Black Box Theory

Opening once locked doors and sharing a map to the maze.

We're Malcolm and Thomas, two engineers who got into the room at one of the biggest tech companies in the world. Pretty quickly we figured out that nobody hands you the manual once you're inside. Black Box Theory is us working it out loud.

Every week we get into what's actually going on, and we talk about it the way we would anyway: honestly, with receipts, and without pretending we have it all figured out. Some weeks that's a trillion-dollar IPO and what it really means for your money. Some weeks it's a Supreme Court ruling, a story taking over the timeline, or where the NBA is headed. Usually it's a mix of all of it, plus whatever we couldn't stop going back and forth about that week.

The point is always the same. We want to understand how this stuff really works: who's winning, who's paying for it, and what you can do with that once you can see it.

We're not financial advisors and we're not career coaches. We're two people a few years into figuring it out, sharing what we've learned and what we're still learning. If you're early in your career and tired of watching other people win without understanding why, you'll feel at home here.

New episodes every week. Come learn with us.

Stop Chasing Stocks. ETFs Are the Discipline.

Picking winners feels like the work. Diversifying is usually the work that pays. In this clip we get into the shift. Malcolm and Thomas break down what ETFs actually do — a basket instead of a bet — and why moving off stock-chasing takes discipline, not a hot take. They get into Roundhill's ETFs and DRAM as a live example: a way to get the memory theme without pretending you can time one ticker. If the memory-boom clip was the tape, and "ETF and chill" was the nervous system, this one is the conversion: stop hunting names, start owning the idea, and stay long enough for it to matter. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Introduction to ETFs 01:00 — Roundhill ETFs and DRAM 02:05 — The Shift to ETF Investing 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • ETFs are the diversified approach — one ticket, many names • Long-term wealth building is discipline, not a better prediction • Roundhill's DRAM-related ETFs are the example of owning a theme instead of chasing a stock — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Training Isn't the Whole Program. Sleep and Diet Are.

Hybrid training will expose every leak in the rest of your life. In this clip we get into the parts people skip: food, sleep, and stress. Malcolm and Thomas break down the athlete's version of hybrid work — and why the gym is only one piece. Diet as the missing puzzle piece. Sleep as the recovery you can't fake. Stress as the thing that undoes both. The conversation is that these aren't separate habits. They are one system. If the HYROX clip was the event Malcolm signed up for, this one is the operating manual around it. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Hybrid Training: The Athlete's Approach 00:48 — Diet and Nutrition: The Missing Puzzle Piece 01:15 — The Importance of Sleep 02:22 — Stress Management and Well-being 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Hybrid training only works if nutrition and rest are part of the plan • Sleep is not optional recovery — it is the work • Stress management sits next to the gym, not after it — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Malcolm Signed Up for HYROX. His Training Will Never Be the Same.

HYROX is a hybrid race — run, then work, then run again — built for people who actually go to the gym, not just people who post it. Malcolm signed up. In this clip he walks through what that did to his training. Malcolm gets into what HYROX actually is, why it's a different animal than a regular lift, and how preparing for it has changed his endurance and his fitness. Not a guru arc. Just one of the hosts putting his name on a start list and finding out what the work requires. If you've been looking for the human beat in this episode, this is it. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Introduction to HYROX 00:37 — The HYROX Event 02:04 — Training for HYROX 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • HYROX is a hybrid running-and-stations race aimed at everyday gym goers • Training for it is its own program — not just "do more CrossFit" • Malcolm's endurance and fitness have jumped because the event doesn't let you hide — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. SanDisk, Apple, and the Memory Boom Nobody Priced For

Memory cycles are supposed to be cyclical. This one hasn't been acting like it. In this clip we get into what that did to the stocks — and what kind of ETF even belongs in a tape like this. Malcolm and Thomas break down the abnormality of the current memory boom and the stock growth around names like SanDisk and Apple: the kind of run that doesn't look like the old cycle. Then they get into how unpredictable that makes the next move, why "safe" still has a job, and Roundhill's more unusual ETF offerings — vehicles built for a market that doesn't always fit the textbook. If the last investing clips were mindset and inflation, this one is the tape: a boom, two names, and a product that doesn't look like a vanilla index. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — The Memory Cycle Boom 01:02 — Unprecedented Stock Growth 01:32 — Predicting Market Trends 02:23 — Roundhill's Unique ETFs 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • The current memory cycle has not been behaving like a normal boom-and-bust • Names like SanDisk and Apple have put up the kind of stock growth people don't usually get to see • Roundhill's ETF lineup is the "now what" — unusual products for a tape that won't sit still — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Inflation Is Taxing Your Savings. Investing Is the Counter.

