Authentic Confidence with Dr. Aziz

Dr. Aziz Gazipura, Psychologist and Author

Do you worry what other people will think? Does it make you doubt yourself, feel guilty, and ultimately stop you from being fully yourself?

This can show up as people-pleasing and difficulty saying no. Or as social anxiety, staying silent in meetings, replaying conversations for hours afterward.

Dr. Aziz Gazipura is a clinical psychologist and bestselling author of Not Nice. He's helped thousands of people break free from self-doubt and the fear of others' opinions.

After 20 years of clinical work, Dr. Aziz discovered one pattern running underneath all of it. He calls it the approval trap: prioritizing approval over being yourself, saying what you mean, and going for what you actually want.

This show is for the person who looks confident on the outside and doesn't feel it on the inside.

The Real Reason You Feel Self-Conscious

You walk into the meeting. The room is full. The next three minutes turn into a slow-motion nightmare where you can't access your own intelligence or charm. You've called this insecurity and tried to fix it with more confidence. The fix has never quite worked. In this episode, Dr. Aziz explains why self-consciousness isn't actually an insecurity problem. It's a monitoring problem. You're tracking ten variables about yourself at the same time (eye contact, voice tone, blushing, posture, rambling, on and on), and the monitoring is what's eating your capacity. He shares a story about a client who was considering medical interventions to stop blushing because he was convinced it was wrecking his career, and the realization that finally let him see what was actually running. This episode covers: Why self-consciousness isn't an insecurity problem (it's a monitoring problem) The 10-variable list exercise that makes the mechanism visible Why the smoke alarm in your kitchen is the right metaphor for your shaky voice The training move that shifts the pattern (and why talking yourself out of it doesn't) Discover your approval type. Why People Don't Take You Seriously

You spoke up. You were clear. You told them what you needed and by when. They said yes. Then the deadline came and the thing wasn't there. If you've been getting more direct and watching it still not land, there's a specific reason. Directness is one ingredient. There's a second ingredient almost no one teaches you. In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through what that missing ingredient is and why it's so uncomfortable for nice people to use. He breaks down the two failure modes most people run (the Avoider says nothing, the Diplomat says it so softly it sounds like their problem), shows what to actually say when someone misses an agreement, and unpacks the concept of the aura of authority that determines how you're treated regardless of your title. This episode covers: The missing ingredient in being direct that almost no one teaches you The two failure modes nice people run when someone doesn't follow through The moment of silence after you've named the impact (and why it does most of the work) Why authority comes from how you carry yourself, not your title or years of experience Discover your approval type. Why Boundaries Feel So Hard

You know the techniques. You've read the books. You can recite the scripts. In the moment, none of it shows up. The standard boundaries advice has been missing the question that fires underneath every boundary moment: am I allowed to ask for this? In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through why most boundaries advice fails high-functioning people who already know the techniques. He demystifies what boundaries actually are (just preferences), uses a shoes-off-in-the-house example to make the concept disarmingly concrete, and breaks down the four levels of boundaries that almost no one teaches together. This episode covers: The unconscious question (am I allowed to ask for this?) that keeps boundary techniques from working The four levels: knowing your preference, communicating it, holding your ground, and the if-then consequences most people never get to How the Diplomat pattern softens boundary requests into invisibility (with an example you'll recognize instantly) A recent client story: two boundaries in one week, and what the other people did that floored him Discover your approval type. Why Facing Your Fears Doesn't Work

You did the bold thing. You went through with it. It even went well. So why isn't the doubt gone? Why does the next meeting, the next date, the next big moment still produce the same anxiety? In this episode, Dr. Aziz unpacks why get out of your comfort zone and face your fears is incomplete advice that's been failing high-functioning people for years. The exposures aren't the problem. What's missing is what's supposed to happen during the exposures, and most people are running so hard at the surface task they never get to it. He shares a story about a Toastmasters client who did fifteen polished speeches without ever updating her actual fear, and a moment from his own training where he taught a group of college students about test anxiety by being the most visibly anxious person in the room. This episode covers: Why exposure-alone keeps high-functioning professionals stuck in endurance mode for decades The thing your nervous system actually needs to learn from each exposure (and what most people accidentally prevent) The hyper-prepared, polished version of you that's been blocking the real update The toggle from endurance mode to enjoyment mode, and what changes when you flip it Discover your approval type. “Be Yourself” Is Terrible Advice

