Once, Lord Narayana returned from outside and left his sandals in the sleeping chamber before lying down on the serpent-bed. Though the sandals had no fault, Narayana’s crown scolded them as impure. The conch, discus, mace, and others also criticized the sandals, supporting the crown. Saddened, the sandals prayed to Narayana. Then Narayana addressed the crown: ‘In the Treta Yuga, during my incarnation as Rama, for fourteen years you shall remain upon the sandals. Even the conch and discus, in the forms of Bharata and Shatrughna, must serve the sandals for those fourteen years.’