Cash that sits still loses. That's not a vibe — that's the math. In this clip we get into what inflation actually does to your savings, and why investing is how you fight back. Malcolm and Thomas break down the impact of inflation on money that never gets put to work, why a retirement plan that ignores inflation is a plan that shrinks, and the bigger backdrop: global debt and what that pile means for regular people. If the long-term investing clip was mindset, this one is the cost of waiting — savings, retirement, and a debt load that doesn't stay on someone else's books. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Impact of Inflation on Savings 01:33 — The Importance of Investing 02:09 — Retirement Planning and Inflation 03:05 — Significance of Global Debt 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Inflation quietly taxes cash that never gets invested • Retirement math has to include inflation, or the number you saved isn't the number you get • Global debt is the backdrop — it doesn't stay abstract when it hits your cost of living — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Racism Doesn't Expire. The Coverage Does.

These incidents don't stop. A lot of the national coverage does. In this clip we get into that gap — and who fills it. Malcolm and Thomas get into the persistence of racism and violence toward specific communities in America: that it is historical, that it is ongoing, and that remembrance and justice are not the same as a news cycle. The conversation explores how many of these stories never get national airtime, and the role social media has taken on in spreading awareness when the bigger platforms go quiet. If you only catch what makes the homepage, this is the part about what still happens off it. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Persistence of Racism and Violence 01:30 — Lack of National Coverage and Social Media 02:25 — Historical and Ongoing Nature of Racism 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Racism and violence toward specific communities in America have not gone away • A lot of these incidents never get national coverage • Social media is often how people even find out — and remembrance is part of the work — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Long-Term Investing Beats the Timeline. Every Time.

The timeline wants a reaction. The portfolio wants a time horizon. In this clip we get into which one actually pays. Malcolm and Thomas break down why long-term thinking is the whole game — and why short-term speculation is the trap that feels like work. They get into having real belief in what you own, even when the day, the week, or the headline says otherwise, and how to balance timing with confidence so you don't confuse a dip with a thesis breaking. If "ETF and chill" was the behavior fix for 24-hour markets, this one is the mindset: zoom out, hold the conviction, stop trading the noise. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — The Importance of Long-Term Thinking 01:03 — Avoiding Short-Term Speculation 02:22 — Having Belief and Confidence in Investments 03:18 — Balancing Timing and Confidence 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Long-term thinking is the edge most people give up for a headline • Short-term speculation feels like action; it usually isn't a plan • Belief in what you own has to survive the ugly days, or it was never a thesis — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Sports Betting and a $40T Debt — Same Trap, Different Table

One number is on the Treasury's books: $40 trillion. The other is in your pocket, on an app, after a game. In this clip we get into how those two burdens rhyme. Malcolm and Thomas break down sports betting addiction — the ease of the tap, the chase, the financial damage — next to the US national debt hitting a record $40 trillion. The conversation explores the comparison: a country leveraged to the hilt, and a growing betting habit that runs on the same logic. Alarming on both sides. If the last debt clip was history and war, this one is the parallel — what addiction looks like at the kitchen table and at the federal level. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — The Financial Burden of National Debt 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Sports betting addiction is a growing concern with real money on the line • US national debt hit a record $40 trillion (Treasury, August 2026) • The clip puts those two burdens next to each other — same trap, different table — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Markets Never Sleep. That's Why You're Anxious.