Right before a date, an interview, or a family gathering, someone tells you to just be yourself. Has that ever actually helped? For most of the people Dr. Aziz works with, it's done the opposite. In this episode, Dr. Aziz explains why be yourself and be authentic fail as guidance, even though they're pointing at something real. The map they hand you is no map at all, so most people end up constructing an idealized fantasy version of themselves to perform. That's a different kind of cage. He walks through a much more useful framework: identify what you value and live it today, not someday. This episode covers: Why just be yourself is well-meaning but useless advice The fantasy-self trap: how the absence of a real map produces a different kind of cage How to actually find your values, even if you draw a blank when someone asks you The end-of-day test that tells you whether you were more yourself today than yesterday Discover your approval type. You're Allowed To Push Back

"In those situations, it's not being defensive. It's defending myself. And those are two very different things. And one is actually extremely necessary and healthy." Someone says something to you that's out of line. You say nothing. Not because you don't have a response, but because the line I don't want to be defensive has functioned as a gag order for the last twenty years. In this episode, Dr. Aziz unpacks the cultural confusion that's been keeping a lot of high-functioning people silent in situations where they should be speaking. He distinguishes between being defensive (closed off to feedback, refusing accountability) and defending yourself (asserting your reality, your perspective, your no). Personal growth culture has collapsed the two, and the cost is enormous. He also shares a consulting-group story he hadn't told before: four therapists spending five to seven minutes each interrogating his career decision to move into coaching. The kind of conversation that, when you stay silent in it, you end up carrying in your head for three weeks. Discover your approval type. Why Saying No Feels So Bad

Someone asks you for something. The word no forms in your head. What comes out of your mouth is yes. In this episode, Dr. Aziz breaks down why just say no more never quite works. There's a specific pattern running underneath the guilt and the override, and the standard get better boundaries advice doesn't reach the layer where it lives. He also names the pattern he himself runs when he takes his own quiz: the Fixer. Why You Feel You Have To Earn People's Approval

There's a pressure that follows you into every social situation. A running commentary that says whatever you're doing is wrong. You walk into the meeting, the party, the date, and the inner observer is already activated. In this episode, Dr. Aziz names the specific lie underneath all of it. I have to be something to get something. And he makes the case that the math is backwards. The version of you that's pressuring yourself to be impressive is actually less attractive than the version of you who isn't. You'll learn: What actually makes someone magnetic in a conversation, and why it isn't polish The dancing breakthrough that taught Dr. Aziz what real freedom looks like The wild-snow-leopard versus zoo-leopard distinction that captures the entire problem The specific 2% experiment you can run in your next conversation to test the whole thing for yourself Discover your approval type. You’re Successful and Exhausted

You're successful by every external measure. Some part of you is tracking, in real time, how you're coming across. Confident enough. Smart enough. Polished enough. The hyper-observation never quite turns off. Not in the meeting, not at the dinner, not in the relationship you've been in for two years. In this episode, Dr. Aziz breaks down the Performer, one of the four ways your nervous system tries to keep you safe when disapproval is on the table. It's the most rewarded of the four patterns. It's also the most exhausting. He walks through why succeeding doesn't quiet the voice, why the achievement route fails, and includes one of the most vulnerable stories he's shared on the show: a panic attack on a picnic with a woman who liked him. This episode covers: What the Performer pattern actually does in your nervous system Why getting more impressive doesn't fix it, and why it makes it worse The intimacy cost: why the people closest to you don't quite know you The Broadway-show-from-hell metaphor for what life feels like as a Performer What actually changes the pattern, and why willpower can't reach it Discover your approval type. You Look Confident But You Don’t Feel It

