E189 - AI and the Future of Warfare - Carl Heith
In Episode 189 of the AIAW Podcast, we’re joined by Carl Heath, Senior Researcher and Research Lead at RISE, to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping modern warfare and what the war in Ukraine can teach Europe about the conflicts of the future. We discuss AI-assisted battlefield intelligence, autonomous systems, information warfare, Russia’s use of influence operations and reflexive control, and how technologies developed for civilian purposes are being rapidly adapted for defence and resilience. Drawing on Carl’s experiences in Kyiv and his work across security, digital resilience, and psychological defence, we also examine how research organizations such as RISE can operate at the speed demanded by wartime innovation, what Europe can learn from Ukraine, and how military AI can advance without losing democratic control, strategic autonomy, and human accountability. Finally, we look beyond the current conflict to the growing role of AI in warfare and ask what AGI could mean for security, power, and the future of human conflict.
