Episode 47 of ‘All About Art’: Running an Arts Project Space with Penelope Kupfer, Director of Kupfer In this episode, I sat down with Penelope Kupfer, director of the eponymous gallery and project space in Hackney, north east London. Kupfer functions as a platform for exhibitions and residencies. Opened in 2017, they have showcased the work of nearly 80 artists from different generations and geographies with a focus on those who are currently underrepresented in the London art circuit. Listen on to hear me ask Penelope about founding the project space and how it has developed since its inception. We talk about how her practice as an artist influences her work with Kupfer and vice-versa, so how collaborating with emerging artists and curators impacts her. We also touch on the topic of Motherhood, a huge theme for Penelope, and how important it is to engage in conversations around it. Kupfer also hosted the 2nd anniversary celebration for the All About Art Podcast, which was filled with opportunities such as art-world speed networking and other fun games such as Jenga, reimagined for knowledge exchange. Ki Culture is an international non-profit working to unite culture and sustainability. They use “culture” as an all-inclusive term - from visual arts to heritage to performing arts, and that sustainability is used in a wide sense of the word- encompassing all three pillars, environmental, social, and economic. The company aims to redesign systems and rethink how and what we do to find solutions that will be better for the people, better for the culture, and better for the planet. Artist Interview with Stacey Gillian Abe (in collaboration with Unit London)
EPISODE 44 of ‘All About Art’: Artist Interview with Stacey Gillian Abe (in collaboration with Unit London) In this episode, I had the joy of speaking to artist Stacey Gillian Abe. Stacey was born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1990. She received her BA in Art and Industrial Design from Kyambogo University in 2014. She has gone on to present her work internationally at museums, galleries, fairs and biennales. The episode coincides with her solo exhibition at Unit London on Hanover Square in London. Within this episode, Stacey tells me about the works in the show and what inspires her practice. We chat about how she brings in autobiographical experiences and investigations of themes like identity, gender, and the Black Body. We also talk about the medium she uses, as she primarily uses paint but has encompassed hand embroidery in this series, which is a new element in her work. The works evoke a strong relationship to the viewer but they also exert their independence from the viewer through the poses and gazes of each subject. The exhibition is on until January 27th 2023, so if you’re in London, I definitely recommend you go see the show! Quantum Physics & Art with Libby Heaney
EPISODE 41 of ‘All About Art’: Quantum Physics & Art with Libby Heaney In this episode, I speak to the fabulous London-based contemporary artist Libby Heaney. Libby studied Physics at Imperial College London and has a PhD in Quantum Information Science from the University of Leeds. She spent 5 years working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford and the National University of Singapore, leading her own research and publishing 20 papers on topics like quantum entanglement and quantum biology. In 2008, she won HSBC and the Institute of Physics Very Early Career Woman physicist of the year and a prestigious EPSRC postdoctoral fellowship. However, as you will hear later on in the episode, Libby retrained as an artist at Central St. Martins, graduating in 2015, and now works at the intersection of advanced technologies, science and art. She is widely recognized as a pioneer of quantum computing and art, receiving substantial international press for her artwork Ent-, which is a work we will discuss in depth later on. This episode was actually recorded a few months ago, which is quite atypical for All About Art, but there was a reason for it. At the time, Flora was pregnant with her baby boy, who has since then not only been born, but has already attended a few exhibition openings and art events! EPISODE 36 of 'All About Art': Curating 'Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity' at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, with Gražina Subelytė In this episode, I speak to Gražina Subelytė, Associate Curator at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. Gražina curated the exhibition showing during the 59th Venice Biennale which is titled 'Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity'. In this episode, we talk about her background and how she came to curate at such a renowned organization. We delve into the intricacies and processes of curating an extensive exhibition, and we also touch on the challenges of putting together a show like this one. Art Censorship: Part 2
