आत्मगुणविकासनम्

कथायाम् अस्यां कदाचित् सर्वेऽपि प्राणिनः अन्ये जीविवेशेषाश्च सृष्टिकर्तुः ब्रह्मणः समीपं गत्वा परगुणानां प्रशंसां कुर्वन्तः स्वविषये अतृप्तिं च प्राकटयन् । गर्दभः शृगालः भवितुम् इच्छति, काकः कोकिलः भवितुम् इच्छति, कुक्कुरः मार्जालः भवितुम् इच्छति च । अन्येऽपि प्राणीनः स्वेच्छां प्राकटयन् । यद् इष्टं तद् सञ्जातमपि । किन्तु तस्य परिणामः कः अभवत् इत्येव अस्याः कथायाः कथावस्तु वर्तते । (“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”) In this story, once all creatures and other living beings went to Brahma, the Creator, praising the qualities of others while expressing dissatisfaction with themselves. The donkey wished to become a jackal, the crow wished to become a cuckoo, and the dog wished to become a cat. Other creatures too expressed their desires. Whatever they wished for was granted. But the consequences of those wishes form the theme of this tale.