You're more accomplished than you used to be. The doubt didn't go away. Three a.m. replays. Did I say the right thing. Why did I do that. Should have handled that differently. The voice doesn't care how much you've achieved. In this episode, Dr. Aziz unpacks why self-doubt persists no matter how successful you become. The physicians twenty years in still secretly questioning themselves at the end of every workday. The CEOs and founders who look polished and confident on the outside but live with a constant headwind of doubt on the inside. This episode covers: Why more achievement doesn't fix self-doubt (and the strategy almost everyone tries first) Why doubt is the default, the path of least resistance for the human nervous system The strange way doubt gives you certainty and comfort A 20-year-old client convinced he'd already missed his chance, and what that conversation reveals The reframe that breaks doubt's hold: the opposite of doubt isn't certainty Discover your approval type. The Real Reason You Don't Speak Up

There's a conversation you know you need to have. You've thought about it. You've maybe rehearsed it. The moment comes, and you don't say anything. The moment passes. It feels, for a second, like you dodged something dangerous. In this episode, Dr. Aziz breaks down the Avoider, one of the four ways your nervous system tries to keep you safe when disapproval is on the table. He shares ten years of his own life lived in this pattern, including the moment he realized he was experiencing every relationship as a trap he needed to escape from. This episode covers: Why this isn't a willpower problem (and why beating yourself up about it makes it worse) The two layers of the Avoider: the front-end avoidance most people call shyness, and the deeper avoidance that quietly destroys relationships Lonely amongst people: the most painful cost of avoiding what needs to be said What actually changes the pattern, and why the standard just push through advice keeps failing Discover your approval type. Why You Still Care What People Think

Your boss doesn't quite make eye contact in a meeting. You text someone and they don't get back to you. And it sticks. The whole rest of the day, some part of you can't put it down. In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through the wheel of life. A metaphor he uses with clients to show why your nervous system is still looking up to people the way you did at five years old, even when you're forty. Even when those people are old. Even when they're not actually that powerful anymore. Even when, sometimes, you don't even like them. This episode covers: Why telling yourself to just be more confident never quite works The wheel of life metaphor: how the developmental wiring that was appropriate at five gets stuck running at thirty-five The equation underneath all of it (approval equals self-worth) and why it has to be broken Two pathways for reclaiming the authority you've been giving away Discover your approval type. Why You Feel Like You’re Being Judged All The Time

You walk into a room and your guard goes up. Not because anyone said anything. Not because anyone is even looking at you yet. Just the room. If this is you, you've probably called it social anxiety, or being too sensitive, or I just care too much what people think. It's none of those things on their own. In this episode, Dr. Aziz unpacks what's actually been installed in you over the last twenty years, and why uninstalling the apps doesn't fix it. There's a specific equation running underneath the chronic feeling of being evaluated, and once you can see it, the just stop caring what people think advice stops looking like an answer. He shares two stories that show how the wiring gets installed and how it propagates. One from when he was eleven, sitting in a Supercuts, flipping through a magazine he'd never normally read. One from last week, with his ten and twelve-year-old kids and a basketball trick shot. The two stories together show why this isn't a personality flaw and isn't fixed by uninstalling the apps. It's the cultural arrangement we've all been swimming in, and the equation it installed inside you decades ago. Discover your approval type. Why You Can't Say What You Actually Mean

You knew exactly what you wanted to say. Then something softer came out instead. It happens at work, with your partner, with your parents. Every time, you walk away wondering why you keep doing this. In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through what's actually happening in that gap between what you meant to say and what came out. He shares a real client case where the version of his client sitting in the office and the version of him in the meeting were two completely different people. The gap between those two voices is the entire teaching. This episode covers: Why telling yourself to stop being a people-pleaser never quite works The specific pattern running below your conscious mind when you soften, hedge, or hold back The three costs you're probably not adding up, including one showing up in your body What actually changes the pattern, and what doesn't Discover your approval type. Why You Need People To Like You (Even When You Don’t Like Them)

You can explain your work to a friend over dinner. In front of your boss, the same words fall apart. Most people call this social anxiety, or I just lack confidence in those situations. It isn't either of those things. In this episode, Dr. Aziz unpacks what's actually firing when you freeze around certain people. The cyberball research from UCLA. The 4 Ways You Override Yourself Around People

