaped by cool summers and days that run to 17 or 18 hours of light.In this masterclass, recorded at the Cool Climate Wine Summit in Warsaw, Danish winemaker Lou Langdon walks through five wines from across the country, from the cool north to a small, unusually warm southern island where olives, figs and almonds grow alongside the vines.
Along the way she covers what makes the region distinctive: a maritime climate that keeps winters mild and summers cool, more than half of all Danish vineyards farmed organically, and a wine culture young enough to have no fixed rules, which has left producers free to experiment with orange wines, spontaneous ferments, barrel-aged Solaris and partial malolactic.
She also explains why Denmark's high production costs push growers toward the top of the quality ladder, and how the country's Michelin-heavy restaurant scene is pulling the whole industry upward.The five wines span sparkling, orange, barrel-aged and off-dry styles, drawn largely from Solaris and Muscaris, the disease-resistant varieties that ripen reliably this far north. Denmark's first protected designation of origin, Dons, features early on.
