    The Oppression Wheel

    On this episode, your hosts welcome their first guest, Brie Birdsell. Brie is a rural advocate and leader in disability, queer and human rights in Canada and is also the founder of the Deep River Queer Connection, fostering community and allyship for 2sLGBTQIA residents in the town of Deep River, and a founder of the CanDO society, a non-profit focused on making the Canadian outdoors accessible for all. The Wheel of Oppression aka the wheel of power and privilege is a conceptual tool that helps humans understand how different forms of oppression intersect and perpetuate systemic marginalization. The hub of the wheel represents the systems of power and privilege that perpetuate these forms of oppression. Marginalization occurs when individuals experience oppression in multiple ways due to the intersections of these variables, and each one moves them outwards, away from power.     The Global Majority

    In this episode, Jamie and Jenna discuss the term Global Majority and the rationale behind its utilization in our anti-capitalism efforts. According to Wikipedia, the term 'global majority' refers to ethnic groups that constitute approximately 85 percent of the global population. It has been used as an alternative to terms which are seen as racialized like "ethnic minority" and "person of colour" (POC), or more regional terms like "visible minority" in Canada and "Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic" (BAME) in the United Kingdom. The term was first used in 2003 as a way to challenge the Eurocentric perspective. The term was again brought forward by Rosemary Campbell-Stephens, a black woman of African Caribbean descent and heritage, specifically, Jamaican parentage and educator in the UK, who wrote in her paper, Global Majority; Decolonizing the language and Reframing the Conversation about Race.     Truth and Reconciliation

    Welcome to the first episode of Capital/isms! With this inaugural episode launching on Sept 29th, 2023 - a day before Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Canada's relationship with Indigenous peoples is a complex and deeply rooted issue with a long history of injustices. It is important to recognize that there is a wide diversity of Indigenous cultures and nations across Canada, each with its own unique history and experiences. But today we will do our best to explain some of the things we learned as adults about Canada’s relationship with Indigenous people and how we got to where we are today - and really why understanding how we got here actively engaging in reconciliation is so important.
