After five DWI’s landed me prison, something had to change. One day I got into a fight and I spent eight days in solitaire confinement thinking about my life and the decisions I had made that led me to that dark place, literally.
I came out of the hole a different man with a different heart, mind, soul, direction, and outlook on life. I got mentored by a couple of inmates who eventually made parole but within a year they were both back in. This confused me and ticked me off. I wondered how I was going to make it out there.
Since my release in 2006 we’ve opened up a transitional house for men, with another ”ranch” coming, launched a documentary, been on the Mike Huckabee Show, launched this podcast, and it goes into prisons all over the nation.
In this episode, Jay Dan and Jessa just do what they love to do, talk. They talk about everything from Jay Dan's recent knee surgery, including the big incision reveal, to the C-10 Truck Show he went to, to sports including the Cowboys loss, and lots of jokes.
Then the father and daughter duo break down the differences between a pessimist and optimist, and how living in either extreme can be unhealthy.
Share with people you know, especially families that are thinking about starting a family podcast. Jay Dan and Jessa having been doing this for almost six years together. Proof that kids and parents can get along, and change some lives in the process.

ONE MORE FOR NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH (which was September, I know, I got distracted)
In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Robb Kelly for a second time. We last spoke with him in September of 2022. A lot has happened since then. He went on a weight gain and weight loss journey and we dig into why that happened.
He opened up a tea shop in San Antonio and added to his tool box of recovery with Breath Box Studio.
Robb Kelly, PhD – The Recovery Expert – was born in Manchester England. He grew up in a family of musicians and developed a strong love for music at an early age. He was performing on stage at the age of nine.
During his early twenties, he worked at the elite and influential Abbey Roads Studio, as a session musician in London. Addiction was always close to his heart as Robb Kelly PhD was born into a family that had a history of alcoholism.
He began drinking and using drugs at an early age, but he managed to stay on a path of success, moving to Oxford in the early 1980’s to pursue a PhD in Psychology at the prestigious University of Oxford.
He continued to drink heavily during his time in Oxford – but still managed to complete his Doctorate studies, graduating with a PhD in psychology in 1984. Even though he was a heavy drinker – no one would have predicted, that he would be living on the streets of Manchester, homeless and alone.
He recalls the night where he had a staggering revelation when it came to his own alcoholism. It would later coin two of his most popular catch phrases: “The Problem is not our Drinking, it is our Thinking” and “Step out of the Disease, and into the Solution.”
Robb was standing on a street corner one night in Manchester. His body was shaking from alcohol withdrawal, and he stood in front of a liquor store, trembling, desperately waiting for the store to open. He knew that as soon as he drank that first sip of alcohol, he would feel relief.
As soon as the liquor store opened, he rushed into the store. The clerk grabbed a bottle of Vodka from the shelf, and placed it in a brown paper bag in front of him. As he lifted the bag in his hands his trembling stopped. His body stopped shaking and his mind rested at ease. He had not even taken that first sip; it was just the promise of alcohol that stopped his shaking and eased his restless mind.
This was the moment that he refers to as his, “Ah-Ha” moment, –and he realized that the problem was not the alcohol, but how he thought about the alcohol.
Today, Robb is a world-renowned addiction expert who believes in treating the problem, not the symptoms. He has worked for many years helping addicts and alcoholics to Recover their lives from the disease of addiction.
Robb's philosophy may seem unconventional and unorthodox. But, they are based on extensive research and behavior studies that he conducted over the last 20 years. He pulls the disease out of his clients and empowers them to fight their disease head on.
Some people have referred to him as “The Gordon Ramsay of the Addiction World” because of his direct, no-nonsense, and candid approach to recovery. He has discovered that in order to get his clients to change their thinking, they must confront their disease with candor and vigor.
Robb works to “make the road of recovery less of a mystery tour.” Robb has worked with thousands of people including celebrities of film, music, and sports. He has lectured at many high profile universities and hospitals on the subject of addiction, and is recognized as a leading authority on addiction recovery methods that are changing lives all around the world.