You knew exactly what you wanted to say. Then something softer came out instead. There's a specific reason this keeps happening, and it isn't a confidence problem. In this episode, Dr. Aziz breaks down the four ways people override themselves under social pressure: the Diplomat, the Avoider, the Fixer, and the Performer. They just don't explain why it keeps happening for decades, even after reading the books and trying the techniques. The Invisible Pressure to Not Be Yourself

There's an invisible pressure pushing you to not be yourself. It doesn't show up as a dramatic moment. It's death by a thousand paper cuts. The meeting where you stayed quiet. The conversation where you chose what they'd want to hear. The thing you didn't say. The version of you that doesn't quite get to come out. In this first episode of Authentic Confidence, Dr. Aziz introduces the show, the framework, and what's actually running underneath the chronic feeling of not being fully yourself. You'll discover the false choice most people don't realize they're caught inside, the difference between the social anxiety cage and the "nice cage" Dr. Aziz lived in for years after escaping the first one, why authentic confidence isn't a personality trait but a practice, and a preview of the four approval patterns coming next week. Goodbye Shrink for the Shy Guy, Hello Authentic Confidence

After 12 years and over 600 episodes, Shrink for the Shy Guy is reaching its final installment. But this isn’t an ending—it is a massive evolution. Starting next Wednesday, this same podcast feed will transform into a brand-new show: Authentic Confidence with Dr. Aziz. In this special transition episode, Dr. Aziz reflects on the journey that began in 2013. What started as a mission to help people overcome classic social anxiety has expanded into a much larger movement. He explores how shyness, people-pleasing, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism are all "branches of the same tree," rooted in a single core issue: The Approval Trap.

Do You Feel Like You Belong?

Do you ever feel like you’ve done years of "work" on yourself, only to wake up and find you're facing the exact same fear, hesitation, or self-doubt you thought you’d finally conquered? In this episode, Dr. Aziz digs into the frustrating reality of why our core struggles seem to have a "boomerang" effect. We often spend our energy pruning the leaves of our problems—fixing surface-level habits or social techniques—while leaving the deep root system of our identity completely untouched. This hidden psychological architecture is often designed to keep you safe by keeping you small, effectively pulling you back into familiar patterns the moment you try to expand. If you feel like you’re running in circles, it’s not because you’re failing; it’s because your nervous system is still prioritizing protection over power. Dr. Aziz reveals how to identify the hidden "safety payoff" of your recurring struggle and how to fundamentally rewrite the inner rules that keep these patterns alive. Learn how to stop treating the symptoms and start transforming the source so you can finally move forward without being pulled back.

The Voice That Says It Won't Work

What if the real reason you hold back, soften what you say, or carefully rehearse how you come across isn’t actually about confidence at all? What if, underneath it all, there’s a deeper fear - that if people saw the real you, they simply wouldn’t like you? In this episode, Dr. Aziz explores the hidden fear that quietly drives people-pleasing, overthinking, and the constant effort to present yourself the “right way.” Many people live with an unspoken belief that something about them is fundamentally not enough - like they’ve been dealt a bad hand in life. From that place, it becomes natural to compensate: improving, performing, polishing a persona, and trying to become someone who will finally be accepted. But as Dr. Aziz explains, this strategy creates a painful paradox. When approval comes, it often brings anxiety and imposter syndrome. When it doesn’t, it seems to confirm the belief that something is wrong with you. Either way, the deeper desire we all have - to feel truly seen, known, and connected - remains unfulfilled. Drawing from years of coaching and insights from his Not Nice Live workshop, Dr. Aziz reveals how this pattern forms and why it keeps people stuck in masks and performances instead of authentic connection. He shows that the real path to belonging isn’t through perfecting yourself, but through taking the courageous risk to be more real. You’ll discover why trying to be who you think others want can never create the belonging you crave and how genuine confidence begins to grow when you allow yourself to be seen as the imperfect, evolving human you truly are. Tune in to learn how small, everyday moments of authenticity - sharing a preference, setting a boundary, speaking honestly - can begin to dismantle the fear of rejection and open the door to deeper confidence, freedom, and real connection.