Extended hours sound like more access. They also mean more hours to check the app, more hours to panic, and more hours to blow a plan you already had. Malcolm and Thomas break down what longer trading hours actually do to your behavior — the anxiety, the impulse click, the trade you wouldn't have made if the market had just been closed. Then they get into the counter: ETF and chill. Pick a diversified fund, stop starring at the tape, and let time do the work instead of your nervous system. If 24-hour markets feel like a feature, this clip is the part about what they cost you. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Impact of Extended Trading Hours 00:39 — The Dangers of Impulsive Trading 01:24 — ETF and Chill: A Safer Investment Strategy 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Extended trading hours can spike anxiety and make impulsive trades easier • Checking the market more often is not the same thing as investing better • "ETF and chill" is the quieter play: diversified funds, less staring at the tape — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. GTA 6 Isn't Just a Game. It's a Test of the Industry.

GTA 6 has been "coming" for so long that the wait is part of the product. So is the pre-order. In this clip we get into what that actually costs you. Malcolm and Thomas break down why this release is being treated as one of the most important in gaming history — not just as a title, but as a test of what the industry can get away with. The endless wait. The pressure to pre-order a game you still can't hold. And then the group threatening to leak GTA 6 assets, and the demands attached to it: a spotlight on anti-consumer practices that were already in the room. If the last two clips were ownership and leverage, this one is the launch itself — hype, money down, and who writes the rules. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — The Anticipation for GTA 6 00:25 — The Endless Wait and Pre-Order Dilemma 01:25 — The Significance of GTA 6's Release 02:23 — The Potential Impact on the Gaming Industry 03:14 — The Demands and Concerns of the Group 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • GTA 6 is being treated as one of the most important releases in gaming history • The wait and the pre-order are part of the business model, not a side effect • The leak threats and demands put anti-consumer practices in the industry on the table — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. The National Debt Just Hit $40 Trillion. Here's Why It Matters.

Forty trillion. That's not a talking point — it's the number on the Treasury's books. In this clip we get into what it actually means. Malcolm and Thomas break down the US national debt hitting a record $40 trillion, the historical path that got us here, and the part people skip: war has been a real driver of how fast that pile grew. They get into the size of the number, the pattern of accumulation, and what it implies for the future — retirement, financial independence, and a bill that doesn't stay in Washington. If the debt felt abstract, this is the clip that puts a figure on it. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — The Alarming Increase in National Debt 01:24 — Historical Context of Debt Accumulation 03:07 — Impact of War on Debt 📊 Key stats from this segment: • US national debt hit a record $40 trillion (Treasury, August 2026) • A decade ago the debt was roughly half that size • War has been a major driver of how the debt stacked up over time — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. The GTA 6 Leak Is a Power Fight, Not Just a Spoiler

A GTA 6 leak isn't just spoiled cutscenes. It's a fight over who actually holds the leverage — the players, or the company shipping the biggest game in a generation. Malcolm and Thomas get into the controversy around the GTA 6 leak and what it says about the power dynamics between gamers and the industry. When a title this size is on the calendar, a leak isn't noise — it's a test of who can force a move, who has to eat the damage, and who still owns the story. They also get into why GTA 6 is that rare release: the hype is real, the stakes are cultural, and the industry feels it. If you've been treating this as trailer discourse, this clip is the part about control. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — GTA 6 Leak Controversy 01:42 — Power Dynamics: Gamers vs. Gaming Industry 03:04 — Significance of GTA 6 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • The GTA 6 leak is a controversy about control, not just spoiled footage • Power between gamers and the industry shows up in who can force a move before launch • GTA 6 is that rare release where the hype is also the leverage — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. GTA 6 Is Coming. You May Never Own It.

GTA 6 is the biggest game on the calendar — and the fight around it isn't just hype. It's about whether you actually own what you pay for. Malcolm and Thomas break down how the GTA 6 rollout sits on top of a bigger shift: digital ownership replacing the disc, and what that costs the player. Sony's reported move away from disc-based consoles is the control play underneath it — once the game only lives on their store, they set the price, the access, and whether it stays in your library. Then they get into the leak layer: threats and demands from figures like Cyberleak, and how that noise now sits next to the release itself. If you thought this was just a trailer drop, this clip is the receipts on who holds the leverage. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — The Shift to Digital Ownership 01:11 — Sony's Control and Pricing Power 02:37 — Threat of Leaks and Demands 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Digital ownership is quietly replacing physical ownership — you pay, they keep the keys • Control over price and access shifts to the platform once the disc is gone • Leak threats and demands are now part of how a major release actually lands — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. BBT #23 | Your Savings Are Losing — 24-Hour Markets, Debt, and GTA 6

