Duendes

Folklore is full of stories of Little People known by many names. The Wompanoag tribe call them pukwudgies. The Comanche call them nunnupi. In Scandinavia they’re called nisse. My grandparents took care of me every single day after school and all through the school holidays, until I was in high school and had to ride a bus home. When I’d want to nap, I wander to the back room of their house to lie down. Perched on top of a dresser in the corner of that room was what I thought was a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary. Standing on a crescent moon, she loomed over a small row boat being tossed on the waves with three sailors aboard, her arms open, a golden halo around her head. Every culture since the beginning of time has horrific stories they tell their children. These stories are often intended to be cautionary tales, ways to keep children safe. Don't trust strangers, they may be fae and take you away. Don't get too close to the river, ghosts may pull you under. Don't wander in the woods, a witch may try to eat you. One such story, common across Spanish and Portuguese speaking regions, is that of El Cucuy. This creature is known by many names. Whether you call it La Cuca, El Coco, or El Cucuy, the moral of the story is the same. You'd better behave or something terrible will happen.
