The Responsible One: Why Carrying Everyone Keeps You Stuck (Rescuer, People Pleasing & Burnout)

You're not exhausted because you care too much. You're exhausted because you've been the responsible one, the rescuer, the one everyone leans on, for far too long. I'm Norma O'Kelly, systemic coach and constellations practitioner, and in this episode I explore how the responsible role drives people pleasing and burnout, and why it quietly blocks change when you're ready to start a business, retrain, or step into a new season of life. It isn't only the eldest daughter. The responsible one can be any child in the family. My own mother was the youngest. You'll discover: • How the Drama Triangle (rescuer, victim, persecutor) keeps you going in circles • Why rescuing often hides a deeper need to be needed • How family systems and inherited loyalties shape what you carry • Why learning to receive is essential, not indulgent • Small shifts from helpful to useful, and from rescuing to coaching I share my own story of overgiving and how family constellations helped me see the role I took on in my family of origin. I also offer simple somatic practices, like the pause and the physiological sigh, to help you notice where responsibility sits in your body. This autumn, put down what was never yours to carry and make room for something new. If this episode spoke to you, I'd love it if you'd rate and review the podcast. It really helps other people find it. And if someone in your life is always the one carrying everything, share this with them. Signs, Coincidences & What Your Heart Already Knows

Signs, Coincidences & What the Heart Already Knows Have you ever thought of someone and they rang you five minutes later? Seen the same thing appear again and again at exactly the moment you needed a nudge? Felt something shift in a room before a single word was spoken? This episode is about all of that and the science, the folklore, and the lived experience that explains why it's anything but random. We go into the world of signs and synchronicity through a systemic lens.. what the field is, how it speaks, and why most of us have stopped hearing it. We bring in the Irish folklore of the Bóín Dé ( Ladybirds) and the magpie, the neuroscience of the Reticular Activating System, HeartMath research on heart coherence, and what quantum physics has to say about fields, attention, and connection. And at the centre of it all ...Your Heart ❤️. Not as metaphor. As intelligence. When we live from the heart, when we slow down enough to get coherent, our outer world starts to reflect what our inner world is broadcasting. Signs become visible. Synchronicities multiply. Intuition sharpens. The field gets a word in. This episode also holds space for those who have lost someone and for the sceptic who suspects there's more going on but hasn't had language for it yet. Both are welcome here. Includes a live coherent breathing practice and spoke about the Two Bells track shared below. Please only do this in a safe, quiet space where you can fully relax seated or lying down. Do not listen while driving, cycling, swimming, or operating machinery. If you feel light-headed at any point, simply return to your normal breathing rhythm. 8 Minute Pause for a Busy Mind | Breathwork to Calm the Nervous System

This short guided breathwork practice is designed to help you slow down and return to yourself. In eight minutes you will move through a gentle coherent breathing rhythm, a vagus nerve activating breath, and a grounding moment that brings your awareness back into your body and your heart. This is the kind of practice I often guide clients through between meetings, before a difficult conversation, or at the end of a demanding day when the mind is busy and the body is carrying more than it should. You don’t need any experience with meditation or breathwork. Just find a quiet place, sit comfortably, and follow the rhythm of the breath. Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is pause, breathe, and allow the nervous system to settle. You can return to this practice anytime you need a moment to reconnect with yourself. Please listen to this practice in a safe and comfortable environment. Do not listen while driving, cycling, swimming, or operating machinery. If you feel light-headed at any point simply return to your normal breathing rhythm. ⚠️ Important Safety Note Please do not listen while driving or operating machinery. This meditation is intended to be done lying down or seated in a safe, quiet space where you can fully relax. 💜 SAVE this meditation and come back to it whenever your mind is racing, your body feels tense, or sleep feels difficult. 20 min Gently Body Scan + Heart Coherence- Helps You Sleep deeply!

Struggling to sleep or calm a racing mind? This 20-minute gentle body scan meditation with heart coherence is designed to help you relax deeply, settle your nervous system, and fall asleep naturally. In this episode of Beyond The Norm, I guide you through a slow, grounding body scan and breathwork practice that helps you move out of mental overdrive and back into the body — where rest, safety, and sleep become possible. This meditation is especially supportive if: you can’t sleep your mind won’t switch off at night your body feels tense or wired you’re feeling emotionally overloaded you want a gentle way to fall asleep without forcing rest We begin with calming, coherent breathing before moving through a full body scan — from the feet all the way up — inviting areas of tension to soften and release. We then spend time connecting with the heart centre, using heart coherence to support emotional regulation, safety, and deeper rest. This practice is ideal: before sleep in bed at night during periods of stress or anxiety whenever your nervous system needs calming Many people return to this meditation regularly to help them sleep more deeply and feel more grounded. ⚠️ Important Safety Note Please do not listen while driving or operating machinery. Transition Without Certainty? How to Take the Next Step

