Process Over Performance: Reducing the Pressure on Student Athletes with CJ Smith, LCMHA

In today’s episode, Bryce Hamilton, LSCSW, asks athlete CJ Smith, LCMHA, all about the pressures of athletics on kids. CJ talks about how parents are their kids’ first leaders, teachers, and coaches. Kids learn from parents and the way in which parents react and respond to failure is what teaches their kids how to respond. In sports, there will always be failure along with successes and kids will go further when they know how to handle the pressures and failures in a healthy way. CJ highlights the importance of focusing on the mental health of the athlete which will in turn strengthen performance. He urges parents to see their kids as more than just an athlete and helps us understand the difference between healthy challenges and harmful pressure. Subscribe with your favorite podcast player Apple PodcastsAndroidRSS Along with high pressure comes burnout. Bryce asks CJ about burnout and how it affects athletes long-term. From the outside it may look like athletes are happy, successful, and at the top of their performance, but with all of the pressures of society, the media, and lack of coping skills, athletes at all levels can reach burnout and lose their “joy for the game.” CJ suggests that parents tune in to their kids and ask how they are doing, take their answers seriously, and be supportive. Kids are more than just their athletic ability and they need to know it’s ok to fail and they are loved regardless of performance. Check out our video chat here! Unpacking and Navigating Perfectionism, Anxiety, and Trauma in Kids with Kristen Jacobsen, LCPC

On this episode of Accidental Experts, Bryce Hamilton, LSCSW, and Kristen Jacobsen, LCPC, discuss the complexities of anxiety, perfectionism, and childhood trauma. Kristen deep-dives where anxiety and perfectionism in kids start, and how they can spill into adulthood. Parenting kids with anxiety, perfectionism, OCD, or through trauma can be extremely difficult. We can make changes in our expectations as parents but it requires some “re-wiring” as well as open communication. Kristen explains that we often praise kids for accomplishing a desired outcome rather than praising the effort that goes into the task, therefore creating an environment where kids strive to please others rather than being proud of themselves. Bryce asks the question, “how do we shift to [praising] the effort” in relation to this concept. Kristen explains the importance of celebrating and praising the effort first, while also celebrating the outcome. Subscribe with your favorite podcast player Apple PodcastsAndroidRSS Bryce and Kristen also discuss how being a parent who experiences anxiety or perfectionism can impact our kids. They talk about the science and environmental factors such as our own childhood experiences that contribute to anxiety and other conditions our kids may be experiencing and how helping ourselves first can ultimately help us help our kids. Overcoming Post-Traumatic Parenting and Becoming the Parent You Want to Be with Dr. Robyn Koslowitz

On today’s episode, Dr. Robyn Koslowitz, Clinical Psychologist, introduces Bryce Hamilton, LSCSW, and our listeners to the concept of “post-traumatic parenting.” As parents, oftentimes we may feel like we aren’t doing a good job. We may yell at our kids, say something we wish we wouldn’t have, or give in when we said we wouldn’t. Robyn explains that this behavior has been learned at some point in our lives and usually that is through some type of trauma. Robyn identifies trauma as “any experience that is too big for our brain to metabolize.” Bryce relates to this with anecdotes from her own childhood that may be considered traumatic to some but maybe not to others. This is helpful when understanding our own traumas as we become parents and figure out our own parenting styles. Robyn’s work focuses on helping parents to break the cycle of traumatic parenting and become the parent they have always wanted to be. Robyn’s advice: “If we can recognize where our traumas come from, we can intentionally reprogram how we react.” Subscribe with your favorite podcast player Apple PodcastsAndroidRSS Check out our video chat here! Yep, the one with the bulldog that dominated NYC TaxiTV and USA Daytime in the 20teens. Over nine years, she hosted hundreds of guests, racked up four Emmys, launched countless adventures—and had so much fun. Then she got fired. No fun. After losing her job, she thought she’d never to go back to journalism. With no other marketable skills and no idea what to do next, she entered an epic dark night of the soul. Looking for light, her family moved to the beach in Coney Island. There, Cat got serious about her own sobriety and began bringing recovery meetings to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and men. That work inspired her to found the nonprofit Restorative Housing Organization. RHO is dedicated to training formerly incarcerated men and women to renovate undervalued NYC waterfront properties, which are then rented to Section 8 tenants. She loves it. But once a journalist, always a journalist. So when she weirdly got name-checked on Hacks last season, she took it as a sign.
Soon after, she heard her old friend, musician Steve Earle, talking openly about his sobriety on a radio show —a thing she didn’t know people were even allowed to do. And she realized she wanted to be the one talking to Steve Earle about sobriety on a show! Soberness was born in September 2024. Clergy and Teacher Abuse Awareness with Melanie Sakoda

President of the Board of Directors of Coptic Survivor, an organization fighting to end clergy abuse in churches, Melanie Sakoda joins Bryce Hamilton LSCSW to discuss sexual abuse in churches and schools. They talk about the lack of discipline abusers face, common reasons why perpetrators are not held accountable, help outline the profile of typical abusers in these settings, and what we can do about it to keep children safe. Subscribe with your favorite podcast player Apple PodcastsAndroidRSS Additionally, they discuss warning signs that a child may be targeted or is being abused, best practice for helping children in these situations, and how to handle adults who give warning signs of grooming or inappropriate behavior toward youth. They tackle the age old question, “why is more not being done?” and provide resources and direct action items to make a difference. Check out our video chat here! Melanie Sakoda and friends began a website for survivors of abuse in the Orthodox Christian churches called Pokrov, the Protection of the Mother of God, in 1999. They had spoken up about the way a local abuse case was mishandled by church officials, leaving their lives forever changed by the backlash. Realizing how important their mutual support was, they wanted to reach out to those who did not have that. The website was active until March, 2020. Melanie affiliated with SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, in 2008. She led SNAP support meetings from 2009 until recently. Melanie continues to lead independent virtual support groups and advocate for survivors, particularly Orthodox victims, and is the President of the Board of Directors of Coptic Survivor.
