Mark Drury's Largest Missouri Buck Ever: The 216" Rollercoaster Hunt | 100% WILD Podcast Ep. 485 In this episode of the 100% WILD Podcast, Matt Drury and Tim Kjellesvik welcome hunting legend Mark Drury to unpack the emotional saga behind harvesting his largest Missouri whitetail to date. An unbelievable 216-inch giant. Mark details his three-year history with the monarch on his heavily managed farm, tracing its development from an off-limits 4-year-old to a world-class non-typical. He takes you inside the gut-wrenching early-season encounter on September 21st, where a string jump at 27 yards turned a lethal shot into a marginal, high onside single-lung hit. Mark recounts the painstaking recovery efforts, including reading bubble-tinged blood trails with tracking dogs and using thermal drone reconnaissance to confirm the buck was still alive and mobile. The conversation turns to the heated online debate surrounding Mark's decision to carry a Mission crossbow alongside his vertical bow on the follow-up hunt to cleanly close the chapter. Matt, Tim, and Mark confront keyboard critics directly, examining why hunter ethics and putting an animal out of misery must always supersede personal ego and equipment elitism. They also explore the rapidly changing legalities of thermal drones in states like Missouri versus Iowa and Illinois, as well as emerging airspace defense technology. The episode concludes with a must-listen "Ask the Madman" Q&A, where Mark shares tactical advice on hunting unseasonably warm October heatwaves, reading DeerCastcold-front movement transitions, and essential factors to analyze when purchasing hunting land. 00:00:00 – October Heatwave Struggles & Welcoming Mark Drury 00:01:14 – Mark Drury's Largest Missouri Buck Ever: Inside the 216" Giant 00:04:24 – Respecting the Animal: Lessons from Wounding & Recovering Game 00:06:25 – 3-Year History: Passing a 4-Year-Old Missouri Monster 00:12:43 – Summer Velvet Photos: A 250-Class Illusion 00:17:34 – The September 21st Encounter: 27-Yard Shot Setup 00:22:48 – Bow Setup & The String-Jump: Breaking Down the High-Lung Hit 00:26:47 – Broadhead Debate: Pass-Throughs vs. 2.3" Cutting Diameter 00:30:00 – Deer Reaction Physics: Head-Up vs. Head-Down on the Shot 00:35:41 – Single-Lung Survival: Reading Bubble Blood & Tracking Dogs 00:40:30 – Confirming Life: Deploying Thermal Drones to Spot the Living Buck 00:42:57 – Compounding Stress: Hospital Emergencies, Weddings & Hunting Guilt 00:45:03 – The Second Hunt: Choosing the Mission Crossbow to Finish the Job 00:51:13 – The Crossbow Controversy: Why Ethics Must Always Trump Ego 00:58:19 – Moral Dilemmas in Whitetail Recovery & Legal Frameworks 01:03:47 – The Wild West of Thermal Drones & Airspace Defense Technology 01:11:38 – Field Tape to Official Score: Realizing the 216" Mark 01:19:42 – Ask the Madman: Rut Hunting Tactics During a Record Heatwave 01:27:03 – DeerCast Cold Front Forecasts: When the Switch Flips Green 01:28:21 – Land Buying Blueprint: What to Look for Beyond Food & Cover 01:30:25 – Rack Pack Community & Spotting the Fake Member Names Join the Rack Pack Facebook Group :/ n73gskjt7bfb2ngc Get ahead of your Game with DeerCast available on iOS and Android devices App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/deerc...