Your cash is losing every day it sits still. Markets are staying open later. The game is changing underneath both. This week we get into what long-term investing actually looks like when the stories on your timeline keep changing. We start with thematic ETFs — the kind that give you a clean shot at one idea, but don't come with a long track record you can lean on. From there it's market narratives versus a real time horizon: why the people who last treat the noise as weather and keep building anyway. Then the market's clock changes. Extended trading hours sound like more access. They also mean more hours to trade, more hours to get shaken out, and a market that doesn't give you the same overnight pause it used to. That lands next to the national debt and what it means for retirement and financial independence if the bill keeps growing while you're trying to get free. The through-line is simple: sitting still costs money. Inflation eats cash that never gets put to work. Investing isn't a flex — it's how you keep the value of your time from shrinking. We get into that plainly, then follow the same ownership question into gaming: the industry's shift to digital assets, and what you actually hold when the disc, the license, and the platform all belong to somebody else. The conversation gets heavier from there. We get into racial violence and injustice — not as a headline to spin, but as a cost that never shows up on a brokerage statement. And we close on GTA 6: the size of that release, the fight around it, and why a video game can tell you as much about culture and control as a ticker can. Time, money, and who pays. Same thread, different rooms. 00:00 Thematic ETFs and Historical Data 01:08 Market Narratives and Long-Term Investing 07:11 Extended Trading Hours and Market Impact 16:03 National Debt and Financial Independence 22:32 The Importance of Investing 24:09 The Impact of Inflation on Savings 26:20 The Gaming Industry's Shift to Digital Assets 39:05 Racial Violence and Injustice 44:38 Controversy Surrounding the GTA 6 Release We are not financial advisors, tax professionals, or legal experts. What It Actually Takes to Build a Startup in College

The pitch deck makes it look clean. The build is anything but. In this clip, Jayson gets into the messy reality of getting Rooted off the ground. Jayson Johnson breaks down what it really took to develop Rooted, a campus live platform — including the part nobody warns you about: negotiating with a university and working through the bureaucracy to get something built on campus. He also gets into the co-founder side of it, how they collaborated and divided the work, and why who you build with matters as much as what you're building. If you've ever wanted to start something in college, this is the honest version. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Introduction to Rooted 00:30 — Challenges of Building Rooted 01:25 — Co-founder Collaboration 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Building a campus platform means navigating real university bureaucracy and negotiation • Co-founder collaboration and a clear division of work can make or break the build • The real startup story is messier — and more instructive — than the highlight reel — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Who Gets to Own Space? | Jayson Johnson

The next frontier isn't just being explored — it's being claimed. And the rules being written now will decide who gets a seat. In this clip, Jayson gets into it. Why Your Network Matters More Than You Think

The degree gets you in the door. Your community is what carries you after. In this clip we get into why that matters more than most people realize. Malcolm, Thomas, and guest Jayson Johnson break down the real significance of community and networking — especially coming out of an HBCU and stepping into post-graduation life. Beating Imposter Syndrome When Nobody Looks Like You

You finally get in the room — and then a voice says you don't belong there. In this clip, Jayson gets honest about that feeling and how he flipped it. Jayson Johnson shares his experience at a conference where imposter syndrome crept in, and how he turned it into fuel by seeing himself as a representative of his HBCU. He talks about what it's really like to compete and stand out in spaces where almost nobody looks like you — the pressure, the doubt, and the motivation that comes from knowing you're not just there for yourself. If you've ever felt like the only one in the room, this one will hit. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Imposter Syndrome and Representation 01:23 — Competing and Standing Out 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Imposter syndrome is common in underrepresented spaces — and it can be reframed as motivation • Representing where you come from can turn pressure into purpose • Standing out when nobody looks like you is hard, but you're rarely there for just yourself — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. What People Get Wrong About Black Greek Life

Scroll TikTok and you'd think Greek life is all strolls and probates. That's the highlight reel — not the whole story. In this clip we set the record straight.
