Here's what's on the workbench today: 1) Do your wipers suck? If you can't see clearly, you can't drive safely. Check those bleades before winter weather turns your windshield into a visibility nightmare. 2) How are your fluids doing really? Coolant, oil and other vital fluids deserve attention before the cold asrrives. Winter will expose weaknesses you didn't know you had. 3) Does your vehicle have an external fuel filter? If it does, find out what your manufacturers maintenance schedule says. Don't assume every vehicle has a serviceable external filter. 4) What's in your washer -fluid jug? Minus 40℃? Do Shocks Really Matter? The Key to Tire Contact, Stability & Control
Shocks and Struts aren't there just for comfort-they have a critical job to do. In today's Suspension & Steering: One Nugget at a Time, Motormouth breaks down what shocks and struts actually do and why they're so important to vehicle stability and control. Whether your vehicle has MacPherson Struts, conventional shocks and coil springs, coil-over assemblies, or a combination of suspension designs, the principle is the same: the suspension has to control the movement of the vehicle while keeping the tires properly planted on the road. When shocks or struts are worn, the suspension can continue bouncing and oscillating instead of settling down. That can reduce tire contact, compromise braking and steering response, increase body movement, and make an emergency left-right maneuver much harder to control. It's not about making your ride feel softy or comfortable. It's about controlling the suspension so the tires can do their job. And when you suddenly have to avoid something in the road, that tire contact can be the difference between maintaining control and finding yourself in a sideways skid-and heading for the rhubarb. Time to Beat the Drum! Drum Brake Service, Maintenance & Repairs
Time to beat the drum, friends🥁 Drum brakes may be simple in design, but they can get complicated when maintenance gets ignored. And yes- there are still plenty of vehicles on the road using rear drum brakes, either on their own or as part of a disc/drum braking system. NOTE: drum brakes require a manual adjustment performed by your auto service technician. Today we're talking about drum barake service, maintenance and repairs, including why rear drum brakes need proper adjustment and why your parking brake/emergency brake needs to be used regularly. One important lesson from the shop and the classroom: drum brakes don't magically maintain themselves. That technician still has an important job to do. Parking Brake Debrief: Your Rear Brakes Are There for a Reason
Your parking brake isn't just there for parking - and your rear brakes aren't supposed to sit around looking pretty. In today's Parking Brake Debrief, Motormouth takes another run at the subject because sometimes we're listening to the words but we're not actually hearing the message. The parking brake needs to work, and it needs to be used. More importantly, the rear brakes need to be serviced so they can actually do their share of the braking. When the rear brakes aren't working properly, the front brakes end up carrying far more of the load than they were designed to handle. That means increased front -brake wear, more heat, overheated rotors, brake pulsation and, ultimately, more money coming out of your pocket. And here's the part that gets misunderstood: servicing the rear brakes doesn't automatically mean doing another brake job. Sometimes it means taking the calipers off, removing and cleaning the slide pins, cleaning and lubricating the hardware, removing the pads, cleaning the pad saddles and putting everything back together so the brakes can actually move feely and do their job. Skippy got a perfect real-world reaction when she explained this to her brother- in- law: "You're listening, but you're not hearing." Once he understood what was actually involved, his response was simple: "Oh, I didn't know that's what you meant." That's exactly why we're doing this debrief. Parking Brakes: Why You Should Use Them Every Time
Is your parking brake just there for emergencies? Nope. And that little "P" on the automatic transmission isn't a substitute for using it. Today we're putting the parking brake myth to bed and explaining why use your parking brake every time you park is an important part of proper vehicle operation. We look at what actually holds the vehicle when it's in Park, why you don't want the entire weight of the vehicle -whether you're parked uphill or downhill-and how using the parking brake properly helps transfer that load where it belongs. There's another important piece to this : the rear brakes> On many vehicles, regularly applying the parking brake helps keep the rear parking - brake mechanism operating properly. Neglect it long enough and you can end up with rear brake components that aren't doing their share of the work, while the front brakes take more of the beating. That can mean premature front - brake wear - and another repair bill that could have been avoided with a simple habit. So, gentlemen and ladies, when somebody says, "Honey, It's an automatic. we don't need the parking brake," we're going to respectfully dismantle that myth. Calipers Matter -The Brake Component You Can't Ignore
Brake calipers matter - and their condition can make the difference between a properly functioning brake system and one that creates problems down the road. This morning , Motormouth takes a close look at brake calipers: what they do, what needs to be inspected, what tells us a caliper can be cleaned, serviced and reused, and the warning signs that mean it's time to replace it. A caliper may look perfectly fine from the outside while problems are developing where you can't see them. We'll talk about corrosion, piston operation, slides, mounting surfaces and the things that need to be checked before simply putting an old caliper back into service. Brake System Pressure Differential Valve - Another Critical Component You Need to Understand
Your brake system is far more than pads, rotors, and calipers. Today we're continuing our look at the hydraulic side of the braking system, focusing on the pressure differential valve and the critical job it performs when you put your foot on the brake pedal. We're talking about how hydraulic pressure is distributed through the system, why the rear brakes need to begin doing their job as the vehicle's weight transfers forward, and what can happen when that system doesn't operate properly. And we're also talking about something the "maintenance - free" crowd doesn't always want to discuss: brake fluid doesn't last forever. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. Years of heating and cooling can contaminate the fluid and contribute to corrosion and problems throughout the hydraulic system. That's why I recommend flushing the brake system every 24 months rather than believing in some mysterious "lifetime" fluid. We've covered the brake booster, master cylinder, brake lines and hydraulic components, and we're still working our way toward the mechanical side of the system. The bottom line hasn't changed: That vehicle is your money. You bought it. Now take charge of maintaining it. Because if you can't stop or steer it, let me tell you something - nothing else is going to matter.
