    Carly Pearce

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden sits down with Carly Pearce. Born in Taylor Mill, Kentucky, Carly Pearce left high school at 16 to take a performing job at Dollywood, then moved to Nashville at 19 to chase a solo career full-time — working odd jobs and driving her own van between shows before her big break finally came. Her 2017 debut single, "Every Little Thing," launched a run that's since brought her a Grammy, three CMA Awards, and four ACM Awards, including CMA Female Vocalist of the Year in 2021. That same year, Dolly Parton personally invited her to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry, one of the highest honors in country music. Pearce's most acclaimed work, 2021's 29: Written in Stone, turned the pain of her divorce into a Grammy-winning album, and she's continued that streak of raw, unflinching songwriting on 2024's Hummingbird and this year’s Honest Woman. While talking with Joel, Carly opens up about the years of grinding it out before anyone was paying attention, learning to trust her own instincts instead of everyone else's opinions, and why she's finally made peace with even the hardest chapters of her story. Daryl Palumbo

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden sits down with Daryl Palumbo. Formed in 1993 by a then-teenage Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck, Glassjaw became one of post-hardcore's most influential acts, known as much for their unpredictable, genre-defying sound as for the loyal following of musicians who cite them as an inspiration. In 2003, Palumbo launched a second project, Head Automatica, pairing his love of Britpop and hip-hop with producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura for a sound entirely different from Glassjaw's — their debut, Decadence, charted on the Billboard 200 the following year. More than three decades after he and Beck first bonded over matching Anthrax and Bad Brains T-shirts at summer camp, Palumbo is still fronting both bands, with new Head Automatica material in the works. In conversation with Joel, Daryl opens up about the freedom he's always chased in his music, how fatherhood became the most grounding and fulfilling thing he's ever experienced, and the years of self-doubt and restlessness that shaped both his art and his sense of self along the way. 6LACK

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden sits down with 6LACK. Born in Baltimore and raised in Atlanta, 6LACK grew up around music from the start — his father owned a recording studio, and he was already stepping into the booth by age four. After cutting his teeth as a teenage battle rapper, he broke through in 2016 with his debut album Free 6lack, which spawned the Grammy-nominated single "PRBLMS" and established the introspective, emotionally direct sound he's known for. His follow-up, East Atlanta Love Letter, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and his most recent album, Since I Have a Lover, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album. Along the way, he's collaborated with everyone from J. Cole and Lil Baby to Elton John and Gorillaz. A decade into his career, 6LACK joins Joel in the Artist Friendly studio to open up about how he has spent the last few years simplifying his life — cutting out excess, opportunists, and old habits — confronting the ego he didn't know he had, and learning what it actually means to build a life around what matters most. Dan + Shay

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden sits down with Dan + Shay. Dan + Shay met at a house party in Nashville in December 2012 and started writing songs together not long after — an unlikely pairing, given Dan came from an emo band background and Shay had been a solo artist on T-Pain's label. Since then, the duo has become one of the most decorated acts in country music history: three consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for "Tequila," "Speechless," and "10,000 Hours" with Justin Bieber, alongside dozens of ACM, CMA, and Billboard Music Award wins. Their crossover success has made them global streaming juggernauts, and in 2024 they became the first-ever coaching duo in the history of NBC's The Voice. Sitting down with Joel, Dan + Shay open up about the highs of over a decade together — the awards, the arenas, the recognition — but also the harder work underneath it: learning to communicate honestly, untangling their self-worth from their results, and figuring out what it actually means to build a lasting partnership, both as a band and as best friends. Good Charlotte recently returned with Motel Du Cap, their first album in seven years, and the pop-punk elder statesmen are ringing it in with their longtime friend M. Shadows on Artist Friendly. The Madden brothers and Avenged Sevenfold vocalist go back, from meeting on Warped Tour in the 2000s to playing “Bat Country” together on TRL. In an intimate conversation between like-minded collaborators, the Good Charlotte bandmates sit down with Shadows to celebrate their recent Revolver cover and share untold stories from 25 years in rock. Eyedress (Rerun)

