The Pascagoula River Abduction: How Two Fishermen's 1973 Close Encounter Became an Unsolved American Mystery

On this date in history, October the twelfth, we drift down to the muddy banks of the Pascagoula River in Mississippi, where in the autumn of 1973 two shipyard workers claimed an encounter so strange it would echo through UFO lore for decades. As the night of October eleventh bled into the early hours of October twelfth, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker said they were fishing off an old pier when a strange whirring, bluish light descended from the sky and hovered just above the water near them. They described an egg shaped craft, perhaps thirty feet across, that settled silently in the darkness, radiating a dim glow that cast eerie shadows across the riverbank. According to their account, a hatch opened and three bizarre figures emerged, gliding rather than walking, their bodies wrinkled and grayish, with crab like claws instead of hands, slits where ears and a nose should be, and skin that looked like elephant hide. The creatures, the men said, moved with an unsettling, mechanical grace, almost floating above the ground as they approached. Calvin Parker later said he was so overcome with terror that he fainted on the spot, while Hickson claimed he felt paralyzed, unable to move or cry out as the beings took hold of him. Hickson described being floated aboard the craft and subjected to what felt like a medical examination. He recalled a large mechanical eye, almost like a camera, hovering inches from his face and scanning his body up and down. The whole ordeal, he said, lasted only a matter of minutes before he found himself back on the riverbank, disoriented and shaking, with Parker nearby in a state of shock. What makes this case so enduring in the annals of unexplained phenomena is what happened next. Rather than keeping quiet, the two men reported the encounter to local police that same night, and investigators later placed a hidden tape recorder in the room where Hickson and Parker were left alone, hoping to catch them fabricating a story. Instead, the recording captured the two men in genuine, visible distress, their voices trembling as they tried to process what had just happened to them. Calvin Parker could be heard pleading for the ordeal to end, his words raw with fear rather than performance. Skeptics over the years have proposed everything from elaborate hoaxes to hypnagogic hallucinations brought on by stress and fatigue, while others have pointed to the consistency of the men's accounts and their physiological reactions as evidence that something truly frightened them that night, even if the ultimate explanation remains elusive. Hickson underwent hypnosis sessions in the following months, during which he maintained the same core details of the story, and polygraph tests administered to both men produced inconclusive or borderline results, neither definitively proving nor disproving their claims. The Pascagoula incident, as it came to be known, remains one of the most scrutinized alien abduction reports in American history, studied by folklorists, psychologists, and ufologists alike. It helped shape the modern template for abduction narratives, the glowing orb, the paralysis, the strange examination, the sense of lost time, themes that would recur in countless reports throughout the following decades. Calvin Parker, who largely avoided the public spotlight for years afterward, eventually wrote a book about the lasting psychological toll the encounter took on his life, describing how the fear never fully faded even decades later. So on this October morning, as the sun rises quietly over the Mississippi coastline, it is worth pausing to remember two ordinary fishermen who, by their own account, found themselves swept into something extraordinary and terrifying beside the slow moving waters of the Pascagoula River, leaving behind a mystery that continues to defy any tidy explanation.
