The 19th Child: Breaking Family Patterns with Paul Lamar Hunter

What does fatherhood look like when your parents worked hard to keep you alive, but you still grew up feeling their absence? In this episode of the 4 Fit Fatherhood Podcast, Rod Richard sits down with Paul Lamar Hunter, author of No Love, No Charity: The Success of the 19th Child. Paul was born the 19th of 21 children. He is a father of four adult children, a grandfather, and the first of the 21 children in his family to earn a college degree. Paul shares stories that sound almost impossible: growing up in an 18-bedroom home his parents bought for one dollar, losing his father before his eighth birthday, and helping his mother run a homeless shelter while other kids attended games and school activities. He also speaks honestly about the difference between provision and presence. Paul explains why he saved PTO for field trips, coached his children's teams, helped with homework, and kept his phone open to his adult children at any hour. Rod and Paul discuss: Growing up as the 19th of 21 children The impact of a father who worked 16-hour days The blessing and cost of serving people outside the home How older siblings filled the parenting gap Becoming a present father after feeling unseen as a child Returning to college and graduating at age 42 Telling painful family truths without living in anger Therapy, faith, forgiveness, education, and generational wealth Why a mentor can help a man move beyond his past This is a conversation about honoring your parents, telling the truth about what hurt, and choosing what your children will experience differently. What If Your Child’s Behavior Isn’t the Problem? with Geoff Owen

What if the behavior you keep correcting is only the alarm, while the real fire is still burning? In this episode of the 4 Fit Fatherhood Podcast, Rod Richard sits down with Geoff Owen, founder of Biologically Aligned Parenting and author of The Parenting Assumption, for a challenging conversation about child behavior, discipline, emotional regulation, and the atmosphere fathers create at home. Geoff presents the view that defiance, withdrawal, aggression, and over-compliance can act as signals that a child feels unsafe or uncertain. He asks parents to pause before adding pressure, check the emotional state they brought into the room, listen without forcing a conversation, and give children space to reconnect. Rod and Geoff discuss: The difference between being in the room and being present What your children feel when you bring work stress home Why behavior may be a signal instead of the source of the problem The question, “Would I want to hang out with me right now?” How to respond when a teenager talks back or withdraws Geoff’s views on punishment, rewards, boundaries, apology, and repair The kind of relationship fathers can build with their adult children You may agree with Geoff, disagree with parts of his approach, or still be processing it. The question worth taking home is simple: When your child struggles, are you responding only to the behavior, or are you paying attention to what may be happening underneath it? 11 Months to Live: A Father’s Fight to Be There | Dale Atkinson

What happens to the way you see fatherhood when a doctor tells you that you may have less than a year to live? Dale Atkinson was working 14 to 16-hour days, building his career and providing for his family when life changed fast. Within weeks, his partner underwent surgery for lung cancer, his mother passed away, and Dale was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer. He was told his cancer was inoperable and incurable, with a prognosis of roughly 11½ months with treatment. Dale responded by becoming deeply involved in his own care, asking questions, researching his options, building a medical team, and refusing to become passive. But this conversation became about fatherhood. Dale talks openly about realizing that he knew what his children’s laughter sounded like through the wall because he was spending so much time working. He shares why 20 uninterrupted minutes with your kids can matter more than another hour at the office, why he schedules family time like an appointment, and how his diagnosis changed what success means to him. We also talk about: • The difference between providing for your family and being present with them • Why waiting for life to “slow down” is a trap • Giving your kids 20 minutes of completely undistracted attention • Talking honestly with young children about hard things • How Dale’s family turned cancer into “Dave” and chemotherapy into “superhero medicine” • Teaching your children to ask questions and think for themselves • Agency, self-advocacy, and standing your ground • Why Dale says his sons became his reason to fight • The beer he has promised to share with his son at 16 This conversation is a reminder every father needs: Your fatherhood is their childhood. What Will Be in the Slideshow at Your Funeral? | Richard G. Riccardi

What will be in the slideshow at your funeral? Richard G. Riccardi joins me for a conversation about fatherhood, faith, family, work, and what remains when the career eventually ends. Richard spent years building businesses and chasing professional goals. Now, as a grandfather looking back, he offers a perspective every father in the thick of raising kids and building a career needs to hear. We talk about: • Why financial provision can’t replace your presence • The years fathers can easily lose while building a career • Letting your kids fail and learn safely • Showing your children that Dad can be wrong • Making decisions without having perfect information • Why I prefer harmony over “work-life balance” • Generational wealth, saving, and family legacy • Faith and finding real community with other men • Starting small instead of waiting for the perfect time • Why fathers need to shut out the noise and trust themselves One of Richard’s questions stayed with me after we finished recording: What will be in the slideshow at your funeral? Because eventually the titles, accomplishments, and work go away. The people you loved and the life you shared with them remain. Connect with Richard G. Sobriety, Strength, and Fatherhood with Drew Sinclair