EPISODE 35 of 'All About Art': Art Censorship PART 2! In this episode, I continue the conversation from episode 15 of the All About Art podcast on the topic of art censorship. I use a particular example that involves the US, the UK, Germany and Austria. The case study I speak about is the "100 Years and Still Too Daring?" ad campaign by the Vienna Tourist Board for the Viennese Modernism retrospective with works by Austrian artist Egon Schiele. Tabish specializes in London's art scene and he believes passionately in making art accessible to everyone. He visits and writes about hundreds of exhibitions a year covering everything from the major blockbusters to the emerging art scene. He’s been a visual arts editor for Londonist since 2013, and he is also a regular contributor for FAD with a weekly “top exhibitions in London” column, as well as a column called 'What's wrong with art'. Tabish is also trustee of ArtCan, a non-profit arts organization that supports artists through profile raising activities and exhibitions. We talk about how he entered into the arts, having not studied an arts-related subject. We also talk about issues within the art world, including social media and the “who-you-know” culture. Holly has over eight years of experience editing and producing content across print and digital media, with excellent knowledge of the arts sector – from national institutions to contemporary galleries. She started off as Editorial Assistant of Art Quarterly, the magazine of the Art Fund, and has since then written for The Art Newspaper, Wallpaper* Magazine, Sotheby’s, and the Museums Journal to name but a few. She is now Managing Editor of Elephant, a leading arts and culture magazine that covers the international art world with a focus on emerging artists, designers, and photographers. EPISODE 32 of 'All About Art': Interview with Alayo Akinkugbe, founder of A Black History of Art In this episode, I had the joy of sitting down with Alayo Akinkugbe, the founder of an Instagram account that has been a game changer - Alayo founded A Black History Of Art in 2020 and she did so with the aim of providing a more diversified overview of art history when she realized that she hadn’t been taught about ONE black artist throughout her whole first year studying History of Art at Cambridge. The account has now amassed over 55 thousand followers, highlighting the overlooked Black artists, sitters, curators, and thinkers from art history to the present day. Within this episode, Alayo and I speak about her education at Cambridge and the Courtauld in London, but we also dig deep into how she feels that the account has affected her career. We also talk about her professional trajectory, and how what she has learned through her education in art history and curating, as well as her work within decolonizing the sector, has impacted what type of work she wants to do later on. We talk about her sculptural works as well as her poetry and do this within the context of her most recent solo exhibition with ARTPOWHER Contemporary at Volta Art Fair in Basel. Her practice investigates the themes of migration, displacement, and trauma of colonialism, as well as the importance of oral histories, language, and identities. Ishita has received several grants and awards, including Visiting Artist Fellowship at Lakhshmi Mitaal SAI, HARVARD UNIVERSITY (2020-21), Credit Suisse Förderpreis in Switzerland (2021), and has been invited as a guest for the upcoming annual exhibition in Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau, Switzerland (2022), among other accomplishments. Artist Interview with Lindsey Jean McLean
EPISODE 29 of 'All About Art': Artist Interview with Lindsey Jean McLean In this episode, I sat down with rising star in the world of painting, Lindsey Jean McLean. Lindsey studied at the Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Drawing School, and then at the renowned Slade School of Fine Art. Her works question the historical representation of femininity and women in painting and she does this while depicting figures that exist in a space between portraiture and imagination, a combination of these. She uses recurring motifs such as feather boas, fans and veils that represent transformative objects which often obscure the viewers or the subject’s gaze in her works. In her words, she subverts the historically patriarchal medium of oil paint to dismantle and create a new space to view femininity. We chat about her artistic practice while she gives advice on how to work as an artist full-time as well as important things to do as an artist to collaborate and further your career. Gemma Peppé, Founder and Director of Art On A Postcard
EPISODE 28 of 'All About Art': Interview with Gemma Peppé, Founder and Director of Art On A Postcard Art On A Postcard was first launched in 2014 as a one-off secret postcard auction to raise funds for the Hepatitis C Trust, however, the response and popularity allowed it to continue multiple times a year, every year, since that first auction. These auctions offer postcard-sized works by phenomenal artists such as Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry, Marina Abramoviç, Patric Hughes, Gilbert and George, and Wolfgang Tillmans, to name a few.
