    Who Is the Women’s GOAT? The Malverns Classic & More

    We wrap up the summer with Dr. J and cover a lot of ground. We start with some post Worlds talk from the UCI BMX World Championships in Australia, including new Elite Men’s World Champion Jesse Asmus. Can he back up the title, become a major player moving forward, and maybe even win another World Championship? We give our thoughts. We also get into the Malverns Classic, the new USA BMX schedule, and imagine what riders like Gary Ellis, Charles Townsend, Matt Pohlkamp, Dr. J, and Pistol Pete would look like racing today with slammed seats and modern setups. There’s plenty of bench racing too, including some of the fastest women to ever race BMX and a few potential GOAT names that newer racers may not know as well, but who had incredible careers in their eras. We debate whether BMX bikes are getting too small and whether racing on 24 or even 26 inch wheels could make sense. We also talk about other BMX podcasts we listen to, the atmosphere and finish line scenes from the recent Mountain Bike World Cup, and throw it back to four cross World Cups and dual racing from the late ’90s into the 2000s. Jason shares thoughts on some of the local San Diego AA Pros from the ’80s and ’90s, we revisit the old World 1 through World 8 number plates for World Championship finalists, and ask whether BMX should bring that tradition back.     Podcast - Andy Contes

    This one has been a long time in the making. Big thanks to Brian Randolph at BioLab for making this one happen. The Andy Contes Podcast On this episode, Andy talks about the early days of his BMX career, from the Arizona teams he first rode for, to getting picked up by Free Agent, followed by Haro and GT, before eventually returning to Haro. We also talk about Andy winning almost straight off the bat, his battles with GT Factory superstar Shea Pierce, winning the IBMXF 1994 World Championships at Waterford Oaks, Michigan, and finishing second a year later in Columbia, along with his thoughts on that World Championships in 1995. Andy also talks about first getting on GT, battling the likes of Haro's Mike Brant, Powerlite's Mario Soto, and other top Ams on GT, Robinson, and Powerlite. He shares his thoughts on finishing second at the 1998 UCI World Championships in Australia behind Thomas Allier while still an Am, winning the 1998 ABA Amateur Title, turning pro, surviving a car crash with his GT teammates the day before racing at the 2000 World Championships in Argentina, attending graduate school while racing professionally, completing an internship at GT, and juggling both school and racing at the same time. Andy also reflects on winning a Pro Cruiser title, the challenges of balancing his career on and off the track with school and a full-time career, and returning to Haro for the final chapter of his professional career before retiring. We also talk about Andy getting back into racing, reconnecting with Jamie Leija at BioLab, and returning to the sport through his kids, who are now racing. Since coming back, Andy has already added two more World Championship titles to his incredible résumé. He also talks about his career at Intel, the Contes Gate, working with Toby Henderson, his future in BMX, being inducted into the Arizona BMX Hall of Fame, and so much more.

    Podcast BMX Mania's Jerry Landrum (Part 1)

    The man himself, Mr. BMX Mania, Jerry Landrum, is out in San Diego for the week, visiting and helping out with our Summer Camp. Of course, part of the plan for Jerry's trip was to record some podcasts and document some of the BMX Mania history. We talk about Jerry's early days getting into BMX, racing in Indiana, and moving into National racing against the likes of Everett Rosecrans, Doc Pearson, and Shag Shaughnessy. We also cover Jerry getting on the Mongoose Co. Factory Team and getting to meet and hang out with his longtime friend, Eric Rupe. Jerry talks about traveling internationally and racing at the Brighton '96 World Championships in England. We then get into the start of BMX Mania, shooting pictures, the early days of the internet, BMX media, and some of his sponsors. Jerry then talks about meeting UCI's Johan Lindström and starting to work with the UCI. Jerry gives us stories on Kyle Bennett, BMX World Magazine, shooting photos at the first 2008 Olympics and again at London 2012, and having the best seat in the house to watch BMX racing history being made. We talk about how big BMX Mania got, the visitors and views, and how it really was the website everyone went to for their up-to-date BMX news and scoops. Jerry talks about working with Warwick Wheeler and BMX World Magazine, and contributing to the NBL and so many other BMX media outlets at the time.     DIRTYFEST Highlights, Jeremy McGrath, Tommy Brackens, Charles Townsend, E.T., UCI World Cup & More

