JL Williams: Architecture, dreams, metaphor & poetry.

In this episode of the A is for Architecture Podcast, poet and Creative Projects Manager at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, JL Williams, spoke to me about her recent collection of poetry, Strange Architectures, her fifth book of such with Shearsman Books. In the poems, Jennifer presents visions of architectures dreamed and written, taking us the audience over thresholds and into spaces of her – and perhaps our own – inner worlds. The relationships between architecture, the psyche – literally ghost or soul in Greek– and dreamworlds is deep in architecture, manifest I’d argue throughout our modes of imagining and expressing the craft of building design. For Carl Jung, architecture was not a metaphor but a means of understanding the human psyche and his dream of a multistorey house helped shape his concept of the collective unconscious. Indeed, the homes he designed gave physical form to his propositions about the relationships between conscious and unconscious life. In this roomy conversation, Jennifer reads her poems, we discuss them, think about space and buildings, their construction, inner-life, motherhood and Jung and a lot of other stuff. It’s a ride, believe. Jennifer can be found on her website here, at work here and on LinkedIn. + Music credits: Bruno Gillick Image credit: Image 1: © JL Williams #StrangeArchitectures #ArchitectureAndPoetry #ArchitectureAndPsyche #JungianArchitecture #AisForArchitecturePodcast

Benefits of Installing Frameless Shower Glass in Calgary Homes

A modern bathroom can make a significant difference in the comfort, appearance, and overall value of a home. One of the most popular ways to create a clean and elegant bathroom design is by installing a frameless shower enclosure. Unlike traditional shower doors that use bulky metal frames, frameless designs feature large panels of tempered glass with minimal hardware. For homeowners looking for a stylish and practical upgrade, frameless shower glass Calgary solutions offer an excellent combination of beauty, functionality, and durability. Creates a Modern and Spacious Look One of the biggest advantages of frameless shower glass is its ability to make a bathroom appear larger and more open. Clear glass allows natural and artificial light to travel throughout the space without creating visual barriers. This can be particularly useful in smaller Calgary bathrooms where every inch of space matters. The simple, seamless appearance also works well with a variety of interior styles. Whether your bathroom has a contemporary, minimalist, or classic design, a frameless shower enclosure can complement the existing décor without making the room feel crowded. Easy to Customize Every bathroom has a different layout, which is why customization is important when choosing a shower enclosure. Frameless glass systems can be designed to suit different shower sizes, wall configurations, and bathroom layouts. Homeowners can select different glass thicknesses, door configurations, hardware finishes, and enclosure shapes according to their preferences. A professional installer can measure the available space and recommend a configuration that provides convenient access while maintaining a clean appearance. Custom glass can also be combined with other architectural glass features throughout a home. For example, homeowners planning additional renovations may consider glass railing installation Calgary services to create a consistent modern look between their bathroom, staircase, balcony, or other areas. Improves Bathroom Appearance A frameless shower enclosure can serve as an attractive focal point in a bathroom. Its clean lines and minimal hardware create a sophisticated appearance without overwhelming other design elements. Because there is no large frame around the glass, features such as decorative tile, stone walls, shower fixtures, and modern flooring remain visible. This allows homeowners to showcase the details of their bathroom design instead of hiding them behind heavy framing. For homeowners preparing a property for sale, an updated bathroom can also contribute to a more appealing overall presentation. While the return on any renovation varies by property and market conditions, modern bathroom features can make a home feel more updated and well maintained. Easier Cleaning and Maintenance Traditional framed shower doors often have multiple tracks, corners, and metal components where soap residue, moisture, and mineral deposits can collect. Frameless designs have fewer areas where buildup can accumulate, making routine cleaning more straightforward. Regular cleaning with an appropriate glass cleaner and a soft cloth or squeegee can help keep the glass looking clear. Wiping the glass after showers can also reduce water spots and mineral buildup. However, proper maintenance is still important. Homeowners should avoid abrasive materials and harsh cleaning products that could damage hardware or surfaces. Following the manufacturer's cleaning recommendations can help preserve the appearance of the enclosure. Durable and Designed for Everyday Use Quality frameless shower enclosures are generally made from tempered safety glass. This type of glass is manufactured to provide greater resistance to everyday impacts and temperature changes than ordinary glass. When properly selected and professionally installed, it can provide reliable performance for years. The quality of the hardware and installation is also important. Hinges, handles, seals, and brackets need to be correctly selected for the glass and enclosure design. Proper measurements and installation help ensure that the door opens smoothly and the panels remain securely positioned. Better Light and Visibility A frameless shower enclosure allows more light to pass through the bathroom. This can make the room feel brighter and more comfortable, especially when the bathroom has limited natural lighting. Clear glass also provides an uninterrupted view of the bathroom's interior. Instead of dividing the shower area from the rest of the room with an opaque or heavily framed structure, frameless glass creates a visually connected space. For those who prefer additional privacy, options such as frosted, textured, or patterned glass can provide privacy while maintaining the modern appearance of a glass enclosure. Works Well with Modern Home Designs Modern Calgary homes often feature open layouts, clean architectural lines, and minimalist materials. Frameless shower glass fits naturally into this design approach. It can also coordinate with other glass installations around the property. For example, a homeowner may choose frameless shower glass for the bathroom and glass railings for a staircase. Professional glass railing installation Calgary can help create a cohesive appearance by extending the use of glass from one area of the home to another. This design consistency can make different spaces feel connected while maintaining a clean and contemporary aesthetic. Professional Installation Matters Although frameless shower glass has many benefits, professional installation is essential. Glass panels must be accurately measured, properly supported, and securely fitted. Even a small measurement error can affect door alignment, spacing, or overall functionality. Professional installers can evaluate the bathroom layout, identify potential installation challenges, and recommend suitable glass and hardware. They can also ensure that the enclosure is installed correctly for safe and comfortable everyday use. Before choosing an installer, homeowners should ask about experience, materials, installation methods, warranties, and project timelines. Comparing these details can help ensure that the finished installation meets both design and practical requirements. Conclusion Installing a frameless shower enclosure is an effective way to modernize a Calgary bathroom. From creating a more spacious appearance to simplifying cleaning and allowing more light into the room, frameless glass offers several practical and aesthetic advantages. With proper measurements, quality materials, and professional installation, frameless shower glass Calgary solutions can provide a stylish long-term addition to a home. Homeowners who are planning broader glass upgrades can also explore options such as glass railing installation Calgary to create a consistent and contemporary look throughout their property.