On this week's rerun episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Eyedress. Born in Manila, Eyedress came to the US at five years old, moving through Arizona and California — discovering punk and skate culture along the way — before his family returned to the Philippines when he was 15. After years of self-releasing lo-fi bedroom recordings and slowly building an online following, he broke through with 2020's Let's Skip to the Wedding, which spawned global hits "Jealous" and "Romantic Lover" and eventually led to a deal with RCA. Since then, he's collaborated with artists like Mac DeMarco, King Krule, and Harmony Korine, carving out a sound that's equal parts woozy, nostalgic, and entirely his own. Eyedress and Joel dig into his journey from a rough childhood to building a life and family on his own terms, the anxiety that still follows him even after years of success, and why he believes the biggest leap of faith he ever took was also the best decision he ever made. Andrew McMahon

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Andrew McMahon. Back in the early 2000s, McMahon catapulted to pop-punk fame as the vocalist and pianist in Something Corporate. While the band took a break, he started writing solo songs that formed the nucleus of Jack’s Mannequin, whose first album, 2005’s Everything in Transit, covered the collapse of a long-term relationship while unknowingly foreshadowing his cancer diagnosis. These days, he’s fronting Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, though he’s gone on a reunion tour and released new music with Something Corporate in the past couple of years. Sitting across from Joel, he enters a reflective space, opening up about finding his place in music, channeling grief into songwriting, and how decades of reinvention have shaped his career. ------- Listen to their Artist Friendly conversation on Spotify. ------- Follow Artist Friendly! Mikaela Hoover

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Mikaela Hoover. Hoover’s best known for her long partnership with James Gunn, who created a web short for her called Sparky & Mikaela before casting her in a series of superhero films, including 2010’s Super, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and last year’s Superman. Following those roles, she’s stepped into the world of anime by playing Chopper in Netflix’s adaptation of One Piece, which Madden calls the “Japanese Star Wars.” Stopping by the Artist Friendly studio, the actor discusses how the character helped heal her inner child, the importance of trusting instincts as an artist, and the freedom that comes from embracing who you are. “It was almost cosmic,” Hoover tells him. “I was like, ‘I love this role, and this role is me,’ and I knew nothing about it.” ------- Listen to their Artist Friendly conversation on Spotify. ------- Follow Artist Friendly! On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Travie McCoy. This summer heralded Gym Class Heroes’ “Universal Language,” doubling as their first music since 2011’s The Papercut Chronicles II and a taste of their upcoming album. Quickly, news of their Back to Basics tour with Lupe Fiasco followed, which kicks off in September. Before heading out on the road, McCoy stopped by the Artist Friendly studio to talk about his journey through addiction and recovery, the legacy of Gym Class Heroes, and how creativity helped him find purpose both on and off the stage. ------- Listen to their Artist Friendly conversation on Spotify. ------- Follow Artist Friendly! Chase Rice

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Chase Rice. After nonstop touring, the country star recently came off the road and limited his schedule to just a handful of shows that would “not look like anything like what I’ve done the last 13 years of my life.” Catching up with Madden in the Artist Friendly studio, Rice discusses finding fulfillment beyond commercial success, how stepping away from touring helped him rediscover his love of making music, and the personal growth that’s reshaped his faith, relationships, and outlook on life. “Why do I want my new music to be heard so bad?” he asks. “I’ve been racking my brain about that since we’ve been sitting here. Because if you know me for ‘Eyes on You,’ ‘Drinkin’ Beer. Talkin’ God.,’ ‘Ready Set Roll…,’ then you don’t know me at all. If you listen to some of this new stuff, then you’re gonna get to finally know who I am.” ------- Listen to their Artist Friendly conversation on Spotify. ------- Follow Artist Friendly! On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Hongjoong of ATEEZ. Back in 2021, Hongjoong — one of the various members in ATEEZ — transformed Linkin Park’s “Numb” into a K-pop hit, even getting a shoutout from Mike Shinoda. Since then, the group have only continued to explode, growing their international fanbase, selling out tours, and landing on the Billboard 200 with the release of their 13th EP, Golden Hour: Part 4. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach (Rerun)