In this episode of the 4 Fit Fatherhood Podcast, Rod sits down with Drew Sinclair for a real conversation about fatherhood, faith, sobriety, fitness, and freedom. Drew shares how he retired from the Coast Guard, sold everything, moved his family into an RV, and began living a more intentional life. He opens up about becoming sober on January 1, 2025, finding his faith soon after, and how those choices changed the way he shows up as a husband and father. This episode digs into breaking generational cycles, learning how to be present with your kids, and why too many fathers drift through life without ever really asking what they want. Drew also talks about his simple fitness approach, why most men do have time to train, and how small daily choices can change your whole life. If you are a father trying to get back on track physically, mentally, or spiritually, this episode will hit home. Key takeaways Drew retired from the Coast Guard on May 17, 2024 and began full-time RV travel with his family. He went sober on January 1, 2025 after years of alcohol shaping his identity and routine. A Bible gifted by another veteran became one of the turning points in his faith journey. Drew believes many men are not short on time. They just have not made fitness a priority. His non-negotiables are scripture, training, and speaking life into his wife and kids each morning. He is focused on breaking generational cycles and giving his children a different experience than he had. Presence matters more than perfection in fatherhood. Freedom, for Drew, means living intentionally and having more control over how he shows up for his family. The Body Heals Itself | Fatherhood, Strength & Natural Healing w/ Ben Page

This episode starts where it should — not with credentials, but with character. Rod sits down with Dr. Ben Page to talk about who he is as a man and father before ever touching chiropractic, books, or business. Ben shares what it’s like raising a 20-year-old and a 2-year-old at the same time, and how perspective changes when you realize how fast the moments go. From there, the conversation moves into discipline, cold showers, early mornings, and why consistency beats intensity. Fatherhood lessons from a real conversation with James Fouché. We talk about defining a “good day,” fatherhood across countries, breaking cycles, infertility and marriage pressure, choosing presence, the “white noise” season of parenting, being a “silly daddy,” and a message to dads who feel like quitting. The Expecting Father Season: Systems, Security, and Legacy

In this 4 Fit Fatherhood episode, Rod and Mike Cooper talk about what it feels like to become a present provider before the baby even arrives. Mike returns to the show as an expecting dad and keeps it real about the excitement, the fear, and the mindset shift that hits when it goes from “someday” to “it’s happening.” He shares the exact moment he found out, plus a next-level story on how he told his mom and in-laws in a way they will never forget. They get into the “girl dad” thoughts a lot of men don’t say out loud: safety, babysitters, and the reality that you can’t control the world, you can only prepare your home. Mike also breaks down the money moves he’s making now, including cutting expenses and stacking cash value, while building business systems so he can step back and show up for his wife and daughter. Rod adds perspective from raising two daughters, including staying connected, learning your kid’s world, and parenting with intention instead of reaction. From Payments to Prosperity (For Real-Life Dads)

Rod sits down with Tony Manganiello (Tony Mags), a dad of seven and finance educator, to talk about the pressure most fathers carry but rarely say out loud: money stress. Tony shares how growing up without his dad shaped his view that finances cast a shadow over family life, then breaks down why “I can make the payments” still keeps families trapped. They dig into what Tony calls the “payment matrix,” where your income gets organized around debt payments instead of building freedom. Tony argues the goal isn’t budgeting to survive the month. The goal is cash flow that replaces your income over time. He explains how interest quietly drains families, why traditional snowball debt payoff can leave you with no wealth built during the process, and how he approaches using the same dollars to attack debt while building a growing “banking platform.” The conversation also comes back to fatherhood and legacy. Tony defines prosperity as peace of mind and real connection with your kids, then shares the daily “he time” routine that keeps him grounded. Connect with Tony: tony@tonymags.com Subscribe, share with a dad, and leave a quick review. Payments don’t prove you can afford the debt. They only prove you can keep up. Budgeting often turns your income into a payment machine. Think cash flow instead. Interest math hits harder than most people realize, especially early in loans. The goal: liberate cash flow by eliminating debt faster and keeping more of your lifetime income. Tony’s “dual-duty dollar” idea: use the same dollars to attack debt while building wealth. Prosperity means peace of mind and strong relationships, not a bigger lifestyle. “He time” first thing in the morning keeps your compass set before the day hits. Teach the next generation to question money rules and think critically about “good debt.” Time Stamps 00:00 Rod intro + 4 pillars setup 00:57 Tony’s story: dad left, money pressure, family shadow 06:27 “Transforming payments into prosperity” and the payment mindset 09:09 The “payment matrix” analogy and what “unplugging” looks like 13:30 Life insurance “platform” idea and using money while it grows 19:46 Cash flow vs budgeting and liberating debt payments 24:10 Retirement cliff and why “retire later” becomes the trap 46:34 Prosperity beyond money: relationship with his kids 51:03 One change: mindset, faith, and daily “he time” 1:01:31 How to reach Tony + wrap-up
