After being forced into the waters off Virginia, Royal Governor Dunmore orders one final raid up the Potomac River which fights a skirmish on July 23, 1776. By some accounts, the raid was intended to reach Mount Vernon and possibly kidnap Martha Washington. It never got that close, but it did manage to pick up Harry Washington, an escaped slave from Mount Vernon who was ready to join the loyalist cause and earn his freedom.