On this week's rerun episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach. More than 20 years since their inception, Papa Roach continue to thrive. Their 2000 album Infest seems to grow bigger every year as new people discover songs like “Last Resort” and “Blood Brothers.” They also remain on the road in support of their 2022 LP Ego Trip, including wrapping the second leg of their own Rockzilla tour and supporting Shinedown across the U.S. last year. “I’m not good when shit’s just calm, quiet, still — I need some chaos,” Shaddix told Alternative Press in 2022. “I’ve got too much energy inside, and if I just sit stagnant, it drives me fucking mad. I need that release — that’s why I go run all the time. That’s why I go to the gym, because I’m an energetic being. So performing is such a healthy experience for me. Bebe Rexha

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Bebe Rexha. Before she signed to Warner in 2013, Rexha was in a short-lived electropop band with Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz called Black Cards, which led to touring with Travie McCoy, multiple solo albums, and a summer on Warped Tour in 2015. Now she’s freshly independent, forming a partnership with indie label and distributor EMPIRE. In a conversation with Joel, they get into pushing yourself forward, turning pain into songwriting, and her new visual album, Dirty Blonde, out Friday (June 12). “I feel like I can always do better — this is the problem with me — but there are some records on there that I’m absolutely so proud of…” she says. “I don’t like being stuck in a box. I grew up on so many different sounds… If I wanna do a classical album next, I’m gonna do that.” ------- Listen to their Artist Friendly conversation on Spotify. ------- Follow Artist Friendly! On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World. Earlier this year, Jimmy Eat World unveiled the 25th anniversary tour of Bleed American — a landmark album that wrapped their sophisticated, heartfelt storytelling in giant hooks and polished production. Before their headlining run kicks off next week, the frontman stopped by the Artist Friendly studio to discuss the right way to finish a song, growing up in the ’90s, and their ability to fit anywhere. “I don’t know how, but we’ve definitely done tours where it’s like nine ska bands and us or eight hardcore bands and us,” Adkins tells Madden. “Somehow we don’t get chased out of the room.” ------- Listen to their Artist Friendly conversation on Spotify. ------- Follow Artist Friendly! Jacob Charlton of Thornhill

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jacob Charlton of Thornhill. After opening for Sleep Token on their massive North American arena tour last year, Thornhill quickly captured the attention of the heavy scene. Now, however, they’re in the midst of their own headliner, dubbed the Mercia Tour, presented by our friends at Revolver. While on the run, the frontman stopped by the Artist Friendly studio to dig into the grind of touring, the intentionality behind heavy music today, the evolution of Thornhill across their records, 2022’s Heroine and 2025’s Bodies, and what it takes to keep a band together for the long haul. ------- Listen to their Artist Friendly conversation on Spotify. ------- Follow Artist Friendly! Maisie Peters

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Maisie Peters. The British singer-songwriter’s last album, 2023’s The Good Witch, was a “twisted” take on a breakup album, exploring the “fun and intrigue in being so hurt because it means you cared so much.” Her latest record, Florescence, takes a softer, brighter turn that’s grounded in hope as Peters embraces adulthood. Sitting down with Madden, she discusses the Blue Note residency that turned her radio hits into intimate arrangements, the panic attack that cracked her open, and the difference between loss and abandonment. Linda Perry

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Linda Perry. Perry quickly made her mark as the primary songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist for 4 Non Blondes, where she penned the international hit “What’s Up?” (which Thursday covered earlier this year). That album, 1992’s Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, spent more than a year on the Billboard 200 following its release, going platinum and racking up millions of streams. Beyond that, Perry has become a major presence behind the scenes, producing Surfbort’s Keep On Truckin’ in 2021 and working with a slew of pop stars — including Gwen Stefani, Miley Cyrus, and Ariana Grande. Stopping by the Artist Friendly studio, she joins Madden for a wide-ranging conversation about legacy, creativity, and Let It Die Here — her first solo album in 25 years. ------- Listen to their Artist Friendly conversation on Spotify. ------- Follow Artist Friendly!
