  • The Child Psych Podcast

You're Playing With Your Child... But Are You Connecting? with Tammy Schamuhn & Tania Johnson

"Most parents know that play is important. But what if it's not the game that matters most—it's how you show up while you're playing? In this episode of The Child Psych Podcast, child psychologists Tammy Schamuhn and Tania Johnson pull back the curtain on what therapists know about play that every parent can use at home. Drawing from the principles of child-centred play therapy, they explore how simple shifts in the way you play can strengthen attachment, build emotional safety, and help your child feel deeply seen and understood. You'll learn why following your child's lead is more powerful than directing the activity, how presence and attunement create the foundation for emotional regulation, and why children often communicate their inner world through play long before they have the words to explain it. Whether you have five minutes before bedtime or an afternoon at the park, these practical techniques will help you create moments of connection that support your child's emotional development for years to come. In this episode, you'll learn: Why your presence matters more than the activity itself. The power of child-directed play and why following your child's lead builds confidence and connection. How attunement helps children feel safe, understood, and emotionally secure. Simple play therapy techniques every parent can use at home. What reflective responding is and how it deepens connection without needing to solve or fix. How play supports emotional regulation, communication, and resilience. Easy ways to create meaningful moments of connection, even in the middle of a busy day. You don't need expensive toys, elaborate activities, or hours of free time to build a strong relationship with your child. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is slow down, enter their world, and simply be present." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Why You Keep Having the Same Fight with Your Wife/ Mark Groves

Every couple has a dance, and most men have never seen the steps written down. One of you closes the distance and gets louder. The other creates distance and shuts down. What makes it a loop rather than an argument is that each one's way of coping is precisely the thing the other cannot tolerate. Mark Groves names it, then takes it apart: Gottman's four horsemen, why men stonewall more than women do, and the single sentence that breaks a defensive pattern even though saying it feels awful. Then the harder half. Groves admits he spent years in a relationship with someone who needed exactly the skills he teaches, and asks the question underneath it: what if you need the problem to be there? What if the fixing is the point? IN THIS EPISODE The dance: the distancer, the escalator, and why the loop holds Gottman's four horsemen, and why men stonewall "I can see some truth in what you're saying," and why it tastes terrible Behind every criticism is a desired behavior "Our defense strategies live beside our greatest wounds" The kitchen, the deal breaker that kept moving, and what he said instead What happens to the fixer when the addict gets sober Why nobody should be 100 percent in with someone who is 99 Unconscious commitments, and needing a battle to fight Jon on creating problems at home to have something to bring to the room FULL EPISODE How to Co-Regulate: The Science Behind Relationship Harmony: https://frontrowdads.com/474 Want a taste of what Front Row Dads is all about? What If The Problem Is Actually The Opportunity! (Wisdom from the Erno Rubik Story)

