  • The Stabbin Stylist

    106: Melisha Gibson

In October 1976, the death of four-year-old Melisha Morganna Gibson shocked Cleveland, Tennessee, and drew national attention to a child welfare system that had already received warnings about the danger surrounding her. Melisha had been removed from her home as an infant following allegations of abuse and spent much of her young life in foster care. Just months after she was returned to her mother, Wanda Maddux, and stepfather, Ronald Maddux, Melisha was dead. Ronald and Wanda Maddux were later convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 99 years and one day in prison. But Melisha’s story did not end with a criminal trial. Her death forced Cleveland and Bradley County to confront difficult questions about how an abused child could have been returned to a dangerous home. The case received national coverage, including an extensive article by Calvin Trillin in The New Yorker, and became part of a larger conversation about child abuse, child protective services, and the responsibility of agencies charged with protecting vulnerable children. In Cleveland, the response was immediate. Approximately 1,000 people attended Melisha’s funeral. Local advocates pushed for greater cooperation between agencies handling child abuse cases, and the community’s child shelter was renamed the Melisha Gibson Child Shelter in her memory. Nearly fifty years later, Melisha’s name is still remembered in Cleveland. In this episode of The Stabbin Stylist, we look back at the short life of Melisha Gibson, the warning signs that came before her death, the investigation and trial that followed, and the lasting impact her case had on child protection in Tennessee and beyond.

  • Dark Korea — Korean True Crime & Mysteries

Dark Files: Rampage — Four Attacks on Ordinary People, and the Warnings Before Them

None of the people in tonight's stories were targets in any way that makes sense. They were at home, at a wake, in a playground, on the stairs. They were simply there when one man decided that everyone around him would pay. This is Dark Files, and tonight we have four rampages, spread across nearly four decades of Korean history. We begin in April 1982, in Uiryeong County, where a police officer took carbines and grenades from his own station's armoury and spent the night going through four villages. Fifty-six people died where they fell, and six more died of their wounds. The first official memorial service was not held until 2024. Then October 1991. A Saturday afternoon on Yeouido Plaza in Seoul, full of children on bicycles and roller skates. A car drove into the crowd, and two children were killed. In October 2008, a fire alarm sounded in a Gangnam boarding house, and the residents who ran for the stairs found a man with a knife waiting in the smoke. Six people died. And in April 2019, in a public housing block in Jinju, five people died on a stairwell. Their neighbours had been calling the police about the man responsible for months. Four men. Four crowds. And, again and again, a question about who should have seen it coming. In this compilation: • Episode 14: Uiryeong Massacre (Woo Bum-kon Incident) • Episode 68: Yeouido Plaza Car Rampage (여의도광장 차량질주 사건) • Episode 70: Nonhyeon-dong Gosiwon Arson-Stabbing (논현동 고시원 방화 살인 사건) • Episode 30: Jinju Apartment Arson-Stabbing (진주 아파트 방화·흉기난동 살인 사건)

Wannabe Gangster Thinks He Got Away With Murder (He Didn’t)

On August 12th, 2022, police received a concerning call from a man in an apartment complex. Inside, they discovered a woman who was well-known for her sense of style, her kindness, and her devotion to her children and grandchildren. She had even opened her home to someone she had known since he was young, offering support when he fell on hard times. Tragically, that act of generosity was repaid in the most horrific way imaginable. #interrogation #interrogationpsychology Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
