podnod 0.1.29: smoother playback and better sharing

2 min read

podnod 0.1.29 is out, and it brings together several recent updates to improve sharing, episode delivery, playback reliability, and notifications.

sharing

sharing from the open player now offers a choice between a plain link to the episode and a link that starts at the moment you are listening to. the share button also shows a confirmation when the link is copied, which previously appeared behind the player.

links shared with a timestamp now show the start time and where it falls in the episode when pasted elsewhere. opening one of those links on the website leaves the player at that moment, so pressing play starts right where the sender intended.

episodes

new episodes from shows whose publishers announce them now appear as soon as they are published, rather than waiting for podnod to check the feed again.

what was broken and is not

  • on the website, episodes no longer refuse to play in safari on the mac, iphone, and ipad with an error saying they could not be played. episodes saved for offline listening still play without a connection.
  • on the website, pressing play again after an episode fails now tries again and picks up where you were, rather than doing nothing until you reload the page.
  • when an episode cannot be played, podnod now reports the failure once instead of showing two separate messages with duplicate try-again prompts.
  • on the phone, signing in where you already follow shows now asks whether podnod may notify you, so new-episode alerts reach that phone as well.
  • a check for new episodes that fails once in the background no longer shows an error. podnod now only tells you when the check keeps failing, and takes the message down as soon as a check goes through.
  • when that check fails because there is no connection, the message says so instead of a bare "could not check".

what looks different

  • on the website, the iOS beta invitation has been taken off the download page for now, untill Apple completes their App Store review.

the apps update themselves, and podnod.eu/apps has the downloads.