🎙️EP 166 THE AMAZING STORY OF THE RUBIK'S CUBE How One Curious Mind Changed the World ENTREPRENEUR KIDS LEGACY SHOW Hosted by Daniel & Destiny What can a scrambled Rubik's Cube teach children about entrepreneurship, problem-solving, perseverance, curiosity, leadership, faith, and finding the next right move? A lot more than you might think. In this episode of the Entrepreneur Kids Legacy Show, Daniel and Destiny travel back in time to Budapest, Hungary, to discover the remarkable story of Ernő Rubik, the Hungarian inventor, architect, and professor who created the puzzle that would eventually become known around the world as the Rubik's Cube. But this isn't simply the story of a famous puzzle. It's the story of what happens when a curious person encounters a difficult problem and refuses to stop asking questions. 🌱 WHAT CHILDREN CAN LEARN FROM THE RUBIK'S CUBE This episode explores how curiosity can lead to invention, why great ideas often begin with a problem, and how asking better questions can lead to better solutions. Children also discover why mistakes and unexpected results can become information, why perseverance matters when something feels impossible, and how observation, practice, patience, and pattern recognition can help solve complicated problems. Most importantly, they learn that entrepreneurship isn't simply about selling something. It can begin with noticing, caring, creating, testing, learning, serving, and improving. 💡 THE ENTREPRENEUR LESSON Daniel and Destiny ask an important question: What made Ernő Rubik an entrepreneur? He noticed a problem. He cared enough to build a possible solution. He observed how people responded to his creation and protected his invention. And when the idea needed skills and opportunities beyond what he could provide himself, other people helped carry it farther. For young Legacy Leaders, the goal is not simply to ask, "What can I sell?" Begin asking: "What problem can I help solve?" 🧩 THE LEGACY LEADER MINDSET When something feels confusing, a Legacy Leader can ask, "What can I learn?" When someone notices a problem, ask, "How could I help?" When a first attempt doesn't work, ask, "What did I just discover?" And when life feels scrambled, we can pause, pray, look carefully, and consider: "What is my next wise move?" You don't have to see the entire path before taking the next faithful step. ✝️ FAITH & PURPOSE This episode also connects the story of the Rubik's Cube to faith and trusting God when we cannot see how all the pieces fit together. Romans 8:28 reminds us: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Sometimes we only see one side of the story. God sees the whole picture. A difficult season does not necessarily mean the story is finished. A confusing moment does not mean there is no way forward, and a small beginning does not mean an idea is insignificant. For young Legacy Leaders, the lesson is simple: Stay curious. Keep learning. Pray. Take the next faithful step. ⚡️LEGACY LIGHTNING ROUND⚡️ How many possible configurations can a standard 3×3×3 Rubik's Cube have? The Answer is C. 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 That's more than 43 quintillion possible configurations. Daniel and Destiny also challenge listeners to remember the Rubik's Cube's original name: The Magic Cube. 🛠️ THE NEXT MOVE CHALLENGE This week's Tactical Legacy Challenge asks young listeners to look around their own world and find one small problem at home, school, church, or in their neighborhood. Ask yourself: Who does this problem affect? How could I help? What is one small idea I could test? You don't need to build a giant company. You are practicing something much more important: Becoming someone who notices, cares, creates, and takes action. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A CONVERSATION FOR FAMILIES After listening, parents can continue the conversation by asking: What problem was Ernő Rubik trying to solve? What did he learn when his invention became scrambled? Why do you think people wanted to keep solving the cube even when it was difficult? Then take the lesson into your own family: What problem do you notice around us? What gifts do you have that could help someone else? Who could you work with whose gifts are different from yours? And what is one "next move" you can make this week? These questions turn the episode from something children simply hear into a conversation they can carry into everyday life. 🦁 WHAT IS A LEGACY LEADER? A Legacy Leader isn't someone who has everything figured out. A Legacy Leader is someone who keeps growing, asks questions, notices needs, serves others, learns from mistakes, welcomes wise help, and has the courage to make the next move. Most importantly, a Legacy Leader uses the gifts God has given them to make a difference. 🇭🇺 A LITTLE HUNGARIAN GOODBYE Today's adventure takes us to Budapest, Hungary, the home of Ernő Rubik and the birthplace of the Magic Cube. So before we go… Viszontlátásra, Legacy Leaders! Until next time, keep asking questions. Keep creating. Keep serving. Keep learning. And when something looks impossible, remember: "What is my next move?" Because Legacy Leaders don't only see problems. They see possibilities. 🦋🙏🏻 Glory to God always. God bless you. • Mom Lab: Family, relationships & everyday life

Forgotten Names, Heavy Hearts: Why Your Memory Isn't a Moral Failing | Mom Lab

In this deeply relatable episode of Mom Lab, host Vanessa Hamilton explores the intense shame and guilt that often accompany simple memory lapses in motherhood, specifically the anxiety of forgetting a parent's or teacher's name at school pickup. This narrative serves as a compassionate guide for overwhelmed moms who feel that their inability to retain minor social details is evidence of moral failure or inadequate parenting. By sharing her own experience of freezing in the pickup line and misremembering a colleague's name, Vanessa dismantles the pressure to be the 'super-mom' with a photographic memory, offering a fresh perspective on how brain fog and mental overload are natural byproducts of modern parenting rather than character flaws. The conversation delves into the psychological shift required to move from perfectionism to authenticity. Vanessa contrasts her previous corporate life, where forgetting names was a professional liability, with the chaotic reality of motherhood, describing the maternal mind as a browser with forty-seven tabs open. She argues that society’s expectation for mothers to remember every detail is an unrealistic standard that fuels isolation and inadequacy. Instead, she highlights how admitting forgetfulness can transform awkward moments into genuine connections, turning potential judgment into shared empathy and community bonding. This theme resonates with listeners seeking validation for their own experiences of mental fatigue and social anxiety in family settings. Key themes include overcoming mom guilt, managing parental burnout, and embracing imperfection in daily life. The episode provides practical emotional tools for reframing small failures as opportunities for human connection rather than reasons for self-criticism. It addresses the cultural phenomenon of comparing our behind-the-scenes chaos to curated social media highlight reels, encouraging listeners to let go of the performance of perfect motherhood. By normalizing the struggle to keep track of names, schedules, and social contracts, the show offers relief to those feeling scattered, reminding them that worth is defined by love and presence, not recall ability. Vanessa concludes with a gentle reminder that you are doing better than you think, urging moms to forgive themselves for small lapses and find strength in vulnerability.
