धूर्तः वृद्धः

कस्मिंश्चित् ग्रामे कश्चन धूर्तः वृद्धः निवसति स्म । आजीवनं तेन तत्रत्याः ग्रामीणाः नानाप्रकारेण पीडिताः वञ्चिताः च । कदाचित् सः सन्निपातज्वरेण ग्रस्तः जातः । चिकित्सा व्यर्था जाता इत्यतः सः आसन्नमरणः जातः । तदा सः पुत्रम् आहूय किमपि कर्णे अवदत् । ततः यत् प्रवर्तते तेन ज्ञायते यत् सः वृद्धः कियान् धूर्तः अस्ति इति । सः मरणकाले अपि ग्रामीणान् कथं पीडितवान् इति कथायाः वस्तु वर्तते । (“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”) In a certain village lived a cunning old man. Throughout his life, he had troubled and cheated the villagers in many ways. One day, he was struck by a severe fever. As all medical treatment failed, he realized that death was near. He then called his son and whispered something into his ear. What happened next revealed just how crafty the old man really was. The story tells how, even at the time of his death, he managed to trouble the villagers once again.
