    SEC Scouting Report: South Carolina

South Carolina women's basketball is loaded heading into the 2026-27 season — but are the Gamecocks the team to beat in the SEC and the country? In this South Carolina scouting report, we take a closer look at Dawn Staley's roster, including superstar Joyce Edwards, potential X-factor Agot Makeer, Tessa Johnson, Ashlyn Watkins, Chloe Kitts and one of the most talented freshman classes in the country. We break down South Carolina's strengths, biggest questions, ceiling, floor and my bold prediction for the Gamecocks heading into the 2026-27 women's college basketball season. And there's one freshman I didn't get to in the video: Justine Loubens, a 6-foot-1 guard from France. Loubens joins South Carolina after playing professionally for La Roche Vendée Basket Club. She gives Dawn Staley another intriguing perimeter piece, particularly as a shooter, and could be a longer-term development piece on an incredibly deep roster. With a loaded returning roster, an elite 2026 recruiting class and another international addition in Loubens, South Carolina has the talent to make a serious run at another SEC championship and national championship. 🏀 Topics covered: • South Carolina women's basketball 2026-27 roster • Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks • Agot Makeer — the X-factor • South Carolina's freshman recruiting class • SEC women's basketball• South Carolina's ceiling and floor • My bold prediction for the Gamecocks • Can South Carolina win the national championship? Two-time NCAA champion and former Tennessee Lady Vol Alberta “Bird” Auguste joins Chalk Talk South: Women’s Hoops for a conversation that Lady Vol fans won’t want to miss! 🧡🏀 Bird takes us behind the scenes of her time playing for legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, including what it was really like inside the Tennessee Lady Vols program and what it took to win back-to-back national championships in 2007 and 2008. Bird also shares stories about Pat Summitt’s coaching and leadership, the growth of women’s basketball, how the game has evolved since her playing days, and what she thinks about today’s college basketball landscape. And Bird’s story didn’t end when basketball did. She also opens up about her transition into law enforcement with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), her work serving the Nashville community, and how the lessons she learned as a Lady Vol continue to shape her life today. Is College Basketball Running Out of Room for Freshmen?

UCLA head coach Cori Close recently shared some thought-provoking comments on Women's Sports Now about the growing impact of the transfer portal and NIL on college basketball recruiting. As someone who spent 15 seasons building UCLA into a national championship program, Close offers a unique perspective on how roster construction is changing across women's college basketball. In this video, I break down Close's comparison between recruiting high school freshmen and recruiting players out of the transfer portal. We discuss why coaches increasingly view transfers as a safer investment, how NIL and the portal are affecting opportunities for high school recruits, and what these changes could mean for the future of women's basketball. Topics discussed: • Cori Close's comments on Women's Sports Now • Transfer portal vs. freshman recruiting • NIL's impact on roster building • Why coaches are leaning toward transfers • The risks and rewards of recruiting high school prospects • Women's college basketball recruiting trends • SEC and Power 4 roster construction • The future of player development in college basketball Do you agree with Cori Close? Is the transfer portal creating fewer opportunities for freshmen, or is it simply the new reality of college athletics? Let me know your thoughts in the comments. #WomensBasketball #CollegeBasketball #CoriClose #UCLA #TransferPortal #NIL #WBB #NCAAW #Recruiting #WomensSports