In this episode of Beyond The Norm, I explore what it really means to be in transition, personally and professionally. I talk about why uncertainty, imperfection, and discomfort are not signs you’re doing it wrong, but natural parts of change. I share practical ways to navigate transitions without panic or pressure, including how to stay present, focus on what you can control, and choose self-respect over fear when making decisions. I also reflect on the impact of societal expectations, why they can keep us stuck, and how taking the next obvious step can restore a sense of agency when clarity isn’t available yet. This episode is for anyone feeling unsettled, in between, or unsure what comes next and looking for a grounded, realistic way forward that doesn’t bypass the complexity of real life. 🔑 Keywords transitions, navigating change, self-compassion, imperfection, personal growth, professional change, societal expectations, self-respect, uncertainty, next steps, staying present, leadership in transition, identity change Please rate, review and share this episode to anyone who will benefit or need clarity in a transition. How to Rebuild Your Purpose and Identity After Loss

In this episode of Beyond The Norm, I’m diving into something we all face , the kind of loss that doesn’t just break your heart, but breaks your identity wide open. I talk about how loss doesn’t just take something from us… it takes a version of who we were. And in that space, we’re left wondering: Who am I now? What’s my purpose? What happens next? I explore how grief can create a full-blown identity crisis, especially in midlife, when the roles we’ve played start slipping from our fingers. I share what I’ve learned personally and professionally about navigating these endings, honouring them, and letting them reshape us rather than destroy us. I also talk about how purpose often emerges in the rubble not in spite of loss, but because of it. And I bring in one of my favourite tools, breathwork, as a way to regulate the nervous system, clear emotional debris, and reconnect to the parts of ourselves we thought were gone. If you’ve felt lost, disconnected, foggy, or unsure who you are after a loss , whether it’s a relationship, a job, a dream, a home, or even an identity — this episode will help you understand what’s happening, why it’s happening, and how to move forward with intention and compassion. Take AWAYS: Loss isn’t a moment; it’s a continuum we learn to live with. Grief often triggers a crisis of identity. Purpose tends to reveal itself through loss, not before it. Breathwork can anchor and heal when everything feels chaotic. It’s essential to honour the endings in your life. It’s okay to feel lost — it’s part of the rebirthing process. Finding your tribe makes the journey lighter. Your purpose evolves as you evolve. You can rebuild yourself after loss — gently, slowly, truthfully. Life’s hardest chapters often spark the deepest transformation. loss, identity, purpose, grief, self-discovery, breathwork, healing, transformation, resilience, personal growth, identity after loss, how to find purpose after loss, rebuilding identity, grief and identity crisis, breathwork for healing, purpose after grief, midlife identity shift, spiritual awakening after loss I mention Elizabeth Gilbert’s newest book about loss, All the Way to the River: Love, Loss, and Liberation. What Nobody Tells You About Change - Beyond the Norm Podcast

What Nobody tells you about Change: In this episode of Beyond the Norm, I dive into the truth about change, not as a single moment, but as a living, breathing process. We’ll talk about the grief that comes with letting go of old identities, the awkward middle ground where everything feels uncertain, and the quiet resilience it takes to grow through transition. I explore how change ripples through our families, teams, and communities and how our loyalty to old patterns can sometimes keep us stuck. This is a conversation about resourcing yourself, honouring your emotions, and learning to feel safe in the unfamiliar. Because change isn’t a failure; it’s the system reorganising itself for your next evolution. Takeaways Change isn’t a one-off event : it’s a continuous cycle of becoming. ( Quelle Surprise Norma ;) Your identity evolves with every shift. Grieving your old self is part of healthy growth. The messy middle is normal — and necessary. Fear is not the enemy; it’s information. Resourcing yourself is the ultimate act of self-care. Your change impacts — and liberates — the system around you. Beyond the Norm: Bridging Belonging with Authenticity

In this episode, I explore the concepts of belonging and authenticity. I talk about how both are intangible yet essential parts of our lives. Drawing from my own experiences, I reflect on how belonging has shaped my sense of self and the impact it has on my identity. I also dive into the importance of bridging the gap between belonging and authenticity, and how vital it is to find tribes or communities where we can truly be ourselves. I highlight why prioritising authenticity is so important, and offer support for those of us on this journey towards self-discovery and belonging. Keywords: belonging, authenticity, sense of self, tribes, communities, bridging, support Takeaways: Belonging and authenticity are crucial, though intangible, aspects of our lives. Reflecting on our sense of belonging within systems like family, school, and work helps us understand how it has shaped who we are. Authenticity is about staying true to ourselves rather than conforming to societal expectations. Finding tribes or communities where we can be our authentic selves is essential for our well-being. Bridging belonging and authenticity requires self-reflection, support, and creating spaces where we can show up as our true selves.