Amy ran the streets barefoot as a kid, and was raised in bars by her Grandmother. She was molested by her grandfather from age two until nine years old.
Her life's story has so many twists and turns, including going to Bible school, just before going into prison. Her story of recovery is one that needs to be heard loud during National Recovery Month.
With a background like hers, there was no way a place like Planet Fitness was going to hire her. But God. Thankful for her manager who gave her a chance and allowed her to move all the way up to General Manager of her own store. From a life that underperformed, to taking two underperforming stores, and turning all three around. Her story will make you say WOW for so many reasons.

In this episode, Jay Dan sits down with Johnny Gleaton in Atmore, Alabama at the We Care Program.
Jay Dan recently visited the Florida and Alabama prisons and had the chance to catch up with Johnny in person, outside the prison, after seeing him inside for over two years. Johnny's life, upbringing, sexual abuse, betrayal, criminal life, and eventually his son saying these words to him, "Daddy, you ain't ever gonna do right", all played a part in who Johnny is today.
Johnny taught himself to play guitar in prison and became the worship leader at the Annex unit, which is where I met him and have become friends ever since.
His story has so many twists and turns, but eventually, it turned to Jesus and Johnny has become a great man of God.

Waxahachie, TX Fireworks Show. Fireworks were synced to music from KBEC 99.1 radio. They own the rights to play. We don’t any of it or make money off any of the music we share here.
When men and women get out of prison, one of the most popular episodes, second only to the Christmas lights episodes, is the fireworks episodes.
So, this is an episode where Jessa and Jay Dan talk a little shop then show highlights of the Forgiven Felons Freedom Open House, including the water balloon fight, and the fireworks. This year, we brought the drone out for a little bit, but had technical difficulties.

They do pod ministry exclusively and it is so effective in reaching the ones who will never set foot in a chapel or gym.

Hey Background Check family, just wanted to give everyone on the inside a quick update with what's going on with my health. We got some great episodes coming with Jessa and Bill and Stephanie from The Edge Podcast, but just wanted to share with you what's been happening to me the last 9 days.
Thank you for your prayers.
Audrey works for a roofing company, that she found through a second chance staffing agency, which she found because she was connected to B.I.G. Love Ministries.
Audrey's motherhood journey is a rough one, but God is redeeming the time in her life and she is living a life that her family admits is very different. She's involved in church leadership, recovery groups, and prison ministry.
We cry and laugh through her story that involves, abandonment, drug using and dealing, jail, a raid with her own son, prison, and falling on her knees crying out to God.

Facebook Post: "She didn’t know it then… but the woman watching that podcast from a prison cell ….would one day be sitting on it. 🔥"- Sarah Burt
This episode we sit down with Sarah Burt and talk life, addiction, muscle deterioration, motherhood, prison, plea deals, and losing custody of children. We talk a lot about Jesus too.
It wasn't too long ago that Sarah was sitting on her bunk watching the podcast from her prison unit. Now she's out, involved in helping people out here, and back inside prison, all while on her journey to get her relationship with her kids restored. "We serve a God of restoration" says Sarah.
We play a tribute to all mothers everywhere at the beginning of the episode with a poem about mother's and some pics of some amazing ladies. We laugh and cry our way to talking for almost 90 minutes. It's that good of a story.

In this episode we sit down with Cheyenne from the Cheyenne Pitts Band.
Cheyenne's story takes all the normal twists and turns of addiction and family dysfunction, but then adds some guitar, country music, and a "suicide by cop" element to it. Cheyenne admits that most of his trouble came as a result of his anger issues, which, with the help of God, and his time in prison, has been under control.
Cheyenne travels and plays on the weekends but holds down a job during the week in which he is a project manager.
After we chat for a little bit, Cheyenne breaks into a few songs for us in studio. Share this with everyone you know, and let your loved ones in prison know that it's probably available on their tablets.
