    Glorious Fate: Kevin Levin on the short life and complicated afterlife of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts

    On July 18, 1863, the 54th Massachusetts—one of the first Black regiments in the Union Army, and the first raised in the North—led an assault on Fort Wagner, one of the fortifications defending Charleston, South Carolina. Their attack was preceded by an eight-hour bombardment that did little damage to the fort’s walls or defenders. Moving through heavy Confederate small-arms fire, with their commander, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, at their head, the 54th made their way up the walls and into hand-to-hand combat, but were bloodily repulsed. By the end of the action, Shaw and some 250 men had been killed, wounded, or captured. With his death, Robert Gould Shaw became a hero of the abolitionist movement, eventually memorialized in bronze at the head of his regiment on Boston Common. But as my guest Kevin Levin argues in his new book, A Glorious Fate: The Life and Legacy of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, he was a much more complicated and ambiguous person than even his contemporaries claimed him to be. Kevin M. Levin is an award-winning historian and educator based in Boston. His work explores the history and memory of the Civil War, particularly the ways Americans have remembered slavery, emancipation, Black military service, and the Confederacy. His books include Searching for Black Confederates: The Civil War’s Most Persistent Myth, Remembering the Battle of the Crater: War as Murder, and now A Glorious Fate: The Life and Legacy of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. He has written about Civil War history and memory online since founding Civil War Memory in 2005 and is an honorary fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society.

    EL ÚLTIMO PELDAÑO (18/09/2026) LAS PRESENCIAS DEL APOLO. FENÓMENOS EXTRAÑOS EN EL TEATRO DE “EL ALGAR” Hay lugares donde la oscuridad tiene memoria. En el Teatro Circo "Apolo" de El Algar, cuando las puertas se cierran y el último eco del día se desvanece, todo queda envuelto en una quietud que late. Técnicos, actores y visitantes han sentido miradas invisibles que parecen seguirlos desde algunos rincones, ese murmullo que surge detrás de ellos cuando ya no hay nadie. Esta noche vamos a entrar en ese Apolo secreto, el que solo revela su verdadero rostro cuando la oscuridad se instala y el teatro, por fin, deja de fingir. Esta noche escucharemos, con dos miembros de la Junta Directiva del Teatro, Joaquín Soto, (colaborador de nuestro programa) y José Manuel Blanco, el testimonio de Mar Ruedas, que hace unos meses tuvo una inquietante experiencia en el teatro y recordaremos los relatos de otros testigos que han vivido hechos inexplicables. ECLIPSE TOTAL DE SOL: LA EXPERIENCIA El pasado 12 de agosto fue visible, desde varios puntos de España, un fenómeno astronómico de gran interés, un eclipse total de sol. En nuestro país no vivimos un fenómeno de estas características desde 1905, más de un siglo sin que la sombra de la Luna cruzara nuestra geografía. Por eso el acontecimiento tuvo un valor extraordinario. Miembros del equipo del programa nos desplazamos a la provincia de Segovia para ver el eclipse y fotografiarlo y esta noche os contaremos nuestra experiencia. RESULTADOS DE LA XXXVI GRAN NOCHE DE LOS OVNIS En la noche del 31 de julio al 1 de agosto volvimos a vigilar los cielos a la búsqueda de objetos no identificados en nuestra tradicional “Gran Noche de los OVNIs”. Por trigésimo sexta vez unimos a multitud de aficionados a la ufología en España y otros países, para llevar a cabo la mas intensa experiencia radiofónica de cada verano. En este primer programa de la temporada haremos un resumen de lo que dio de si la noche y de los avistamientos comunicados por las unidades de vigilancia.