    In this episode, we talk about a bunch of podcasts I recorded at DIRTYFEST, including Charles Townsend, Tommy Brackens, the UK's first No. 1 girl rider, Jane Windle, and one of the BMX riders from the movie E.T., Robert Cardoza. We also talk about Paul being on a new episode of the Union Tapes that he just recorded. We also talk about DIRTYFEST from a few weeks ago and how the event continues to grow, racing against Jeremy McGrath, his VDC bike, some of the bikes I rode at DIRTYFEST, Eric Carter and Dick Cheeseburger's battle, and how Stu Thomsen is still fast in his 60s. We also talk about my summer camp season, which is about to kick off, and how summer camps continue to grow alongside Tyler Brown's in San Diego. We cover the last round of the UCI World Cup in Holland a few weeks ago and throw it back to the racing and drama from the Florida ABA in the '90s with Kevin Tomko, Adam Richards (RIP), and Erik Abbadessa at the NBMX Easter Classic.

    Charles Townsend on Racing the 1986 IBMXF World Championships at Slough

    This podcast features Charles Townsend reflecting on his trip to the UK in 1986 to race the IBMXF World Championships at Slough while still an amateur rider for Hutch. Charles talks about travelling from the United States with his Hutch teammate Eric Carter, his first impressions of the Slough track, and racing overseas for the first time. He also shares memories of battling Dutch European Champion Bas de Bever in both 20-inch and Cruiser competition, becoming a double World Champion, and forming lasting friendships with many of the English racers he met over the following years.

    Podcast - Dennis Ours

    Dennis’s story is a raw and compelling look at a life defined by resilience. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley with a Hells Angels father, Dennis experienced early trauma, including nearly being kidnapped at age 9 and facing a false statutory rape accusation at 13 that led him to attempt suicide. BMX racing became his unlikely lifeline after being introduced to the sport by neighbour Rich Bartlett in the early 1990s. Dennis raced through the mid to late 1990s. Life continued to throw challenges his way, including a catastrophic dirt bike crash that shattered 32 bones in his leg, years working as a tattoo artist in Utah and California, homelessness as recently as 2022, and losing his father in 2014. Through it all, BMX has continued to pull him back in. Now 48, Dennis is racing again after winning a Gold Cup and State Championship in 2022, raising two kids in the sport, enjoying the camaraderie of state racing, riding his bike, sharing his thoughts on the future, and more.

    Podcast Scott Hultgren

    In this episode of the BMX Weekly Pod, we catch up with San Diego local Scott Hultgren, a creative force on the design and branding side of Action Sports. Scott shares his journey from moving to San Diego at a young age, growing up riding BMX and later mountain bikes, to building a career in design and branding. He takes us inside the launch of his tire company, Versus, and what it takes to build something from the ground up in today’s market. We get into his time working in the skate industry with Plan B, along with his involvement with various brands over the years. Scott talks about meeting Ronnie Bonner at the ASR Trade Show in 2001 and working closely with him on logos and designs over the years. He also shares the difficult news of Ronnie’s illness, reflecting on the recent memorial weekend he attended and the incredible support shown for Ronnie and his lasting contribution to BMX. Scott also talks about current times riding BMX with his son Monty, who is now fully into racing. From starting in the beginner league at San Diego BMX in late 2023 to continuing to come back week after week, it’s come full circle.     Podcast – Malcolm Jarvis and the Birth of BMX in the UK

