    Let's meet our LA city council candidates; first up Jose Ugarte

    The LA City Council seat for District 9 is up for grabs. District 9 happens to encompass the U-S-C campus, along with Historic South Central, and parts of South Park in Downtown LA. Jose Ugarte and Estuardo Mazariegos are running for the seat. In a two-part series, we’ll be interviewing both candidates to get a sense of how each plans to work with U-S-C and the South Central community. Today we sat down with Jose Ugarte right here in Studio B. Ugarte is a long-time South Central resident, as I mentioned, and LA city government council aide. He began his political career organizing for the LA County Federation of Labor, and went on to work for President Obama’s Nevada campaign. He recently ended his role as Curren Price’s Deputy Chief of Staff. Ugarte helped establish LAPD’s Community Safety Partnership Program, encouraging police-community collaboration in South Park. He’s also worked on development projects such as the Coliseum's renovation and the new Lucas Narrative Museum of Art. Maya Bashawaty has the story.
