CAAMFest 2024 - Home Court and Ashima
Send us Fan Mail We're celebrating CAAMFest (Center for Asian American Media) 2024 with two films about young women athletes! Home Court is a documentary that follows Ashley Chea, a basketball prodigy and first generation Cambodian-American, as she navigates recruitment, injury, and generational trauma. We are joined by director Erica Tanamachi and producer Jenn Lee Smith who share their excitement in telling a story about Asian American sport leagues, showing a positive relationship between a player and her coach, prioritizing people on and off camera, and working with two Bitch Talk favorites, Lisa Ling and Ruby Ibarra. The documentary Ashima follows a year in the life of 13 year-old Ashima Shiraishi, one of the world's youngest elite rock climbers, as she travels with her father/coach from New York to South Africa in the hopes of becoming the youngest climber to conquer a V14 boulder (in the climbing world, this is an elite ranked climb). Director Kenji Tsukamoto and producer Minji Chang share their decade long journey into getting this film made, Kenji's intimate filmmaking experience that involved living with the family, and Ashima's reaction to watching the film ten years later. Gasoline Rainbow follows five teenagers from small-town Oregon who, with high school in the rear view, hop in a van and decide to embark on one last adventure. In this episode we dish on everything from how we met the Ross Brothers at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020, the photo that prompted them to ask us to be in their film, bonding with and mentoring the teens in the film, and how they were able to make an optimistic movie in a very difficult time. I Saw The TV Glow Director Jane Schoenbrun

In We're All Gonna Die, an alien spike has materialized onto the earth's atmosphere, and a struggling beekeeper and a grieving EMT are forced to join forces on a roadtrip after the spike has mysteriously caused the teleportation of his car and her bees. Co-directors/co-writers Freddie Wong and Matthew Arnold join us to discuss their decision to set the apocalypse in our regular world, expressing honesty through lies, and the funny story behind the main character's calf fetish. Desert Road is a horror/sci-fi about a woman who crashes her car in the middle of the desert and walks down the road for help - only to realize no matter which way she walks, she ends up back at her crashed car. Director/writer Shannon Triplett shares the true story this film is based on, the brilliance of her lead actress who carries the film, Kristine Froseth, and the importance of casting (including heavyweights Beau Bridges and Frances Fisher), and how the success of the shoot was centered on the full moon.
