In this episode, Darren and Christina reveal six principles wealthy families use to build, protect and pass down their wealth. They explain why liquidity can be more valuable than a slightly higher return, why taxes must be considered before every major financial decision and why wealthy families build coordinated financial systems instead of collecting disconnected products. Canada's Real Tax Burden: The Shocking Cost of Being Canadian

Groceries. Clothing. Canadians are watching the cost of nearly everything climb—but none of those may be the biggest expense destroying your wealth. According to the Fraser Institute's Canadian Consumer Tax Index 2026, the average Canadian family earned approximately $121,000 in 2025 and paid nearly $51,000 in total taxes. That means roughly 42% of its income went toward taxes—more than food, shelter and clothing combined. In this episode, Darren and Christina break down the taxes Canadians see, the taxes hiding in the cost of everyday life and the future taxes being created through government deficits. They also compare the Canadian and American tax systems, examine why highly skilled workers, entrepreneurs and investment capital are leaving Canada, and explain how tax rules can severely limit the wealth-building ability of Canadian business owners and real estate investors. Most importantly, they discuss what Canadians can actually control—and how properly structured high-cash-value life insurance may help reduce taxation on the growth, access and eventual transfer of their wealth. Tax the Rich? Canada's Top Earners Already Pay More Than You Think

Do high-income Canadians actually pay their fair share of taxes? It is one of the most emotionally charged arguments in Canadian politics. But before Canadians decide who should pay more, we need to understand who is already paying what. In this episode, Darren and Christina examine Canada's progressive tax system, including new data showing that the top 20% of income-earning families pay 65.3% of the country's personal income taxes. They also explore what happens when higher tax rates influence investment, entrepreneurship, hiring and the movement of capital and skilled professionals. This is not simply a debate about defending wealthy Canadians. It is a conversation about the kind of tax system that produces the most opportunity, prosperity and revenue for Canada. How Seaweed Helped Build a Skincare Business in Rural Newfoundland | The Story of 7 Fathoms Seaweed Skin Care

Courtney and Terrence Howell didn't move to rural Newfoundland because it was the easiest place to build a business. They moved there because it was where they wanted to build their life. After meeting while teaching English in South Korea, the couple eventually settled in Grates Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador. With backgrounds in anthropology and fine arts, they launched an art and tourism business before transforming an old school into a Cajun-Creole fusion restaurant. Then a walk along the beach changed everything. Terrence, who has lived with Crohn's disease for most of his life, was dealing with serious irritation around his medical appliance. After handling a piece of local seaweed and noticing an unexpected change in his skin, he and Courtney began exploring how its naturally occurring bioactive compounds could be extracted and preserved. That discovery eventually became 7 Fathoms Seaweed Skin Care. In this Entrepreneurial Spotlight, Courtney and Terrence join Darren to discuss building a business in rural Newfoundland, finding their earliest customers, working with scientific researchers, sustainably harvesting seaweed, appearing on Dragons' Den and preparing 7 Fathoms for its next stage of growth. Canada's $50 Billion EV Gamble: What Happens Now?

Check out our webinar for business owners: https://hub.controlandcompound.com/business-masterclass-webinar-replay Canada set out to become an electric vehicle superpower. Governments backed the strategy with up to $52.5 billion in support, automakers announced massive projects, and the expectation was that jobs, exports and an entirely new Canadian supply chain would follow. Since then, demand has fallen short of early projections, trade tensions have changed the market and some of the country's biggest EV projects have been paused or suspended. In this episode of Control and Compound, Darren and Christina break down the economic and environmental arguments behind Canada's EV strategy, the assumptions the plan depended on, what happened to Honda's proposed $15 billion Ontario EV supply chain, and why Canada is now allowing up to 49,000 Chinese EVs into the country annually. Was the vision wrong, or did the government try to force the future before consumers and the market were ready? Darren also explains why this story is about much more than cars; it's about who carries the risk when governments make massive industrial bets with taxpayer money. Your Business Is Growing… So Why Are You More Stressed?

https://hub.controlandcompound.com/business-masterclass-webinar-replay Many entrepreneurs start their business believing success will eventually create freedom. But for a lot of business owners, the opposite happens. The business grows, revenue increases, the team expands… but so do the stress, responsibility, payroll, decisions, overhead, and financial pressure. In this episode, Darren and Christina break down why successful entrepreneurs can still feel trapped inside the business they built. They discuss the stages of entrepreneurship, how business owners become the bottleneck, why revenue alone does not create freedom, and how systems, delegation, liquidity, and long-term planning can help create true financial and operational freedom. They also explain why many entrepreneurs are asset rich but liquidity poor, and how strategies like corporate-owned high cash value life insurance can help business owners build stability, flexibility, retirement options, and estate planning benefits outside of the operating company. If you are a business owner who has built something successful but still feels overwhelmed, this episode is for you.