    Last month, while over in the UK, I made the trip down to Kent to spend the day with Malcolm Jarvis and his family. It was an incredible opportunity to sit down and capture the story of the early days of British BMX. For those who may not know, Malcolm was responsible for bringing BMX to the UK. In 1979, after hearing about the sport, he flew to Los Angeles, immersed himself in the emerging BMX scene, and returned home inspired to build something from the ground up. That trip proved pivotal, visiting BMX Plus! and Bob Osborn at BMX Action, meeting the likes of Bob Haro, watching him ride, and visiting the Corona downhill and Azusa track while meeting Scott Breithaupt and Stu Thomsen. It was during this time that Malcolm began his relationship with Mongoose, laying the foundation for what would become a defining chapter in UK BMX history. Back in Britain after that trip, Malcolm helped shape the sport from its earliest days, developing rule books, building tracks, organizing races, and driving promotion and media, even bringing BMX onto television screens. He went on to create one of the most successful and influential teams in British BMX history, the Ammaco Mongoose team, with the likes of Andy Ruffell, Pete Middleton, Craig Schofield, Chris Young, Brian Jones, and the Llewellyn brothers, and many more. Malcolm reflects on those formative years, the rapid rise of BMX in the UK, and the peak of the boom before the bubble eventually burst. He also shares what life looked like for the Jarvis family after stepping away, and how he reconnected with many friends decades later at the launch of the British BMX Hall of Fame in 2022. We also dive into the behind-the-scenes stories of the early UK scene, highlighting key figures such as Don Smith, Geoff Wiles, and David Duffield, as well as relationships with Halfords and Raleigh. Malcolm recounts making the portable track that he took around the country, the family backyard track at Knockhurst, the lead-up to the very first official BMX race in the UK at Redditch in 1980, Buckmore Park, and many more moments that helped shape the sport’s foundation and so much more. A huge thank you to Malcolm and his family for their hospitality and for sharing such an important piece of BMX history.

    Podcast - Martin Ogden (Oggy)

    Good to catch up with Martin Ogden (Oggy) while I’m over in the UK this week. We had a cup of tea, recorded a podcast, and just talked about anything that came up. We talk 4X Mountain Bikes, starting with a little history of 4X in the UK, some of the riders we raced with in the early 2000s, and events from NASS to the National Championships over the years. Oggy also gives us his thoughts on 4X in current times. We discuss Oggy’s personal racing in Mountain Bikes and BMX, the UK scene over the years, sponsors, race drama, British Cycling, the Olympics, and GB riders at the top level over the years and in the future. We also cover Oggy coaching, still riding bikes daily with his son, his passion for riding, and probably his own mental health, plus how much riding regularly can help. And we cover so much more

    Magazines, Whistler ’85 Worlds, UGP & Remembering Ronnie Bonner, Rob Indri, and Winnie Wright

    BMX Weekly podcast with Paul Roberts. We kick things off talking about BMX magazines, then get into some mid-’80s talk, including rider Solan Foster and the ’80s Huffy team Mike King, Brent Romero, and Gary Ellis. We also touch on the 1985 IBMXF Whistler Worlds, some terrible TV announcers, and the irritating fake Brad Simms on Facebook. From there, we reflect on the sad news of UGP’s Ronnie Bonner passing. We share our first memories of meeting Ronnie back in 1990 when we came over to the University of BMX training camp in Orlando. It was the first time we connected with Ronnie and UGP. It was a real honour to represent them, and we talked about how big UGP became in Europe during the ’90s. Great memories, great times. We then move on to remembering two of our old friends, Rob Indri and Winston “Winnie” Wright. It’s hard to believe it’s been over 25 years. Paul and I both grew up with Winnie and Rob, so we share some funny stories and good times from back then. Paul wraps it up with a political rant and more. Check it out.

