You’ll hear some hot and not-so-hot takes, as well as strongly held opinions and harsh criticisms. You’ll also hear much milder opinions along with facts and factual errors of all kinds. But hey, it is all about having fun conversations, as well as discovering new music and old gems, hidden or otherwise.

    Episode 126: Lex Walton (Sub Pop recording artist)

    "Like Cream, but without the fascist guitar player" Lex Walton (née Alex) is an American songwriter, actress, prose poet, and filmmaker, whose work is defined by an unflinching confessionality and live performances by ecstatic masochism and flailing. In addition to her catalog of a dozen or so mostly home-recorded albums, EPs and singles, she has also recorded collaborations with Devi McCallion (Black Dresses, Girls Rituals), Geese, and Ezra Furman, written the pop music manifesto The Sound Rocker's Prayer, and starred as lead character "Circle" in Louise Weard's five-hour epic film Castration Movie Anthology II: The Best Of Both Worlds. I had the chance to talk with Lex and she introduced me to a lot of cool music. Her new Sub Pop release is out now and it rules.

    Episode 125: Dwid Hellion (Integrity, Psywarfare)

    "It sounds like music made by madmen" I don't really know Dwid. Our paths have crossed briefly in the 90s, but he is largely an unknown quantity to me. What little I do know includes his eclectic taste in music and art, which has informed his own music in profound ways. So, he makes a perfect guest for this format. Right? What took me so long to invite him on? I dunno. I am occasionally lazy and prone to overlooking the obvious.

    Episode 55: Nancy Barile (author of "I'm Not Holding Your Coat")

    "I'm not holding your coat." Nancy Barile has seen things. She has seen some awesome things and not so awesome things. The former has informed Nancy on how to deal with the latter and fortunately for us, she’s documented all of it in her memoir “I’m Not Holding Your Coat”. Nancy grew up a suburban, Catholic school girl that fell in love with music and eventually found her way to hardcore-punk. But, she wasn’t just a spectator content to sit on sidelines. She managed bands and booked shows during the first wave of 80’s hardcore. Nancy has also been an english teacher for the past 29 years – so naturally I was eager to speak with her about some of the music that had impacted her life.     Episode 124: The Slayer Mix Tape (w/DX Ferris and Tim)

    "Well...the world IS ending..." Slayer casts a long shadow over anything that could fall within the confines of "extreme" music. But, it is safe to say that there are more than a handful of people that might have no experience with Slayer beyond hearing their name. I thought it might be fun to put together a couple of playlists for the uninitiated. To accomplish that I invited my buddy Tim and author DX Ferris ("33 1/3: Reign in Blood" and "Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography") to put together three unique lists.     "A Metallic KO without the Shirtless Septuagenarian" In the early 90’s Integrity’s “Those Who Fear Tomorrow” changed the face of hardcore – for better or worse. After that Lp there was a deluge of bands playing a type of hardcore that had less in common with punk and began playing metal with a hardcore aesthetic. Still, many people still called it “hardcore”. However, that’s not an indictment of the quality of the music. Some of these bands (not many) were quite good – regardless of what you called it. I talk about a few of the less heralded bands playing in this sandbox; Conviction, Darkside NYC, Starkweather, Bloodlet, Ironside, Splinter, Anguish, Cattlepress, Thoughts of Ionesco, Mayday and Turmoil. Later, Shawn and I shared a house with friends, he booked my band for a ton of shows and together we attended many, many more.