    From SoCal Roots to 50+ Dominance: The Scott Felt Story

    In this episode, Brian Randolph (BioLab TM) and I sit down with Scott Felt to talk about his BMX journey, from growing up in the SoCal scene to becoming one of the fastest riders in the 50+ classes today. Scott grew up in La Verne / San Dimas, in the middle of a strong Southern California BMX scene, riding tracks like Azusa, Monrovia, and Honda Hills alongside riders such as Matt Haden, Harry Leary, and Tinker Juarez. He shares stories about racing with Geoff Schofield and “Chicken” George Seevers and riding for S&K Bicycles and later White Bear through the early 90s before stepping away from racing around 1993. Although he left competition, he never fully left riding, staying connected to BMX and riding with his friend Derek Garcia while focusing on work and family life. In 2013, after more than 20 years off, Scott returned to racing at the Reno National, later racing Ventura and reconnecting with Greg Hill, who helped train both his son and, eventually, Scott himself. He competed through 2017 before taking another break to ride mountain bikes and support his son’s football. In 2024, Scott returned again with a more focused approach, riding with his friend Lloyd Sherrod and later joining BioLab under team manager Brian Randolph. This time around, Scott raced names like John Whipperman, Corky Gainsford, Kirk Landeen, and Andy Contes, holding his own before moving into the 50-55 class, doubling at the ’24 Grands, and going on to win more than 40 Nationals in 2025, managing an injury toward the end of the season and dealing with it through the 2025 Grands. We also discuss the possibility of a future matchup with multi-time European and World Champion Richard Van Zomeren in the 50+ Cruiser class, and whether they might line up at the 2026 Worlds in Australia alongside some of the guys Scott is racing in the US in 2026 and his future goals.

    BioLab Peak Performance Team Manager Brian Randolph.

    I first met Brian back in 2006 at one of the Free Agent clinics I was running at the time with Cristian Becerine. We stayed in touch on and off over the years, and I’d also see him at races from time to time. So it was great to finally reconnect properly when Brian and his son made the drive from Arizona to San Diego on Friday. We linked up with one of his team riders, Scott Felt, hung out, and recorded a couple of episodes together. In this episode, we get into Brian’s story, starting with growing up in Florida and racing BMX in the 1980s. From there, Brian talks about his career in the Marine Corps, moving around for work, and continuing to race BMX wherever life took him when he could. We then bring it up to the present, where Brian shares how he became Team Manager of the BioLab team at the end of 2023. He gives insight into what the team is all about, the vision behind it, and some of the riders on the roster, including Pistol Pete Loncarevich and Andy Contes, and lots more.     After the last Joris Daudet / Chase debate, we received a lot of feedback and messages regarding the subject. Along with everything that was posted online, we decided we were done with it. Since then, Joris reached out, and we spoke for some time on the phone. It was actually good to talk with him and get his side of the story. Christophe Leveque (Chase) also still had a lot more he wanted to say. So here it is on this pod, and hopefully it’s somewhat balanced, with respect for both Christophe and Joris. We also talked about some other things going on in the race world, from drug bans to new DRIVERS on teams, the British BMX Hall of Fame, Illinois, Nevada, and New Jersey Hall of Fames, fast ’80s riders from Vegas, and more.     From Pit Bikes to the Gate: Kyle Kellner's East Coast Roots & BMX Journey

    In this episode, we sit down with Kyle Kellner for his first podcast appearance. Kyle shares how growing up on the East Coast in a moto-obsessed family led him from riding pit bikes at Budds Creek to discovering the BMX track tucked inside the motocross facility. From watching McGrath and Pastrana on VHS to sneaking onto the local BMX track as a kid, Kyle talks about the early moments that shaped his love for two wheels and how that path eventually led him to the team today.

    Part 1 of the Alex Jefferson Jr “Super G” Podcast

    We talk about Alex’s early days — being friends with Brian Blyther, discovering BMX, and riding at two of SoCal’s famous spots: the Azusa track and Pipeline Skatepark in Upland. We get into Alex’s friendship with Bo Usher, how he got his nickname “Super G” from a visit to the POW House, and meeting Chris Moeller, McGoo, Brad McDonald, Bill Ryan, and a lot of other key people who went on to become major figures in the BMX industry. Alex talks about the days driving to the ABA Grands and winning the Pit Bike race, working at S&M, selling S&M and later Super G t-shirts at the races, and putting on the Super G Jams at Sheep Hills and Twin Palms. We also talk about some of the riders who were sponsored by Super G Products. Alex then shares one of the most difficult times in his life — getting shot while riding his bike, waking up in ICU, and going through the long recovery that followed.
